Newcastle 3 Chelsea 0  – Sunday 13 May 3pm

We asked Jonathan Drape-Comyn to give us his match ratings after this afternoon’s match.

Newcastle ending the season on a real high, crushing last season’s champions 3-0 at St James Park.

Dubravka 9 – Don’t think he had a save to make in the first half.

Made two key saves in the second half. An inspirational signing.

Yedlin 7 – Supported Ritchie well.

I think he’s been our most underrated player by far this season. Offers so much going forward and certainly isn’t a bad defender.

Lascelles 7 – Both Giroud and Morata didn’t get a look in.

It’s quite amazing how Cahill is a shoe in for the England squad but Lascelles doesn’t even get a look in.

Lejeune 9 – My MOTM today.

Like Lascelles didn’t put a foot wrong defensively but was brilliant on the ball. I’ve been critical of him this season in terms of trying to play football too much at times. a great volley in the build up to the second goal and an assist for the third.

Dummett 7 A much better performance considering he’s had a dip in form the last few weeks.

Neither winger got a look in, in all honesty. Solid might not sound sexy but it’s the best way to describe him.

Diame 9 – A close run thing for MOTM.

Dominated Kante who even looked scared of Diame at times. Deserved the outstanding ovation. Our best player in 2018 and the guy who best epitomises our turn in fortune since that West Ham game.

Shelvey 8 – Brilliant today, had a big hand in the second and third goals.

It seems like every time I have a proper rant about a player he plays well in the next game!

Ritchie 8 – The same Matt Ritchie we have seen for most of the season.

Works his socks off, industrious, and a threat going forward as well. A fan favourite and I’d say Rafa’s best signing so far.

Perez 8 – Another one who was brilliant today, chipped in with two goals so you really can’t say a bad word about his performance today.

Even if he didn’t score the two goals, he was still brilliant.

Murphy 7 Out of everyone today I’m most pleased for him!

He did alright, caused Chelsea lots of problems going forward. Really pleased that he will end this season on a positive note. Needs the confidence boost.

Gayle 7 – Got his goal which is all you can ask from a centre forward.

Didn’t do much else before getting injured either!

Subs:

Joselu 7 – It was only 1-0 when Joselu came on… game changer!

Just kidding but he did ok when he was on. Another one I am pleased for that he put in a good shift on the last day.

Hayden N/A (Not on long enough)

Haidara N/A (Not on long enough)

Where the hell is Mbemba these days? Injured or unfancied?

    • nufcslf

Not in Rafa’s plans. Looked clumsy at times, but you couldn’t doubt his effort when given a chance.

      • Patience Dowswell

Even Gamez got on the bench today. Waste of money…

        • Billmag

Why complain we won 3-0 and yet you still moan.

          • nufcslf

True, but we are now into the make an rse of it Cashley season now.

          • Billmag

As they say Tomorrow is another day let’s just enjoy the moment.

          • Patience Dowswell

Not moaning. Just stating a fact. Gamez been money wasted…

          • Billmag

No he wasn’t he was for back up and when he was called on he did ok, team’s get injuries that’s fact.

        • nufcslf

Gamez is one of many player’s who is not only a waste of money, but doesn’t have a sell on value and will likely just have see his contract out. Thank shyt scouting for that.

          • TheFatController

Well, the other opinion would be that, when you need a 25 man squad and you have an injury free squad in the main, you need players mature and experienced enough to sit out most of the games but be fit and ready if called upon.

Gamez for two Years now has ticked every box of being about number 20-24 in line for the first team but doing ok when asked to play.

          • Mark Potter

Rafa’s scouting team. And since Gamez is Spanish and played for Malaga and Athletico, then we can be fairly certain Rafa had seen him play on a number of occasions. He was bought by Rafa. Course he has no sell on value, his contract is up in a week or two. And won’t be renewed, Rafa already announced that is the case with both Gamez and Haidarra.

Were you in THE VIZ? Your name is so unoriginal…

I`m the progeny of Sid the Sexist and one of the Fat Slags (probably the straight one) – if there was a straight one …

  • Mrkgw

Great result, full of effort and commitment. Just what we want to see as supporters.

Brilliant game and result! It`s hard to pick out a MoM because everyone without exception played well. I thought Lejeune, Perez, Diame, Ritchie and Shelvey were particularly outstanding. Special mention for Murphy – he took a bit of stick from a few on here after the Watford game but he`s stuck at it and shows promise. Ayoze is another who people slagged off earlier in the season but he`s hit form and scored some absolutely crucial goals since Christmas. Diame has become a beast this year – I think he must have a tattoo on his arm saying, “win ball – give to Jonjo”. Lejeune was calm and collected and can show Jamaal what he needs to add to his game to become an automatic choice for England. Ritchie was inspirational – Chelsea couldn`t pin him down. The main man for me, though, was Jonjo. Everything goes through him and his range of passing is fantastic. Funnily enough, it wasnt the Hollywood balls that caught the eye yesterday but the 5, 10, 20-yarders that constantly linked/switched play and kept Chelsea on the defensive – and his work-rate was excellent. I`m just waiting for Ghostbuster to come on and explain to me again why Chris Hughton is tactically more astute than Rafa. Should be as interesting and instructive as ever.

    • mentalman

Diame’s passing has been immense also, there could be a lot of interest in him this summer

Hope you had a celebration lunch to watch and put camembert on the neighbours chips !

      • Wor Lass

        Ready-grated emmental!

  • Wor Monga

I mostly agree with your comments here except for me they all deserved at least 9 for effort and a one for all focus to get the right result…Murphy for one played out of his skin out wide to ensure that the impressive Kenedy wasn’t missed, by turning his markers inside out, and Dubravka’s saves against Giroud and Barkley were what is needed to turn matches against the top clubs…

…this was a contest between what has been (wrongly) termed by the media and echoed on sites like this as a ‘championship squad’ playing against a team full of top quality players that only last year were crowned PL Champions, and make no bones about it Conte wanted the result for more than just a slight hope of a CL qualification…no top manager likes losing against another top manager especially one who’s spent hundreds of millions on players and the other who in real terms has had to live with negative spend…

…for me it was a Toon throwback display to the good old days of Keegan and Sir Bobby without some of the special qualities of their sides, but with every one of the Lads making up for it by knowing exactly what Rafa (and us) expected from them, and very determined to carry that out…Very hard to pick out any stand out player amongst them because they were all outstanding…along with the magnificent support in the ground, and the Flag and Banner display!!!

    • Billmag

Correct in everything you say, Rafa has built a TEAM with no individual star’s in it something we haven’t had for a very long time.

      • Wor Monga

exactly and it’s the only way to guarantee having a side that wants to win for each other, and not as a way only to ensure some personal individual glory for a player, as a way to a ‘bigger’ club…

…the club captain is a perfect example of it, and yesterdays banner summed it up perfectly!!!

        • Billmag

          Spot on.

  • mentalman

not sure how Yedlin deserves the same score as Murphy and Gayle

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Think it was not that long ago that you said Perez was rubbish and most of the Mag readers agreed with you. However this is not so much a football site but an anti Ashley site so I expect no different. Without Perez we would have been relegated.
Perez got ten goals this season and five assists four more than any other player.
If he is rubbish what does that make the rest of the team.

    • Wor Monga

There’s no rubbish in this team…just a group of players learning to do things together, in the right manner…obviously not yet at the highest level, but it’s only the spotted headbangers and ‘blue faced’ knobbers amongst us that would have expected that, and unfortunately most of them spend most of their days on here telling us who’s rubbish, etc, etc…

…Ayoze has always been a very talented player, and that’s why we are lucky to have him, but physically he’s not the finished article and making the step from being a very talented youngster to the absolute finished article is probably the biggest step in football…after this season at this level with Rafa he will be well on the way to making the grade, and I can’t wait to see him with us when it happens!!!
