“The weakest team in terms of talent that Rafa Benitez has ever had” – Owen Hargreaves
Owen Hargreaves has been talking about Rafa Benitez and the season Newcastle United have had.
The Magpies recovering from a terrible run from October to December, really turning things around in 2018.
Any promoted team would very happily settle for being safe with five or six matches to go and despite being the biggest ‘name’ of the three promoted clubs, Newcastle found themselves in a far weaker position as Mike Ashley failed to provide anywhere near the backing in the transfer market that the owners of Brighton and Huddersfield did.
Reviewing these past eight or nine months, Owen Hargreaves believes this will be one Rafa Benitez’ ‘proudest seasons as a manager’, due to what he has achieved.
Whilst praising a number of players for their contributions, including Lascelles, Shelvey, Diame and Kenedy…
Owen Hargreaves does though believe that this Newcastle side is ‘the weakest team in terms of talent, Rafa Benitez has ever had.’
Whilst some people have gone overboard throughout the season, calling Newcastle a ‘Championship side in the Premier League’, it has to be admitted that until this recent run of form/results took Newcastle into the top half and safety, plenty of United supporters were prepared say something along those lines.
Maybe not a Championship side but certainly one of the weakest ones in the top tier when it came to ‘talent’, lucky to have a manager like Rafa Benitez to organise and inspire them.
I think certainly that whatever the case this current campaign, Newcastle desperately need more quality added this summer in order to be sure of being able to compete next season.
Owen Hargreaves talking to official Premier League site:
“If there were three managers as candidates for Manager of The Year, Rafa Benitez would third in line, after Pep Guardiola and Sean Dyche.
“Rafa Benitez has been exceptional.
“And with that group of players which he has…
“Let us be honest, this is the weakest team in terms of talent, Rafa Benitez has ever had.
“I think it will also be one of his proudest seasons as a manager.
“I like Slimani, I think he has got something, obviously he hasn’t had a terrific run at Leicester.
“Kenedy has been exceptional.
“This partnership, Shelvey and Diame, has been immense for them.
“Lascelles, the form he has been in, the captain and leader of the team.”
