Shola Ameobi is now looking for a new club, or will make the decision to hang up his boots.

After failing in the League Two play-off semi-final, Notts County have revealed which players they want to keep.

Kevin Nolan deciding to release his former Newcastle teammate rather than offer him a new contract.

Shola Ameobi turns 37 in October and had already said he wasn’t sure whether he would play on beyond this 2017/18 season.

He played in 35 League Two matches this past season and scored six goals for Notts County.

However, there is still the possibility of Shola staying on with Kevin Nolan, as the Notts County boss has previously said he would love to have his former NUFC teammate on his coaching staff.

Notts County Official Announcement:

Notts County have confirmed their retained list ahead of the 2018-19 Sky Bet League Two campaign.

Player of the Season Matt Tootle is the first to commit his future to Notts by penning a new two-year agreement, whilst Jon Stead’s contract has been extended for a further season after the striker triggered an appearance clause in his deal.

Six players have been offered new deals ahead of the new campaign, while eleven others have been released upon the expiration of their contracts.

Manager Kevin Nolan said:

“I can’t thank the lads enough for their committed efforts in my first full season here at Notts County.

“These decisions are some of the hardest, if not the hardest, we make as a management team and it’s never an easy time for everyone involved.

“I would like to put on record my thanks to all of the players who are moving on and wish them all the best for their future.”

Notts County chairman and owner Alan Hardy added:

“On behalf of the club we would like to thank all the players for their efforts this season, and for those players leaving us we wish them the very best in their future endeavours.

“I’m very confident in the decisions we have made and that we will have the start of a squad which is capable of continuing with the progress this club has made in the past 16 months.”

The awful thing is you just can’t rule it out. Remember Shefki Kuqi as Andy Carroll’s replacement. Anything is possible with this rotten owner.

Good luck Shola. Not always appreciated but always gave 100%. Go and help Gateshead now gain league status.

  • Rich Lawson

Think he will play til he drops elsewhere, more interested to see that the woeful Alan Smith who I think was actually player-coach (?) has also got the bullet.

  • Mrkgw

A good pro, best of luck to him.

  • Mxpx

Maybe time for him to retire and stick on the videos of him scoring in the champions league and remember that between 2003-2006 he was the real deal

  • Mirandinha9

As a Geordie playing for the Toon, we all would have busted our gut for the ball. Shola never did. He had the physical attributes but rarely used them. I can remember him pronouncing he was going to score 20 goals one season. I don’t think he had 20 goals four years later! Special K knew a player and he had the right idea when he tried to offload him to Stoke City. Shola should never have played for the Toon anywhere near the length of time he did. He came on as a sub once against Liverpool at Anfield and the Scousers were laughing their heads off at who we were bringing on.
