Some very strange comments from Huddersfield fans after losing at Newcastle
It was a one goal margin when Huddersfield fans last visited St James Park but it was them who left celebrating, after David Wagner brought an enterprising team to win three points back in August 2016.
This time around, the expectations of the visiting supporters were much higher, in terms of that they are now watching a Premier League side and hope to be doing the same come August.
Reading the comments below, it is clear that many/most of the Huddersfield fans don’t believe that the more negative tactics Wagner is using in his safety bid are the right way to go.
As for their comments overall on the match, it is amusing just how many of their supporters are so keen to try and claim that Newcastle are rubbish and/or were no better than the Terriers yesterday.
With just one point separating the two clubs before Saturday, Huddersfield obviously weren’t exactly facing Barcelona.
However, only a fool would claim that Newcastle didn’t fully deserve to get the three points.
Newcastle had 18 shots to their 4, Huddersfield didn’t have a single effort on target, whilst the home side dominated the game and possession (63%).
Just because you don’t end up scoring until the 80th minute, doesn’t mean that you were unlucky. However, it does though appear to give plenty of people something to cling onto, like driftwood after a shipwreck.
Huddersfield fans commenting via their top Down At The Mac message board:
‘Think what makes today look not so bad is that Newcastle were as equally dire as we were.’
‘Thought we deserved a point, just got done by one clear chance, oh well.’
‘Are we simply ignoring the:
– Gayle 1 on 1 where he put it wide and it was easier to score
– Gayle sitter from 6 yards he blazed over
– Ritchie 1 on 1 which Lossl saved well
– Shelvey shot on the edge of the area which went an inch wide, should have hit the target
And that was all before HT!! Basically we’re lucky Gayle is sh…’
‘I was surprised how poor Newcastle were, if we’d have clung on that’d have been a decent point, really poor goal to concede…
The main issue is that we were never going to score past them…
The margins for error are getting finer.’
‘No, they were rubbish, as I say took one clear chance.’
‘A clean sight on goal from that distance by a player of Shelvey’s quality, whatever most fans think of him, is a clear chance that he should have done better with, similarly to Gayle’s. Shelvey’s 40m attempted worldie is not a clear chance.
Saying we were unlucky to lose because they had one clear chance is nonsense. It’s just unfortunate it was 5th time lucky for them.’
‘After last year, Newcastle are essentially the same team, yet we have strengthened our team quite a bit.
We have the ability to take a game to Newcastle and we sat back looking for a smash and grab.
When we have played well this year, it’s been an all out assault on teams, pressing them into mistakes. We are capable of this type of game v Newcastle but we didn’t play this way and that’s what fans take exception to. Mentally, DW shackles the players because a player will think, I can beat them, but is then asked to play a negative game.
At the 70’ mark, it was quite apparent that the game was there to be won. The first indication of that was the impact of Col’s fresh legs. We were now getting penetration and the game was starting to stretch. Rafa recognised this and made changes. We did nothing until it was too late. It’s these decisions which will be the deciding factor between staying up and relegation.’
‘That tackle from Kennedy is an awful one on Kachunga. Atkinson didn’t even give a foul yet was yellow, borderline red.
Yet Collin and Mooy got booked for nothing.’
‘Disgusting tackle, potential ankle breaker. Certainly meets the criteria for a red card in that it was reckless and endangered the safety of his opponent.’
‘We were definitely better than we were at Stoke but we lost again.
To an average to poor side.’
‘Palace game wasn’t great for us but didn’t make me feel we were going down after it. Just they were far better than us when they are at it.
Today we did well to get to half time level. The ball ran across our area several times and Lössl made a big save too.
Second half we looked much better but never really looked like scoring.
Always felt they may well nick one and when they did, that was that.
Bit like Stoke away, we have lost again to a team that aren’t that good and we need to be better at Brighton.’
‘I came away from Palace thinking we looked like a demoralised team who would probably be relegated . I have to say I’m surprised about how bad people thought we were today.
We limited them to a couple of chances and before they scored it could have gone either way imo . You kind of know when we concede though that that’s it. It wasn’t great but I didn’t think it was that bad.’
‘14 flights of stairs before it started.Knackered climbing that lot.’
‘Two weeks since we were outclassed v Palace, two weeks to sort out a strategy to get points, and goals…and he comes up with yet another re-run of a multi failed gameplan. Not good enough.’
‘Can anybody remember when we got a single point this season when we’ve sat back and attempted to soak up the pressure?
Wagner is his own worst enemy, he simply doesn’t learn from his mistakes. We’ve shown time and again that we are a much better team when we approach the game on the front foot. Folk won’t complain so much if we at least go down fighting.’
‘We were not worth a point.
We were lucky to go in level at half time.
Newcastle has two very good chances and a few half chances in the first half. We had no chances at all.
We were better in the second half but still didn’t create anything.
Wagner needs to learn that we cannot grind out results. We should have taken the game to Newcastle today. If we had lost then at least we lost trying but to lose the way we did is boring as hell for the fans.’
‘The game was there to be won but Newcastle took their chance.’
‘Back home after my first taste of watching Town in the Premiership (long story why) and it was an utter disappointment.
I look back at August 2016 when we came to St James Park massively the underdogs and had a go and we won 2-1. Today we were a point behind a Newcastle team that have barely strengthened since that match and we were scared to have a go at them until we went behind.
I will always be thankful for the roller coaster that Wagner gave me last season and the thrill of winning the play offs against all odds but I feel we are slipping towards the drop without a fight at the moment and that is not what I thought the ‘Terrier Identity’ was all about.
To add insult to injury I now have to sit in the office in Newcastle on Tuesday next to a Newcastle season ticket holder.’
‘Biggest match of the season and we didn’t show up. That was absolutely rubbish.’
