An interesting one from Paul Merson.

He has been looking at the final game of the season at St James Park and came up with a surprising outcome…and an unlikely explanation as to why this will happen.

Newcastle have nothing to play for and Chelsea everything, yet he has backed 11/2 shot NUFC to win.

This is despite Chelsea being top of the recent form table with four wins and two draws, whilst Newcastle have lost their last four matches.

Yes Chelsea did only draw at home to Huddersfield on Wednesday but the visitors’ goal led a charmed life.

They have run into form maybe just too late.

Liverpool will qualify for the last Champions League spot if they get a point or better at home to Brighton, Chelsea need to win and the scousers lose.

Due to this, Paul Merson claims that Chelsea won’t be throwing everything at Sunday’s match, instead concentrating on the FA Cup final.

With the likes of Arsenal fans and many others hardly counting the FA Cup as anything of note, I find this hard to believe.

Yes, I am sure Chelsea will throw everything at the FA Cup final when it comes around but the Champions League is so vital to the likes of the West London club, whilst there is even a remote chance, they will do everything to try and get it.

Does anybody really doubt that Conte won’t pick his very best team to play Newcastle?

Liverpool’s form has actually been really poor in the league as they have ironically, been distracted by the Champions League, the final of which is in two weeks time, 13 days after Sunday’s matches.

They have won only two of their last six Premier League matches and have failed to score in three of them, including a goalless draw at home to now relegated Stoke. Throw in giving away a two goal lead at West Brom and they haven’t been great.

As for Brighton, they got a draw with Tottenham then beat Manchester United, before going down 3-1 at Man City in midweek, but they did have a bit of a go. Falling behind they then equalised, before eventually losing.

The way I see it with Chelsea, they will really go for it on Sunday and only ease off if the position looks impossible at any time, so if say Liverpool are three up at half-time, Conte would accept the reality of the situation and take it easy.

Ideal scenario for me…Liverpool to lose AND Newcastle to beat Chelsea, we have to get our kicks from somewhere, plus of course it would be nice to round off a very decent season with a win, Rafa doing a great job against the odds.

Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:

“It’s all about the FA Cup final now for Chelsea, isn’t it?

“They have to win, Liverpool have to lose, but I don’t see it happening.

“Let’s be honest, they’ve messed it up.

“I just don’t think Chelsea will be at the races.

“I think they’ll be more focused on the final.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Chelsea 1.”

Merson on Liverpool v Brighton:

“I know they’ve got the Champions League final coming up but it’s a couple of weeks away and they’ll want to finish on a high and make sure they bag that top-four spot.

“Brighton have been great – absolutely outstanding – but they’ll be on the beach now surely.

“Prediction is Liverpool 3 Brighton 0.”

Whenever I see Paul Merson, I always get the ‘If Only I Had A Brain’ song from The Wizard Of Oz in my head . .

      Or in Rafa’s case….”If Only I Had A Striker”….”Or Two”…”Or Three”……..

The Champions` League final is two weeks away – it shouldn`t have any negative
impact on Liverpool at all. They`ll want to win to keep confidence up and players will be trying to impress the boss and get a place in the match-day squad. Our boys should be busting a gut to say thank you to the fans who have stuck by them as usual. I think Chelsea`ll do us, though, and Palace will beat W Brom so we`ll finish 11th. Hope Im wrong!

If it’s so dubious just don’t post it pal

We see this many times with all punters and fans alike.
This team will do this because they’re scared of that, or have a bigger game to concentrate on…..etc…..etc.

    The reality is much different.
First of all, all Chelsea players will want to play in the FA cup final.
All Chelsea players who are picked by Conte will try their utmost against us.

We are more likely to have a go at Chelsea like we did against Tottenham.
It could make for a great game. A high scoring game, weirdly. Hopefully not just to them.

That’s just another take on it out of many.

No,actually I don’t think Conte will play his best team,injuries/suspensions before the Cup Final.Liverpool wont drop points against Brighton and he is going to leave at the end of the season and silverware looks better on his cv than a 4th place finish.
