Spurs fans have been responding to media claims that Jamaal Lascelles is being lined up to replace Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian international defender is all but certain to leave the North London club after the 29 year old’s wage demands proved a bit too rich for the Premier League club.

Alderweireld has been excellent at Tottenham and will have no shortage of takers, clubs who can easily afford his wage demands, with Barcelona and PSG amongst the clubs credited with interest.

As for Spurs fans, they have had plenty to say (as have Newcastle supporters) about the possibility of their club potentially signing Lascelles.

In the 25 PL games he has started this season the former Forest player has been THE star of this Newcastle team, the team averaging less than a goal a match conceded when he has played.

In 25 Jamaal Lascelles starts, only 23 goals conceded, only conceded three goals once (at Man City). NUFC have conceded twice in another four of those games, meaning 20 out of 25 Lascelles starts have seen one or zero goals conceded. Only twice have Newcastle lost by a two goal margin with the captain in the starting eleven, away at Man City and Liverpool.

So from afar, what do Spurs fans think of the idea?

An interesting mix of views.

Comments from Spurs fans via various Tottenham message boards and Twitter:

‘We watched him many times before he signed for Newcastle.

At one point I was expecting him to sign.’

‘I would like this. This guy is a leader of men. Wouldn’t mind getting him.’

‘I rate him and he looks like a leader.’

‘Hope not LOL.’

‘Lascelles a good option to get another English player on the books. I still refuse to believe that Evans is a serious option.’

‘Living in the North East and being married to a Geordie, watched a few Newcastle matches.

Lascelles good player and great attitude knows the league, Poch would defo make him better and I bet would get him in the England team.’

‘Good defender, lots of personality, not sure he’s good enough on the ball for the way we play.’

‘So underrated.’

Anyone who watches Newcastle would know how brilliant this lad is. Top player and should be in the England team.’

‘Good player has been a rock for Rafa tho I’d prefer de ligt.’

‘Been impressed with Lascelles whenever seen him.’

‘Yeah I must admit that was my first reaction too. Don’t want Evans personally and haven’t seen as much of de Ligt but sure he’s good but Lascelles has been excellent quite a bit this season.’

‘God no.’

‘Lascelles is a very good player, Poch can make him even better.’

Lascelles and Evans both not good enough in my opinion.’

‘I remember the interest around him at Forest. I wonder what’s changed.

I hear he’s quite a leader and gets behind the gaffer.’

‘Great choice, good player, make this happen.’

‘Only spurs could replace Toby with Lasceles.’

  • Kneebotherm8

They’re probably wary after the Sissoko debacle……….

    • TheFatController

They probably have nightmares about sissoko signing still. Thought he was off to Everton, then he arrives at spurs.

Cue reactions like Edward Woodward going into the Wicker Man….

  • TheNutJob

Fatty will sell him at the drop of a hat, Rafa or no Rafa, then after a dozen games for Spurs he`ll be in the England team, oh & Spurs will more than double his wages ask Moussa or Gazza

  • TheNutJob

Jabba, jabba, jabba, oot oot oot, sack the board

    • Rich Lawson

      Both of them.

      • Mark Potter

Eh? There’s only one member of “the board” (of Directors).

  • Graham Chapman

Sadly Lascelles is as good as gone, now that the so called “big” clubs are on the sniff. We should focus our efforts on getting silly money for him

    • Jezza

I’d rather see him go for nothing because what ever ammount of silly money he goes for will just disappear into Ashley’s pocket.

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

        you are lying, again

        • Danimal

Yes, it’ll be reinvested in the squad, as always.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

It certainly will not be pocketed as Jezza repeatedly says without any evidence. It will remain within the club.

          • Lakeland Mag

But not be spent on replacing Lascelles with anyone as good or better. We’ll get some other lesser quality bargain basement replacement, as that’s the Ashley way.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I doubt we’d get someone as good, you are right. We’d have to look at getting someone doing well in the championship or from overseas who wants to get in to the EPL and use the money elsewhere in the squad. He’s going to be ambitious but personally, I’d like to see us convince Lascelles to stay another year and unless Man yoo come in for him, I think we could do that.

As Southampton have shown, being stubborn doesn’t really help.

          • Ram Kishore

Being stubborn doesn’t help but at the same time losing a player doesn’t help too..
Look at what’s the problem Saints are facing..Boom..Do we want that..yes we can..
I wonder if they had retained some players they could be better..
Yes it’s impossible at the same time for a player to resist that kind of opportunity
More money, trophies, more fans, more status..
Let’s wait and see after the season ends

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Southampton have a wonderful academy, they have got away with it because of this but for this system to work, the manager has to buy into the process as well as the owners. The change of ownership has bought more money but a change of approach.

I tend to agree, if we can keep hold of him for anothe rseason and add to the squad, that wouold be great. AFAIK, he’s a Man yoo fan, he’s the sort of player Mouriniho would love but most likely when he’s a little more established.

          • Ram Kishore

No way Mourinho’s gonna buy him rn.. maybe one more season is still needed..

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            You’ve noticed!!

The problem unearthing a gem is it’s difficult. Lascelles was bought in young and took time to adjust. There was a lad called Notts Toon who said he knew all about Lascelles and Darlow saying neither were up to it. From my point of view, Lascelles always looked promising but defenders tend to at their best at 28-32 and then their legs go, until they are 26, mistakes happen all too often and the NUFC crowd is unforgiving.

          • Jezza

Yes constantly weakening the playing squad for personal profit most definitely is the Ashley way.

          • Mark Potter

What personal profit? Other than repaying the interest free loans he made to pay wages in the Championship seasons, how much money has gone from the club to Mike Ashley? Zero.

          • Danimal

Where abouts in the club? Another one of those time capsules under one of the stands? It never gets spent on players or on reducing that loan. Is the club being run so badly that it needs to keep making big player sales just to pay the electricity bill?

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

It’s in the bank or paid out in wages etc.

The club is run in a way where it pays for itself, this compares to the previous method of running losses and bank debt until the bank say ‘no’.

          • Jezza

The only thing the incoming transfer money gets spent on within the club is “stadium improvements” in the form of yet more giant S****s D****t advertising signs.

      • Leazes.

He can’t just take money like that, the Andy Carroll money went to pay for improvements to the training facilities which will happen sometime I guess, maybe. Oh hang on he sold off a chunk of little Benton for housing development didn’t he? It’ll probably be put aside for the next relegation that Charnley is masterminding.

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Which chunk of the training ground was sold? This sounds like one of your much repeated lies Mr Leazes, you do have form for this sort of thing you little fibber.

          • Chuck D

            Ask Taylor Wimpey

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            When was the land sold?

      • relaxed

        spot on

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

it’s not spot on, Jezza is once again lying.

    • Toonrobbybobson

In most cases id say yes but as long as Rafa stays Lascelles is going nowhere. Lascelles wont want to sit on a bench and not be a captain now. Hes a big fish at Newcastle he wont be elsewhere. Rafa will keep him here thats the key. We have a solid base and hes not the finished article. Anycase he would cost way more than quoted.

      • Jezza

Rafa doesn’t get to decide whether a player stays or goes. Surely the recent January window made it clear to all and sundry that Rafa has got no say whatsoever in the club’s transfer business. If a decent bid comes in Lascelles wil be gone and there will be nothing Rafa can do about it. Ashley will want the money and as always that will dictate everything.

        • Toonrobbybobson

I genuinely dont think in Lascelles case he will be sold. I think Lascelles wil stay at least another year and we would get even more money then. Soon as hes England capped double his price. It will happen as well and Newcastle/Ashley wont be daft enough to miss that financial boat.

          • Jezza

Don’t build your hopes up, marra. He’ll be gone before next season, I guarantee it.

As for the England cap it’s a chicken and egg situation. I think he’ll need to move to a so called “bigger club” to get that first cap.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Jezza, you are not good d at guaranteeing anything, you tell too many porkies. If Lacelles wants to go, he’ll be sold, if he wants to stay another year, he’ll get a new contract.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

He will go if he wants to go. If he doesn’t, he will stay and get a new contract.

          • Mark Potter

He signed a new long contract already. People are forgetting about that. And it was big enough that his agent took a significant wodge of cash from the club. If he was looking to leave, then he wouldn’t have signed it.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

He’s not looking to. Leave but you can’t blame him for considering a move. I’d hope he gives us another year.

        • Mark Potter

No, it didn’t at all. Rafa wanted Kenedy, had pursued him last summer but Conte wouldn’t let him leave, Rafa got Kenedy.

Rafa wanted a new keeper, pursued various options last summer, but had difficulties making space in the squad with 4 keepers on the books and none of them wanting to leave. Not getting rid of Krul until the final days of the window and Darlow turning down the move to Boro the club negotiated. Rafa got his new keeper.

Now please don’t try to tell me that Charnley signed Dubravka behind the back of Rafa. That makes no sense whatsoever. Especially when they made space for him by loaning Woodman for next to nothing, and continue to pay Premiership wages to Darlow and Elliott, with the latter now not even getting in the squad. There is no sniff that any of this was done for financial reasons. Rafa’s judgement was that he needed a better keeper, and this could make a difference between staying up or being relegated. Proven correct.

And remember, you went to bed the night before deadline day predicting that all of Newcastle’s business was done for that window. Eight players moved in/out the club after your (failed) prediction. Including a top top keeper. Great signing by Rafa.

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I’d have thought Man U would fancy him.

  • Peaky

Injury free he’s got 7 games left for us….we will have to deal with it then move on….nowt we can do about it…

  • Lord

Interesting to see more than one supporter think ‘Poch’ will make him better than Rafa can, given that Rafa has pretty much taken him from unknown to England candidate.

If he were to improve at Spurs it’ll be because he would be at an ambitious club that consistently invests in top players and brings on young players too. 🤔

  • Peaky

‘Poch’ will make him a better player will he….at Real Madrid…..arrogant cockney bas*ard….

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

Lascelles WILL be sold if a top bid comes in

      • Peaky

      • steve

So WILL anyone in world football.

  • Leazes.

In my mind Lascelles is already gone, in Ryders mind he’s calling him a traitor, and in Porters mind he’s looking to the positions that the money will strengthen.

  • Rich Lawson

Alderweireld wont go,Daniel Levy will take it to the wire and make a better offer. If they are to compete in the Champ’s League and at home they need to hang on to players like him.Spurs have just reported £306mil turnover and are about to increase their capacity by 26,000.The money will be there.

    • Danimal

Increasing turnover and capacity at the same time as having a good team on the pitch. Now there’s a novel idea. Obviously no one’s explained to them that it doesn’t work like that.

  • Mike

if the ££££ is enuff then its goodbye to him

  • kingfisher

What about this then, how much would you be happy to take for Lascelles,£25,30,40 million?.Every player has his price, and as Peaky says, there’s nothing we can do about it.With regards to the silly money that’s floating around in the Prem, and taking into account his future potential as an England regular ( similar to Liverpool paying over the top for big Andy) I would say £50 million is a good figure to start with.
It used to only be strikers who could command large transfer fees but recently even defenders have been going for silly money.

    • Andy Mac

We can do something about it. We could become a club with ambition and a desire to build for the future.

However this is Fatman we’re talking about………
