It was a one goal margin when Huddersfield fans last visited St James Park but it was them who left celebrating, after David Wagner brought an enterprising team to win three points back in August 2016.

This time around, the expectations of the visiting supporters were much higher, in terms of that they are now watching a Premier League side and hope to be doing the same come August.

Reading the comments below, it is clear that many/most of the Huddersfield fans don’t believe that the more negative tactics Wagner is using in his safety bid are the right way to go.

As for their comments overall on the match, it is amusing just how many of their supporters are so keen to try and claim that Newcastle are rubbish and/or were no better than the Terriers yesterday.

With just one point separating the two clubs before Saturday, Huddersfield obviously weren’t exactly facing Barcelona.

However, only a fool would claim that Newcastle didn’t fully deserve to get the three points.

Newcastle had 18 shots to their 4, Huddersfield didn’t have a single effort on target, whilst the home side dominated the game and possession (63%).

Just because you don’t end up scoring until the 80th minute, doesn’t mean that you were unlucky. However, it does though appear to give plenty of people something to cling onto, like driftwood after a shipwreck.

Huddersfield fans commenting via their top Down At The Mac message board:

‘Think what makes today look not so bad is that Newcastle were as equally dire as we were.’

‘Thought we deserved a point, just got done by one clear chance, oh well.’

‘Are we simply ignoring the:

– Gayle 1 on 1 where he put it wide and it was easier to score

– Gayle sitter from 6 yards he blazed over

– Ritchie 1 on 1 which Lossl saved well

– Shelvey shot on the edge of the area which went an inch wide, should have hit the target

And that was all before HT!! Basically we’re lucky Gayle is sh…’

‘I was surprised how poor Newcastle were, if we’d have clung on that’d have been a decent point, really poor goal to concede…

The main issue is that we were never going to score past them…

The margins for error are getting finer.’

‘No, they were rubbish, as I say took one clear chance.’

‘A clean sight on goal from that distance by a player of Shelvey’s quality, whatever most fans think of him, is a clear chance that he should have done better with, similarly to Gayle’s. Shelvey’s 40m attempted worldie is not a clear chance.

Saying we were unlucky to lose because they had one clear chance is nonsense. It’s just unfortunate it was 5th time lucky for them.’

‘After last year, Newcastle are essentially the same team, yet we have strengthened our team quite a bit.

We have the ability to take a game to Newcastle and we sat back looking for a smash and grab.

When we have played well this year, it’s been an all out assault on teams, pressing them into mistakes. We are capable of this type of game v Newcastle but we didn’t play this way and that’s what fans take exception to. Mentally, DW shackles the players because a player will think, I can beat them, but is then asked to play a negative game.

At the 70’ mark, it was quite apparent that the game was there to be won. The first indication of that was the impact of Col’s fresh legs. We were now getting penetration and the game was starting to stretch. Rafa recognised this and made changes. We did nothing until it was too late. It’s these decisions which will be the deciding factor between staying up and relegation.’

‘That tackle from Kennedy is an awful one on Kachunga. Atkinson didn’t even give a foul yet was yellow, borderline red.

Yet Collin and Mooy got booked for nothing.’

‘Disgusting tackle, potential ankle breaker. Certainly meets the criteria for a red card in that it was reckless and endangered the safety of his opponent.’

‘We were definitely better than we were at Stoke but we lost again.

To an average to poor side.’

‘Palace game wasn’t great for us but didn’t make me feel we were going down after it. Just they were far better than us when they are at it.

Today we did well to get to half time level. The ball ran across our area several times and Lössl made a big save too.

Second half we looked much better but never really looked like scoring.

Always felt they may well nick one and when they did, that was that.

Bit like Stoke away, we have lost again to a team that aren’t that good and we need to be better at Brighton.’

‘I came away from Palace thinking we looked like a demoralised team who would probably be relegated . I have to say I’m surprised about how bad people thought we were today.

We limited them to a couple of chances and before they scored it could have gone either way imo . You kind of know when we concede though that that’s it. It wasn’t great but I didn’t think it was that bad.’

‘14 flights of stairs before it started.Knackered climbing that lot.’

‘Two weeks since we were outclassed v Palace, two weeks to sort out a strategy to get points, and goals…and he comes up with yet another re-run of a multi failed gameplan. Not good enough.’

‘Can anybody remember when we got a single point this season when we’ve sat back and attempted to soak up the pressure?

Wagner is his own worst enemy, he simply doesn’t learn from his mistakes. We’ve shown time and again that we are a much better team when we approach the game on the front foot. Folk won’t complain so much if we at least go down fighting.’

‘We were not worth a point.

We were lucky to go in level at half time.

Newcastle has two very good chances and a few half chances in the first half. We had no chances at all.

We were better in the second half but still didn’t create anything.

Wagner needs to learn that we cannot grind out results. We should have taken the game to Newcastle today. If we had lost then at least we lost trying but to lose the way we did is boring as hell for the fans.’

‘The game was there to be won but Newcastle took their chance.’

‘Back home after my first taste of watching Town in the Premiership (long story why) and it was an utter disappointment.

I look back at August 2016 when we came to St James Park massively the underdogs and had a go and we won 2-1. Today we were a point behind a Newcastle team that have barely strengthened since that match and we were scared to have a go at them until we went behind.

I will always be thankful for the roller coaster that Wagner gave me last season and the thrill of winning the play offs against all odds but I feel we are slipping towards the drop without a fight at the moment and that is not what I thought the ‘Terrier Identity’ was all about.

To add insult to injury I now have to sit in the office in Newcastle on Tuesday next to a Newcastle season ticket holder.’

‘Biggest match of the season and we didn’t show up. That was absolutely rubbish.’

If you don’t get a shot on target over 90 minutes in this league you deserve nowt.
Based on chances, you were lucky to be in the game at half time.
Your manager should also be told this . .

  • Fireman Sam

Actually hope they go down now after reading those delusional comments. However, the current bottom three would be fitting.

    • gallowgate26

Their last three games are against Everton, Man City and Arsenal. So they are not safe at all, Brighton and Watford are now massive games for them! I hope they stay up though as so few northern clubs are left.

      • ToonTom

Their last four games are against Chelsea, Everton, Man City and Arsenal!
Despite this, I think they’ll scrape 36 points and survive.

    • Steve Smith

Would like to see Southampton win their game in hand and swap places with “Palissssss”

      • gallowgate26

Stoke, Saints, Palace, West Ham, I’d be happy to see two of that four go down. It’ll be funny if Palace go down considering the squad they have on paper. Stoke, just an ugly unfashionable team that belong in the championship, Saints – because of Hughes and that they sold a player for £75m and are in theory much stronger than us financially. West Ham because just, well do I even need to explain? I have no beef with Huddersfield or Swansea though, I’d like to see Cardiff vs Swansea as a rivalry next season and to make it trully the BPL rather than just the EPL.

    • Mal

Your making the mistake of assuming that those comments are representative of most Huddersfield supporters – I don’t think they are. I chatted to a few of them in the pub before the game – just normal fans hoping their team stays up.

    • Kev Newcastle England

      Agree

  • gallowgate26

Brings a wry smile when fans of Stoke, Southampton and Huddersfield have been telling us how rubbish our team are… ha ha !! Sent them all packing, should have been another 3 or 4-0 game yesterday. The scoreline flattered them! Deserved a point my ass, they deserved, and got nowt.

  • Soldier

results such as yesterdays just paper over the cracks, we are a bog average team & are going nowhere under Ashley

    • Wor Monga

Well we aren’t going down into League 1, like your lot, and that’s a fact, squaddy!!!

      • Soldier

It`s squaddie & i drive a round trip of 180 miles every home game,
when you do that come back & shout your big mouth off.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

what he says is correct, pull your head out of your a$$ you idiot

  • Peaky

Mark Hughes on the verge of relegating TWO teams this season…..but you know what…..none of it,not one iota….will be his fault.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      😂😂😂
your club 1 doon to the Gunners

      • Peaky

Think there’s a good chance we’ll beat Arsenal at home….they were booed off at half time apparently…

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

          Make 2-0
          ha ha
we`ll give them a run for their money, the match is just awful

          • Peaky

Think the current bottom 3 will be the final bottom 3 now….WBA & Stoke definitely gone and Southampton’s run in is tough as hell.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            It`s looking that way

          • Peaky

What is it with teams in red/white striped shirts & the constant need for relegation…..I don’t know ??
            😂🤣😂

          • Kev Newcastle England

Only WBA deffo gone…any 2 from 5 after that.

    • Albert Stubbins

      Another allardyce!!

  • Andy Mac

“Basically we’re lucky Gayle is sh…” Yup !

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

they weren`t at the races in the 1st half, we could have been 3 up.
poor old Dwight was doing a Hoss but it happens.
on another day he`d have got at least 2

      • Arty Hume

Sometimes it just doesn’t go for you and Gayle had a bad day at the office, so what, we won! Don’t forget without Gayle last season we may not have got to the P.L, have some respect for the lad! Anyone can have a shyte day, he’ll come good again next week or the week after, his misses were very fine margins and if you cannot appreciate or see that you may well have seen a lot of football, but not played it!

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Wind your neck in, i say it as i see it, last season gone it`s here & now that counts. he also has to many shyte days like the rest of the strikers because they just aren`t up to standard

          • Andy Mac

I could be wrong MMM but I think Arty’s reply was aimed at me not you. However you’re right about him having too many sh days.

PL stats show he’s scored 20 goals in the top flight but he’s also missed 17 “Big chances” during his PL career. Dont know about you but there were another two “Big Chances” missed yesterday ?

IMO we should have sold him to Fulham while we had the chance

        • Kev Newcastle England

Agree mate he was unlucky, and he doesnt hide.

  • Toon Army AZ

Really surprised David Wagner did not have the Terriers gegenpress us aggressively. Made no sense at all for them to sit back and concede 63% possession to us. Klopp would be disappointed in his protégée, IMHO.

Best wishes to the Terriers for success and survival. It would be nice to see all 3 promoted sides survive. Doesn’t happen very often.

  • Mrkgw

We deserved to beat Huddersfield – fact. Time they got over themselves. They never have anything constructive to say and they will be no loss to the Premiership if relegated.

    • Kev Newcastle England

      Good post

  • Wor Monga

What’s the point of articles like this telling us what fans of other clubs thought about the game when we saw exactly what happened in the game…they did absolutely nowt and deserved nowt from it…

…Rafa got rubbished by all the pundits (and TV viewers) for setting a team up the exact same way to try and not get steamrollered by free scoring Man C yet Wagner tried exactly the same tactic against us (even though we are a lot less of a threat going forward than Citeh) and the ‘Yorkie Puddins’ think they deserved something from the game…

…They did deserve something though…a good hiding, but our own bad luck and bad finishing saved them from that rather than anything on their part!!!

    • gallowgate26

I’m just thankful on this Easter Sunday that as the seasons worn on, there are some real ‘no hopers’ and parsnips at the bottom. That’s not how it started in the first couple of months, it looked like it was going to be very competitive at one stage. Under Ashley we just have to pray for small mercies.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

The only thing you could say in defence of their views is the second half performance was much better and they could have snatched a draw.
Would that have been a fair result ?, Definitely not because the first half should have seen Newcastle home and host with 3 or 4 goals on board with the game finished !

  • TheFatController

The problem for Huddersfield is that they got 6 points from their first two games, one win at palace who were mesmerised completely by de Boers tactics.

Since then they’ve been the Championship side running on fumes after Xmas.

There were stats that said Rafa’s liverpool always finished strongly. When you see a treatment room this week with the mighty Hoss as the only patient, and out recent form, a lot of Rafa’s decisions seem to make sense now, as around us Saints, Stoke, and to some extent Palace have lost their game plans and composure.

Huddersfield fans are just angry Wagner doesn’t seem to have the answers to pulling them out of a goal scoring rut. He spent money, they’re just unable to deliver.

Rafa’s answer to having no money to spend on a goalscorer was to shore us up completely at the back – job done looking at goals against since Xmas.

  • Ba ba.

😂 😂 what game were they watching.
Come over a bit bitter to me.

  • gallowgate26

Some talk about Huddersfield spending loads of money, Q. which Huddersfield player would you put in our starting 11 yesterday? Maybe a striker?

    • Albert Stubbins

I like the little bald heeded kid. I think he’s better than wor bald heeded kid. Can we swap.

    • Lhc

      Aaron Mooy

      • gallowgate26

        Ahead of Shelvey or Diame?

        • Ba ba.

No chance… They are now a very good midfield pairing.

  • Cyril Sooth

The trouble with Newcastle fans is that they think they are a top 4 pending Champions League club. The game on Saturday was an even contest there to be won by either side and Newcastle with the home advantage got the single goal that won it! End of ! Top half table finish keep dreaming you are delusional!

    • molend

      ‘Nice one Cyril…’ Gerroff

    • Albert Stubbins

Lol. No we don’t. We spend f all even compared to little clubs like uddersfield ffs

    • Paul Patterson

You need to look at the table. We are only two points off the top ten, you muppet! That’s fact, not deluded fiction.

      • Tommy Adds

With a game in hand !

    • Shields Mag

Dear me you haven’t got a clue have you……

    • Mike

eh where do u get that from? all we want is decent football nothing else 60 years of not winning anything proves 50k are not glory hunters.

      • Kev Newcastle England

Its there ignorant attitudes, hope they go down

    • Jezza

Still bitter about being outnumbered 3 to 1 at your own ground in 1984 I see.

      • Kev Newcastle England

God what a day that was.2 nil up and still couldnt beat us.

    • Kev Newcastle England

      Clown

  • Phil Yare

if they had a shot on target they could have got a point
if they had 2 shots on target they could have won
if they had 3 shots on target they could have won 1-3
if they had 4 shots on target they could have won 1-4 etc…

but they didn’t have a shot on target
    and they were generally garbage
and we should have scored more

    how did they deserve anything?

    • gallowgate26

b… b….but. Noocarsel are rubbish, rubbish I tells you. My grand papa and Matt Le Tiss said so (before we smashed his team 3-0), how can this be? We deserved a point against those deluded toons.Think they are champs league they do. Boo hoo hoo. We deserved to win in the second half!!

  • Ram Kishore

Graham porter .. just because Huddersfield fans don’t share your opinion they are not fools..
Just like Huddersfield fans we too moaned about not getting a point while losing to clubs in November..

    You are so based fool
