Newcastle United are set to be in the strange position this summer, of selling the three strikers who scored the most goals this past 2017/18 season.

Whilst Ayoze Perez scored 10 goals for Newcastle in all competitions, three other players still on the club’s books, scored more.

Sharing top spot were Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Toney scored six for Wigan in the first half of the season, then moved to League One rivals Scunthorpe and scored another eight after the new year.

Also scoring 14 was Mitro, one in the league and one in the League Cup for Newcastle, then 12 in an impressive loan spell for Fulham – the Serbian could actually finish top overall if he scores in the play-off final on Saturday.

Adam Armstrong was next best, in the early part of the season scoring three for Championship club Bolton, before hitting nine for Blackburn as they won automatic promotion.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is clearly on his way this summer as Rafa Benitez will have no shortage of buyers for a player he doesn’t fancy.

However, a surprise earlier today to hear that according to The Chronicle, Rafa has also decided to have a clear out that includes selling 22 year old Ivan Toney and 21 year old Adam Armstrong.

With 22 year old defender Jamie Sterry another player who will be made available.

If Adam Armstrong does leave on a permanent deal, then it will be the end of a journey for a player who had long been held up as the best chance of  another player that could come through into the first team from the ranks.

Newcastle players with most goals so far this season, for NUFC and/or loan clubs (all competitions):

14 Ivan Toney

(6 Wigan 8 Scunthorpe)

14 Aleksandar Mitrovic

(2 Newcastle United and 12 Fulham – still got play-off final to come)

12 Adam Armstrong

(3 Bolton and 9 Blackburn)

10 Ayoze Perez

(All for Newcastle)

9 Sean Longstaff

(9 Blackpool)

6 Dwight Gayle

(All for Newcastle)

4 Joselu

(All for Newcastle)

  • Paul Patterson

Mitrovic sale is required to raise funds and he doesn’t fit Rafa’s system.
I’d keep Gayle as a second/reserve striker and get rid of Joselu. I also wouldn’t attempt to sign Slimani.
    One quality centre forward required.

    • Clarko

You don’t think we can get a better ‘second’ striker than Gayle for ~£15m?

      • Paul Patterson

Probably not. Over the course of a full season he’d score enough as a sub/second striker. He’s just not an out and out 15+ goal a season man.

      • TheNutJob

5 goals a season`s nee good Clarko old bean

        • glassjawsh-got-banned

that’s exactly why I think Armstrong deserves a fair shake. He couldn’t possibly do any worse than Gayle (6 goals in 35 games or Joselu (4 in 30), could he??

          • JonMag

same thought mate, could give him a bench spot till January nothing to lose

          • mentalman

He struggled to score in the championship, what makes you think he can score in the prem

      • Leicester Mag

Despite your patronising response to anyone who differs in view to you only fair to recognise a valid point. Gayle ill equipped for the Premier league

  • Burt Humperdink

Seems odd as at this stage we aren’t likely to get to much for them but Armstrong really could develop into a premiership quality player in 2-3 years.

    • FatParosite

We said that about Ameobi… & we’re still waiting.

      • TheNutJob

        aye, for both of them

      • Dillon Tovak

I say bring back shola, he’s got a lot to offer 😉

        • whitleylad

          Eggs-actly!

  • Weyhhadaway

    Two strikers required.
Put a sell on clause on the Armstrong sale, nice lad hope he makes it.
Toney, do the same sell on clause.
the Mitro thing is old news, sadly gone.
Sell Gayle if we get the two striker in.
    Keep Perez as attacking midfield/no.10
    We are stuck with Joselu.

    All stating the obvious really.

  • robbersdog

I don’t mind which of our strikers we sell, apart from Ayoze Perez who really rediscovered his form over the last few months.

  • TheNutJob

sell them all, sell them all, the long & the short & the tall
there`s a song in there somewhere
    😂😂😂

  • Leicester Mag

I’d start with a bit of Hos trading

    • TheNutJob

packet of Walkers cheese & onion crisps, i`ll throw in a can of coke as a sweetner

      • Leicester Mag

Frey Bentos already lining up a bid. The believe the deal is already in the can

        • TheNutJob

          😂😂

        • FatParosite

          Nay…!

    • Dillon Tovak

      Owen could buy him.

  • relaxed

All well and good selling this one and that one but are we sure that the proceeds are going to be used to strengthen the team.
I am only asking because of my deep deep distrust of the fat one

    • TheNutJob

it`ll go in his piggy bank

      • relaxed

        Yep

      • Leicester Mag

Time to increase your holding in Greggs shares

  • Antenociticus

Not sure why we’ve kept Ivan Toney this long, he’s obviously found his level in League one. I suppose teams down there couldn’t compete with his Newcastle wages.
The writing’s been on the wall for Mitro for a while: Rafa doesn’t fancy the lad. Hopefully he’ll have a good world cup and we can get a decent fee for him.
Armstrong deserves a crack in the first team squad, whenever he’s been played in his correct position he has proven to be a genuine goal scorer.

    • Dillon Tovak

Not sure why we bought him!

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Ivan Toney is better than Armstrong

    • Weyhhadaway

We make money on the loan deal, a lot less than Chelski make on the Kenedy loan plus 4-5 others over a season, but we are a small fish, small pond.

      • Antenociticus

I seriously doubt that Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe, Wigan and Barnsley have been paying all of Toney’s wages never mind a loan fee. Same goes for Arma, especially at Coventry – they haven’t got two pennys to rub together.
Fulham may be picking up the tab for Mitro though.

  • Jate Legend

    Next level click bait

  • JonMag

    Same schitt, different a££hole

  • mactoon

Toney Mitro and Armstrong aren’t going to get a chance in the first team, so let them go.

    • JonMag

1 of those is better than Hosselu & 1 could be

      • mactoon

I would get rid of him also

        • JonMag

we need a full revamp of strikers

      • Albert Stubbins

josely is going to Fray Bentos- Corn Beef Hash- yummy!!

      • 1957

I’d go as far as saying they’re all better than The Hoss

  • Dillon Tovak

    Click bait.
Obviously we’re gonna sell Mitro and Toney. Armstrong probably will never be a PL striker too although it’s a shame.

    • NUFCLX

If this is click bait why read it / comment on it.
Seems to me that every article that is posted on here is slagged off
By someone. Same as anyone who has a different view on fatman is labelled a troll. I am sure there are a few trolls on this website but who gives a s**t, ignore them. The Non Supporters seem to be the worst offenders. I have asked this question several times and never get an answer from the Non Supporters, under which successful owner did u used to attend matches.

      • JonMag

you should ease up he`s just voicing an opinion, of course you could go on and make a c nut of yourself trolling him.
a reply is not needed, you see i BLOCK c nuts

        • NUFCLX

Not quite sure what that gibberish means

      • Lhc

        Well said

        • Dillon Tovak

          In what way?

      • Jezza

That’s the whole point of clickbait. You have to read it first before you realise it’s clickbait.

        • MadMag83

99.9% of the articles on here are click bait.

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

A good question, it seems to me that those who make an idiological stand if not going to the match are what were once called Glory hunters.

That’s not what being a football fan is about, leasylt of all when it’s nufc

      • Dillon Tovak

Um the reason I read the article was because it was click bait!? Haha 🤤
If the headline just said “Newcastle probably going to sell Mitrovic, Toney and Armstrong” I wouldn’t have clicked on it.
Is that a hard thing to grasp? Quite the rant you went on there which didn’t really have anything to do with my post.

    • Martin Rooney

I know, just like Dummett he was never going to be a premier league player either. Hold on there’s loads of 20 year old premier league players isn’t there? We’ll who can i think of in the last couple of years.
Dele Alli, Alexander Arnold, Rashford, Gabriel Jesus, and of course there was a 20 year old guy who scored 10 goals after signing for the toon in a stop start year in his first year in England, other than that theres hardly anyone.
There’s hardly anyone at premier league level at 20, Arma has every chance.

  • Weyhhadaway

Our old friend of a thousand links Betafimbi Gomis is killing it over in Turkey, you heard it here first, just saying,

  • Brian Standen

Quite simply no problem with any of them going!
Sad of course for Adam Armstrong but if your not close to the team at 21 your going to struggle
Remember in MY DAY,we bought Supermac ( who turned up in a Rolls Royce) and he was 21
I know things change but if your not knocking on the door by the time your 20, it’s not going to happen here

    • NUFCLX

There is always the odd exception to that rule

      • Brian Standen

Maybe there is, but I can’t think of any up here, in last 30 years we have had some prolific scorers at junior and U21 level who simply failed at senior level ! Paul Brayson, Anthony Lormor, Adam Campbell to name but some!

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

The game has moved on, there aren’t many 21 yo strikers doing it in the top league. They tend not to he strong enough.

Malcom Macdonald and Andy Cole were exception even then.

With both Armstrong and Toney, Id like to see them get another season but out on loan in the championship, offer them both another year on their contract.

Ideally, we’d lend them to the same club and say to them, prove yourselves as a partnership that could make it at NUFC.

This next season is a big one for them both.

  • Andy Mac

As long as Joselu isn’t still here !

    • HarryHype59

The club will find it hard to shift him!

      • FatParosite

£400k’s worth of £5 million player.

  • Mrkgw

Interesting. Mitro, I’d like us to keep. Armstrong, I don’t think would cut it as a Premiership striker however, what would be lost in at least giving the lad another go. Toney, I can’t comment having not seen him play. On the flip side, definitely sell Joselu and Gayle both whom would thrive in the Championship.

    • mentalman

I’ve watched Toney play a few times and he’s looked decent but it’s in league 1

  • Popnbgd

I hope Rafa will not buy Torres, another Spaniard who is veteran ,34 years old…

    • Much rather have 34 year old Torres on the bench than Joselu :D

      • Martin Rooney

Why his goals record isn’t that good recently and as a 34 year old he would be paid 4 x that of Hoss?

        • No chance he’s getting that much at this age. I recon 100,000 a week will be tops we are willing to pay, especially to him.
Think of all the media buzz around Newcastle if we sign Torres. This will only help increase the popularity of the club.
I am fine with Torres banking 100,000 a week if he’s fit.

          • Martin Rooney

Dybala’s on £90 so I’d have to disagree

          • In Italy no 20-year-old earns 100,000 a week. In the Prem it’s different.

          • Martin Rooney

Of course as is Spain, but if you were a club owner and had the option of 100k torres or £130K dybala?
            Torres just doesn’t make sense?

          • I don’t recall us having a chance to sign a player like Dybala.
We are looking at diamonds in the rough and frozen out players.
Can’t afford to buy star players from big clubs.

  • TheNutJob

the ronnie`s Ryder is reporting that Newcastle are clearing the decks of unwanted players in anticipation of signing £20m players on 100 grand a week. you have to despair when you read articles like that & think how do they come up with that sort on nonsense after 10 years of Fatty pulling strokes.

  • Rafa now knows which players can or can’t make the cut and which are willing to give 100% in training and on the pitch. He will sell everyone else if an offer comes in.
We need to sell as many as possible and buy 3-4 quality + 2-3 squad members
The team needs real competition for every position, not Squad members.

  • Geordiegiants

I would sell everyone of them and start again.

  • MadMag83

I’d sell Mitrovic, Toney and Joselu. Armstrong either needs to go out on loan to a Championship side where he will actually play up front, or keep him here, in and around the first team. Give him games in the EFL trophy etc.

  • SAMTHECAT

i wouldnt sell Mitrovic, i would sell Joselu, in fact i would never have sanctioned that buy a waste of 5m and 5 years worth of wages and Mitro in the same number of games would have scored more. Rafa is a great manager but not infallible in the transfer market as Sels and Lazaar proved.
It seems Mitro will be sold because apart from him and Lascelles no one else is really in demand.

  • Vodkamagpie

Some might think, if rafa leaves, Newcastle gain a 20Mil striker, 9Mil defender, and a bonus of 6Mil
