After recent speculation, Jamaal Lascelles had a positive message for the fans.

The Newcastle captain declaring ‘This is the right club for me at the right time.’

The likes of Chelsea and Spurs have already been linked and now it has been claimed Jurgen Klopp wants Jamaal Lascelles to be added to his squad this summer.

After being Newcastle’s player of the year and leader, little wonder that clubs are being linked with him.

However, the 24 year old states ‘This is the happiest I have been…I am very happy here.’

Those latest media stories claimed Liverpool want him to provide competition to Lovren, for the right to play alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Jamaal Lascelles though makes clear what he needs: ‘You hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football.’

If there was any potential for him leaving this summer then you could only imagine it would have to be a club that was offering him the chance to come in as first choice, rather than the risk of ending up on the bench.

With still only 42 Premier League starts in his career, Jamaal Lascelles needs to be playing and you have to think if he continues this season’s form, Gareth Southgate surely can’t still ignore him.

The late season run saw an impressive partnership with Florian Lejeune forming, only 11 goals conceded in the final 12 matches.

If Martin Dubravka’s permanent deal can be sorted (please!) then Newcastle have a great defensive base to build from next season.

Jamaal Lascelles:

“This is the happiest I have been.

“I am playing week in, week out, and I am the captain here.

“The fans love me, and I have got a good relationship with them, because I love them. And we’re doing well, too.

“I am very happy here.

“You hear things…you hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football at a good club and that is what this is.

“Overall, it has been an unreal season as far as I’m concerned, both for me personally and more importantly for the club.

“This is the right club for me at the right time.

“We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive – it has so much history.

“As captain, I want to see how far we can go and potentially take this club back to where it belongs.”

……and that’s why Rafa isn’t signing a contract extension…. he’d be rubber stamping a sale and proving that the promise of a Rafalution was a dead duck!

      • Wezza147

        Spot on!

    • Jezza

Oh yes, we’ll hear it all when the lad is whisked off in Fatso’s helicopter. Transfer request, got greedy, wanted the 100 grand a week, no loyalty, turned down very generous offer to stay at NUFC, no use in keeping an unhappy player, went right off the boil towards the end of last season anyway….

      • csh

        Sounds so familiar…

  • robbersdog

He’s proud to be our captain, and we’re proud to have him as our captain. Surely Ashley wouldn’t be stupid enough to accept a big offer him?

    • csh

Don’t fool yourself! Carrol was our big goalscoring number 9 and a geordie to boot, that didn’t stop him being sold…

      • Martin Rooney

Thank god we did sell him.

    • Jezza

Don’t kid yourself. As always Ashley wants the money and that will dictate everything.

    • panther

You are aware who Ashley is?

  • FatParosite

“With Rafa Benitez set to stay and work with the allocated budget pushed his way by Mike Ashley the Magpies now need to trim their weekly outgoings meaning it’s the end of the road for some senior figures.”

Sell to get well…. Bye bye Lascelles.

  • 1957

Probably the most important player in the squad, the clear player of the season… and worth the most money in the transfer market.

  • As much as people would hate me for it, I would sell Lascelles if Chelsea/Liverpool willing to pay 75M+ and we can invest those in players and facilities.
The club has to move forward and we need money for that and if Ashley is not going away we may have to sell to buy.
No player is bigger than the club and currently a lot of money is being thrown around and we need it.

    • mentalman

Certain sacrifices would be worth it if the money was guaranteed to be reinvested

      • If we sell one good player and buy 2 of them with that money it’s always well spent and would improve the club.
Me, and most of the fans are doubting that Rafa would be given 50% of that with the talk of those money being given in installments, but people forget that if we also buy someone we don’t fork all the cash as well.
All that talk about money not being available is just false, as all the clubs pay transfer fees within a pre-agreed period of time.

    • Jezza

You mean the same way we sold Andy Carroll, Yoan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko to generate money to spend on new players.

      • Money was spent on players and on Championship with Prem wages and a lot of players being bought.
Ashley was to blame for appointing daft managers, not so much for underspending.
We bought quite a few players for McClown and he got us relegated but the players we bought weren’t bad.
Rafa did great with them afterwards and if he was appointed mid-way would have not gotten relegated.
We need to clear the deadwood and build a competitive team but we cannot bring 5 players now when we already have so many on the books.

        • Jezza

Ashley is very much guilty of underspending. In his time at our club we are the only club in the top two divisions not to have paid a club record transfer fee. When Ashley took over we were one of the biggest spending clubs in the country now we have got a transfer budget that just about puts us on a par with the smallest clubs in the Championship even though there are now record levels of money coming into the club. Eleven years ago when Ashley took over NUFC the idea of clubs like Burnley, Brighton, Watford, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swansea, Huddersfield, Stoke and Bournemouth having far more spending power than us would have been unthinkable now it is just taken as read.

          • I don’t have Ashley for trying to make a profit from NUFC, that is only normal. I hate him for constantly lying to fans and always claiming he was mislead or something equally as idiotic. The money is there. If we sell our unwanted players he should be able to inject another 30-40m on top without hesitation.
I’m pretty sure Ashley wants Rafa to sell all the deadwood first, which we have as usual in abundance.

      • Vodkamagpie

I knew you were going to say that, so predictable, you’re usual doom and gloom, I’m sooooo going to block you lol 😁, you get it, me block you haha, take your block and stick it where the sun don’t shine

        • panther

It’s not doom and gloom it’s experience of Ashley

          • Vodkamagpie

Have you actually worked out how much Newcastle has spent on transfers under ashley

      • panther

        We got Joselu

    • thewildchimp

If we sell Lascelles, the same would happen to us as when Liverpool sold Suarez.

    • panther

But at best a fraction would be reinvested

  • Martin Rooney

    Reassuring?
I think that’s a very guarded, carefully constructed statement, well prepared and non committal. It’s the right club at the right time. Tomorrow is another time and Liverpool, Chelsea, Man u et al are another type of club for a different Jamal lascelles.
Sounds like one last season with us to me.
However unlikely to be to Liverpool, it seems their penchant for 4 year payment plans is becoming a strain, with £40 million per year to payout for existing players for the next two years and £20m for a further two. player recruitment is going to rely on another Courtinho/Suarez being flogged.

    • DC1964

      You’re spot on there!

  • molend

I don’t know.Suppose he chose to stay with Newcastle for the next 8-10 years. Local legend (with all that means for him and his family), multi-millionaire. Or go to ‘big club’ play on and off for a few years, pick up an FA Cup winners medal and retire into obscurity. His agent will be pushing the latter scenario, but the lad seems a bit more intelligent to me than that. Or a meringue?

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

This reads like he’s just posturing for more money. Go get paid Jamaal.

  • Mal

Good to see that the optimistic words from our captain hasn’t stopped the negative postings.

    • nufcslf

Pitty though that fat Cash doesn’t give a flying f**k and will sell him at the same time chasing Rafa without a single thought.
