A new study has shown how many minutes every Premier League club has played this season.
Sky Sports have analysed every club over all the competitions they have played in this season and totalled up the minutes played by all their squad.
At the very top of the 20 clubs you have Chelsea, their players completing 53,958 minutes between them, spread over the Premier League, domestic cup competitions and in Europe.
Not surprisingly the next five places are also taken by clubs that have played in Europe this season.
Arsenal finding the Europa League a significant extra, coming in second on 53,780 minutes.
Then you have Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham.
At the other end of the spectrum, you are looking for a team that is not in Europe.
One that didn’t get too far in either the FA Cup or League Cup either…
Step forward Newcastle United in 20th and bottom space on just 36,917 minutes – over 17,000 minutes less than Chelsea’s squad, who incidentally beat Newcastle in the fourth round on their way to the FA Cup final.
Newcastle of course also exited the League Cup at the very first opportunity, going out to Championship club Forest.
You will never know for sure, but when it comes to the later stages of the season, clubs that have played less minutes than their rivals must have at least some kind of advantage.
Also, not having FA Cup matches after January, surely didn’t do any harm to Newcastle when going on their run starting with beating Man Utd on 11 February, winning five and drawing one in a seven game spell.
Not advocating going out of the cups early on purpose of course, which idiot would want their own club (especially if they owned it…) to do that?
Hopefully Newcastle will have a decent Premier League season in 2018/19 and have plenty of added cup minutes on their total as well.
