Rafa Benitez confirms meetings with Newcastle United on new contract – Hopes it is resolved quickly…
Rafa Benitez was never going to find Saturday’s match to be the main focus of his press conference.
In pre-empting the expected questions from the assembled media on Friday afternoon…
Rafa revealed that his ‘representatives’ have been talking with Lee Charnley and he hopes something can be sorted quickly in terms of extending his stay/contract at Newcastle United.
Although his comments did come with a ‘We will see how it goes.’
The United boss says that he decided to make these meetings public ‘because a lot of people want to know.’
Good to hear that things have been going on behind the scenes but as we all know, everything depends on what Mike Ashley decides to do, once Charnley has relayed Rafa’s wishes/demands.
“We have had conversations and we will have conversations next week.
“My representatives are talking with Lee Charnley but I want to concentrate on the game.
“I want to tell you now because a lot of people want to know.
“We will see how it goes on.
“Resolving it quickly is good for everybody.
“We’re a team who are where we are because we work really hard.
“We have to keep on working and be compact and organised.
“On stats we are one of the best teams on shots (in the top 10) and we haven’t conceded many – we have a good balance.
“It’s important to realise we were on a good run and winning games.
“Maybe we will change the team (for West Brom), maybe not, you will see tomorrow.
“I want to give a chance to everybody but also play a strong team on the pitch.
“I will try to find the balance.
“Because we were doing so well, people were thinking we would go to Everton – where they have spent so much money – and beat them easily. We knew it would be a tough game.
“West Brom are doing well. Watching their games, the clips that we have, they’re doing well.
“They’re dangerous and they are playing with confidence. It’s a massive game for them too.
“Darren Moore is doing a great job. We don’t relegate anyone – it depends on the points you have.
“We will do our job to get three points and I’m sure West Brom will do the same.
“He (Lascelles) is quite young to play so many games. Hopefully he can be here for 500 games or more.
“He has been a leader on and off the pitch. He has all the attributes to be even better.
(On England aspirations) “There are too many good players. It depends on the manager.
“I said before that Jonjo and Jamaal could be there.
“It would be a prize for all they have done (for Newcastle) but it’s up to the manager.
“It’s one game at a time. Winning one game, we could be in the top ten. The idea during the season has been one game at a time.
“We have a massive city behind us. We always have to do our best for this massive club.”
