Dwight Gayle had an unconventional route to the Premier League.

Released from Arsenal’s Academy, the striker ended up playing non-league football.

Turning out for Ryan FC, Stansted and Bishop’s Stortford.

His career finally getting back on track via Dagenham & Redbridge, before moving up to the Championship with Peterborough in November 2012, then quickly up to the Premier League with Crystal Palace only seven months later.

That process seeing then a step backwards to go forward again, leaving the Palace bench to spend a year in the Championship with Newcastle, before the Magpies moved back up with Dwight Gayle to the top tier.

Scoring 13 goals in 28 Championship starts for Peterborough convinced Palace to pay £6m five years ago, and now current Peterborough manager Steve Evans, believes the club have a player who is another Dwight Gayle.

Jack Marriott has scored 32 goals in all competitions this season for the League One side, including 26 in the league.

Peterborough United manager Steve Evans comparing Jack Marriott to Dwight Gayle:

“If Marriott’s in a Championship side that makes chances, he would be the league’s leading goalscorer.

“This boy’s up there with the Dwight Gayles of this world and he (Gayle) was exceptional.

“One thing we have is, just simply, the best goalscorer I’ve ever worked with. He’s absolutely stunning.

“That young man is most likely going to go and join an absolutely huge club in the summer…

“That is unless the chairman continues to do what he did in the January window when he was turning down, I think, around £6.5m or £7m.

“I have said he’s better than some of the strikers I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with Chris Wood at Leeds (now Burnley), but Marriott is the best finisher I have ever worked with.”
