It is Leicester v Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, with eighth against twelfth.
BBC Sport have published the likelihood of either club winning, based on the predictions of ‘super computer’ SAM.
(SAM (Sports Analytics Machine) is a super-computer created by Professor Ian McHale at the University of Liverpool that is used to predict the outcome of football matches.
SAM’s verdict is…
Most probable score: 1-0
Probability of home win: 52%
Probability of away win: 22%
Probability of draw: 26%
The ‘super computer’ stats prediction may be 52% in favour for Leicester to win but another way of looking at it, is Newcastle are 50/50 to get something, or if you want to be pedantic…48/52.
Newcastle have won three (all at home) of their last five Premier League matches and actually the recent away form is excellent, despite winning only three on the road all season.
Newcastle predictably lost at both Liverpool and Man City but the other four of their last six away matches saw wins at West Ham and Stoke, plus draws at Palace and Bournemouth – plus Rafa’s men were 1-0 and 2-0 up in those two drawn games, so plenty room for optimism.
Meanwhile, Leicester have drawn their last three PL home games against Stoke Bournemouth and Swansea.
Match of The Day commentator Mark Scott’s pre-match notes:
“Both sides will be feeling pretty happy with their lot as they hit the home straight.
“Leicester have swapped relegation worries for European aspirations since Claude Puel’s appointment in October, with the Foxes just three points behind Burnley in the race for seventh place and potential Europa League qualification – and they face the Clarets next weekend.
“Rafael Benitez deserves tremendous credit too having guided Newcastle clear of trouble and to within a win of the top half under challenging conditions.
“With the Magpies’ only league losses since the turn of the year coming at Manchester City and Liverpool.”
