The 2018 England World Cup Squad has been named.

Gareth Southgate revealing his 23 man squad on Wednesday afternoon.

As feared, the list is missing both Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey.

With neither having been picked by Southgate for a single squad so far, it would have been a pleasant surprise if either had been included.

When it comes to who has been picked ahead of the Newcastle pair…

With Jamaal Lascelles, I would say Cahill especially is lucky, as he has been pretty rubbish this season. Southgate sticking with what he knows, as is the case with Phil Jones who hasn’t been great for Man Utd either. Harry Maguire has had a lot of positive press this season but looked really poor when Newcastle won 2-1 at Leicester last month.

As for Jonjo Shelvey…Henderson was always going to be selected and the same with Dier. Maybe though with 23 places to fill, Southgate could and probably should have found a place for Shelvey as somebody who could offer something a bit different – especially when it comes to going forward rather than the more negative play you usually see from England midfielders.

Looking at the squad overall, I find it bizarre that Danny Welbeck gets a place, I think he and Gary Cahill are the weakest selections. At least Joe Hart didn’t make it, that would have been a really really weak decision.

  • The team to beat the world, but at what?

    • Peaky

      Been spoilt pampered bas*ards….

    • Rich Lawson

      Apologies ?

  • Peaky

If “one of those faces” Pickford is first choice goalie…..god help us….he’s fuc*ing shyte…..

    • Dillon Tovak

He does look like he hangs about under a bridge!

    • Rich Lawson

There’s no 1 you would pick as no1 goalie is there, how have we got to this ?

      • Peaky

The ‘making’ of the Premier League is going to be ultimately the ‘breaking’ of the Premier League…..far far too many foreign imports with only a small % been any good…the academies etc are struggling at grass roots to find the next Gazza,Scholes,Gerrard etc….

  • Jonathan Gibson

I appreciate more what they meant by the golden generation with Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Ferdinand, Terry, A Cole, Shearer etc.. There is barely a player in this squad you can mention in the same breath…
No expectations other than a good hiding on the pitch and the stands..

    • Peaky

I’ve never heard of a few of them !!!

      • Jezza

I know what you mean, Peaky. A few weeks ago I came across a copy of the 1982 England World Cup record with a picture of the squad of 22 on the front cover. I could instantly name all 22 players, and their clubs, position they played and even their strengths and weaknesses as players. Looking at the current England squad there are a number of players I’ve never even heard of.

        • Rich Lawson

Sell your Panini sticker book now mate, they are going for big money on ebay.

        • Rich Lawson

Me too ! It says little for our chances ?

    • Jezza

That so called Golden Generation were all hugely over rated anyway. They never achieved anything for England did they.

      • Paul Patterson

If they’d had a more competent manager instead of the silly swede . .

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Talking about Swedes 2 Turnips 1
          Do we not like that
          😂😂

        • Jezza

I wouldn’t blame the manager. Those players weren’t half as good as they liked to think they were. They flattered to deceive at club level when they were surrounded by better players from overseas but they could never cut it at international tournaments. Look at Rooney, long rated as the best striker in the World by the English media, it took him three World Cups to get a single goal and even that was a two yard tap in after another player had done all the work. Compare that to Gary Lineker, two World Cups and no fewer than ten goals.

          • Rich Lawson

            6yd box,so what.goals talk,not what might have been ?

          • Jezza

Exactly. Goals talk and one goal in three World Cup tournaments clearly says that Rooney wasn’t the world class striker he was cracked up to be.

      • X,WHY,Y MAN.

        Exactly !
David “The Clothes Horse” Beckham, Being one of the most overrated footballers of all time.

        • Jezza

Beckman took a personal hairdresser to the World Cup didn’t he. That says it all about his attitude as a so called professional footballer and England player.

        • Dillon Tovak

I do still think the Sven era was quite fun though, unlike every manager since.

        • Leazes.

He was sort of like Shelvey with hair and a stick insect.

    • Jimmy_toons

Far more sizzle than sausage in that squad of players, they never delivered. When I look over the squads, or more precisely the starting line ups of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and compare them to the 1990 starting line ups, there is no comparison. I realise how good Lampard and Gerrard were, but I’d have Gascogne and Platt in front of them anyday.
The 1990 team was far superior to the two later teams…I think calling the latter two England teams the bronze generation would have been pushing it. What they should have been referred to was the “couldn’t care less, look at all the money I’m making” generation, they truly were pish.

  • panther

So thats me cancelling my holidays off work

  • Coble’s Return

I have still not seen anything to compare with Sir Bobby’s side at Italia ’90. Not one of these would make that squad. Yeah Scudamore, the Premier League has been a roaring success!

    • Peaky

As much as I can’t stand him only Kane out of that squad would get a sniff at making previous line ups….

      • Jimmy_toons

In front of Beardsley or Lineker? Not for me.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Shearer at his peak was the best striker i`ve seen

          • Peaky

Kane would definitely be in before the likes of Heskey….no one touches Shearer….he would have broken Charlton’s record long before Astro Napper if he hadn’t decided to pack in to prolong his club career.

          • Leazes.

            You a Blackburn fan then?

          • Rich Lawson

Trumps you with a Southampton reference ?

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            NO

          • Rich Lawson

Bobby Charlton wasn’t bad,but you might be a bit young for that ?

  • Paul Patterson

Even that side should get past the group stage . .

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

It won`t be any further though

      • Paul Patterson

Nope. Against any competent side, it’ll get tonked . .

  • Rich Lawson

Waist of a plane fare for most of them, not convinced many of them don’t just look on this as another line on their cv.So hat’s off to Ray Wilson who died today of Alzhimers, our left back in the team that WON the ’66 world cup and got paid tuppence.A proper footballer who as a kid I once travelled to Workington to see him turn out for Oldham, that’s how much i thought of that team. And what have the cash rich FA done to support him (a Lion) and his family thru’ what must have been very difficult years ?

    • Peaky

      Nice one Rich…👏👏

      • Rich Lawson

Thanks Peaky,I do feel strongly about the way great players of the past, in a far tougher game, are just forgotten or thrown away when they got paid b####r all and fall on hard times, sickeningly having to sell their medals and shirts just to make ends meet.

        • Philippines

Bobby Robson said he got paid 50 quid to play for England and had to get to the ground (in UK) on the bus.

          • Rich Lawson

They should have to crawl over broken glass to wear that shirt or f##k the lot of them and play Kane upfront with a mix of the U19’s and U23’s who actually seemed to care.

        • Jezza

          I agree entirely.

    • Billmag

      Very well said.👍👍

    • Leazes.

      Waste.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        😂😂😂😂

      • Rich Lawson

        Pedantic.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

          😲😲

          • Leazes.

            Thank you.

      • Peter Graham

        Tosser

    • Jezza

Spot on. Ray Wilson was ten times the player and a thousand times the man that most of today’s 20 something multi millionaire prima donna so called footballers are.

      • Rich Lawson

A man in a man’s game, and deserving of more respect because he never complained once in later years. The wages now for what are really mostly also runs sickens me to the core when I see TRULY great players from earlier years reduced to poverty with no support but just pathetic engrationating articles after they die and get a minutes clapping on a saturday. So much money in football now and so much seeming distaste for it’s history

        • Jezza

          Excellent comment.

      • Rich Lawson

Wasn’t he tho’,when was the last time you heard the phrase ”plays for the love of the game” ?

  • Billmag

Not one midfielder that can pick a pass like JJ, Cahill and Stones do me a favour both of them not first choice for there own clubs, the England team should be renamed South & North West Albion.

  • Weyhhadaway

Meaningless, England will have the same old struggle to break down the lesser group teams, Mitro will score the goals that put us out. I will be fishing or golfing.

  • paul mclaughlan

    More reasons not to watch.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

In 52 years England have had 2 great teams, The Boys of 66 & in 1990.
both teams had the 2 greatest England managers.
i cry when i see the likes of Southgate leading the Nation.

    • Rich Lawson

They probably get discount at Pizza Hut for a team meal tho’.

    • Jimmy_toons

squad was by all accounts a great squad, and some thought it a better footballing team than the ‘66 team, although that’s what my older brothers tell me. But if it wasn’t for Alex Stepney…

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

My dad watched them all, he said the best teams were 66, 70 & 90

    • Jezza

They didn’t have a great team in 1990 they just had three outstanding players. Lineker, Gascoigne and Platt. It also has to be said that the England team really rode their luck in getting to the semis that year.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

maybe you`re right, but they came awful close to winning it

    • Leazes.

Don’t cry….it could have been Allardyce but for fate.

      • foggy

        ….and greed.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        😢😢😢

    • Peaky

Hard to believe but Shilton actually made his league debut in 1966…..and look at the 3 he’s taking to Russia….

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

He`s got a keeper on standby that`s not played in 9 months

        • Rich Lawson

          He”ll be fit then ??

      • Rich Lawson

And he would have been caps ahead of anyone else if not for Clemence ? And by the way give Gordon Banks a knighthood now,why is he so far behind the outfield players, genius ? Bit of a Stoke reference for you mate.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

That useless squad chosen by the hand picked coward will not get out of the group stages.
At least if they had picked a player like Shelvey with his range of passing and vision would have given them another dimension.
The slowed down pace of International football would have suited Shelvey as well.
As usual though in this pathetic country it is all about who’s face fits their ridiculous “Role Model” façade !

I thought you picked the players that are on form at the time of a competition ?
Other countries will do it despite a “Bad Boy” reputation, But not in England as they have to keep up appearances.
Another epic failure on the way this summer from their loser lap dog Southgate who should never be an England manager !

  • East Durham Mag

A pleasant surprise? A big f*cking shock more like.

  • Dingus

I normally ask for holiday days for England world cup games. And 2 days off if they play in the knockout stages, the extra day for recovery. Not this year.

  • Dingus

Shelvey should be there. He has skill no other England player has and is in great form. He’s currently of a good state of mind too and deserves praise for how he’s gone about growing up a bit. Lascelles too, should be on his way to Russia. Not just because of his great defensive ability, but his leadership. Very little leadership in that squad, just little boys who can’t take responsibility when things aren’t going great.

    • Rich Lawson

Agree,so what if his temperant is a bit out. You are paid to manage, that means taking ”difficult” players and useing them properly in a potentially match winning situation when you need something a bit different ,otherwise what’s really the point of you ?

      • Dingus

        Spot on

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Both are not even on the reserve list of five and even if we took two squads would not be in. England by and large ignore Newcastle players. One England manager went to every Premier league ground bar one even the Stadium of Light. No guessing the ground he omitted. Early plane home for England but there will be other Newcastle players to follow who hopefully will get further.

  • Wezza147

Shelvey should have been picked. Imagine England chasing a game and needing an I nosey sun can pick out the right pass.
As for Lascelles I find it unbelievable how Phil Calimity Jones was picked – purely because he plays for Man Utd. He has been shocking, makes countless mistakes and picking him ahead of Lascelles is lunacy. IF Phil Jones gets games he will cost us big time.
But us Toon fans are used to our players not getting picked. Yes in the last few years not good enough but based on performance and form I find it baffling our two haven’t been picked. Oh well.

    • Peaky

      Agree,Jones is nowt but a gormless dork…

      • Jezza

If Shelvey played for Manchester and Jones for Newcastle who do you think would have gone to the World Cup and who would have been left behind?

    • Rich Lawson

      I’m game.What is a ”nosey sun” ?

  • Leazes.

‘Drippy’ Southgate has picked a team which plays the British game of ‘running with the ball’…. it usually flounders on the world stage because its not as good as the passing game, it’s a style which is consistent enough to get through the league stages until you meet a team playing the ‘beautiful game’….. then the next stage is the London press get themselves into a ‘right old state’ and start the blame game…..

….you know it and I think the press do too, we won’t win because you need a cold war era Russian Linesman for that!

    • Coach Clagnut

One with still fresh memories of the atrocities Germany committed on the Russian people during WW 2.

      • Leazes.

        That was the reason!

  • Scottie Chugger Dearden

I’ve never really been an England fan since 2006, players just using England to negotiate a better wage or move to another club, we’ll never have another Italia 90 how many Geordies were in that team? when they come early embarrassed I’ll look forward to Southgate being exposed for the fraud he is,

    • Jezza

Never supported the national team at all myself. As a working class kid growing up in the North East in the 70’s I never felt they represented me or my part of the country. I also never liked the fact that they played every single home game in London regardless. That always alienated me too.

      • Rich Lawson

And we always seemed to have plenty of the side playing for Scotland,Wales and N.Ireland back in the late 60’s early 70’s.Always looked for them on the telly.

  • magpiefifer

It’s madness – but no surprise – that Shelvey and Lascelles have been omitted. It is so ridiculous that the likes of Jones,Welbeck and Cahill are selected.I haven’t been bothered about the England games for a long time – and this squad choice is one major reason why!!

    • Jezza

Jones, Welbeck and Cahill play for the right teams, Shelvey and Lascelles don’t simple as that.

      • molend

Spurs well represented. More than any other club. Bet nobody expected that.

      • magpiefifer

        Agreed,but Burnley have representation,so is it anti-Newcastle!?

        • Jezza

Yes it is very much anti Newcastle. Burnley may be Nothern, unfashionable and working class just like us but they don’t get 50,000 crowds so they don’t stir up that level of resentment we do with the media and football authorities. Burnley are also in the North West which makes a big difference because a lot of powerful newspapers are based in Manchester.

Historically there has always been a bias against Newcastle players being selected for England. Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne, two of the very best English players of their generation, both knew thay had to leave Newcastle if they wanted to play for England while Kevin Keegan’s England career came to an abrupt end the minute he signed for Newcastle.

          • magpiefifer

Totally agree – this is one of the main reasons I’m not a$$ed about following the national team!
Give me NUFC football every time – even with the shadow of Ashley over us all the time.

  • Coach Clagnut

I’m supremely relaxed about 2 of our better players remaining at home. Instead of joining the ego known as the England squad they can both have a nice, relaxing family break and prepare for whatever comes next in the wonderful world we all know and love as N.U.F.C.

    • Dingus

That’s a great way of looking at it! Spot on

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

Maybe the Hoss can solve his Clagnut problem but i fear it`s to far advanced

      • Coach Clagnut

        The mustangs winnit come off.

  • ivanlogan

Shelvey with his searching chance making passes v Hendersons searching sideways retention

  • Peaky

De Bruyne,Hazard,Lukaku,Fellaini etc will be chomping at the bit wanting to get at this lot….

    • TheNutJob

      😎😎😎
      Hola

  • Rich Lawson

    ”Nothing to do,Nothing to say”

  • Tweed Mag

Too many out-of-form players and a lack of genuine creativity. Might get through the group stage, but not much further. Can’t see any leaders either.

    • TheNutJob

there isn`t any creativity in the team, certainly not in central midfield

      • Oldgeordie

Same old bunch. Won’t even make it out of the group.

      • Fireman Sam

The midfield is pants, Shelvey should be one of the first names on the team sheet

      • Jezza

When has there ever been any creativity in the England midfield? Maybe for a couple of years when Gazza was at his best before the booze took hold of him and before that the very few occasions when Glenn Hoddle actually got a game but otherwise there has never been any.

  • TheNutJob

Monkseaton will have his Engerland away shirt ready for the finals with Southgate on the back
    😂😂

  • PercyArcade

Will confirm England’s status as a quarter final team.

  • Northumberland mag

Gave up on England years ago due to the arrogance of the players getting picked and there’s always been a habit of not selecting the talented players like le tissier, gazza 1998 but this is a total disgrace that jonjos not been picked when you look who has been. Total disgrace

  • Fisherking

Southgate hopeless he tripped over into the job but rather the toon win the league Cup than England win World cup

  • Fireman Sam

The front four are alright, but the rest are average.

  • Down Under Mag

Its the same old story of a gutless manager picking players because of who they play for and not what form they are in.

Even supposing there was a question mark over Shelveys discipline… surely at least having him on the bench to bring on for the last 10 minutes when you are a goal down and have nothing to lose is worth taking him? Having someone capable of threading that top drawer pass through to Kane or pinpointing a ball over the top to Vardy? Who else is going to provide that?? Henderson?

  • Leazes.

Maybe Southgate used Graham Porters ‘Power Stats’ to make his selection.
