No doubts as to the biggest Newcastle United problem this season.

Whilst Jamaal Lascelles has led the defence superbly at one end of the pitch, scoring goals has been a real issue.

With only 31 in 31 PL matches, there are only three other clubs in the top tier, outside of the relegation zone, who have scored less.

When your top scorer has five goals and there are only seven games left, it is a depressing statistic.

Dwight Gayle got two against Bournemouth on 24 February but you then have to go back to the 9 December 2018 when the number nine scored before that against Leicester.

That actually made it three goals in three weeks for Dwight Gayle, following up strikes against Man Utd and Chelsea, suggesting at the time that a main goalscorer might not be a problem.

However, it wasn’t to be, but you can’t only blame the centre-forward.

With four PL goals Joselu is the only other player to go beyond the three goal mark.

Could the answer(s) be on the club books but currently elsewhere?

Well, it is largely an unknown but at least we do have Newcastle players out on loan who are doing well in the second half of this season, albeit at a lower level.

Adam Armstrong is currently the leading ‘Newcastle’ goalscorer with 10 league goals. The 21 year old having now added nine with Blackburn in League One, to the single goal he got for Championship Bolton.

Then we have Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic tied on nine each.

Mitro has one for Newcastle and eight for Championship side Fulham, whilst Toney has played for two League One sides this season, scoring four for Wigan and five for current side Scunthorpe.

Midfielder Sean Longstaff up next, with a credible six for Blackpool, who are also League One.

Then we get to Dwight Gayle…

Obviously the big/only priority is scoring goals for Newcastle this season but it would still be great to see the likes of Mitro and Armstrong getting up towards 15 goals for the season. The pair have eight and nine goals respectively in their last eight matches so on that form who knows.

Newcastle players with most goals so far this season:

10 Adam Armstrong (1 Bolton and 9 Blackburn)

(7 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

9 Ivan Toney (4 Wigan 5 Scunthorpe)

(7 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

9 Aleksandar Mitrovic (1 Newcastle United and 8 Fulham)

(6 Championship matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

6 Sean Longstaff (6 Blackpool)

(6 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

5 Dwight Gayle

(7 Premier League matches remain)

4 Joselu

(7 Premier League matches remain)

I presume you meant to say ‘the only priority this season is staying up’ ?

  • Paul Patterson

So, the only player in the list that is a current first team regular, is Dwight Gayle?
Totally pointless listing of ‘our’ goal scorers. List the one’s CURRENTLY at the club and in with a chance of playing and you have an argument.

What article is this supposed to be ?
I thought they were releasing some sort of hyped up info..
John..can you please forget that u wrote this and read this piece once again?

So the question is – have the loanees found their level or is there still the potential for improvement? That’s the only way this conversation is relevant.
The way I see it, unless they get a chance we will never truly know.
Bit I can’t ever see any of the players on that list pulling on a toon shirt again. Including Gayle after May.
That’s the way it works. You get your shot then it’s time for someone else.
Ivan Toney is no more a Toon player than I am.
The plus side of this harsh reality is we might get Kenedy and Slimani…. If you’re playing and playing well and the fans like you…. and your contract is running down…you might be persuaded to take a pay cut? Probably not but maybe?

    Great. Shame it means nothing.

Has Mike Ashley bought out the Mag?

  • Toon

NUFC on a good run so The Mag begins to crack up! Scraping the barrel with this one though, If we don’t get beat today the writers will be suicidal! Makes a change from the contestant Ashley stories though

  • Cuh

On-loan strikers doing well is great news for all of us.

Too bad its not the case in the prem, where it really matters in the short term

  • Lord

Clear proof that Rafa should have been playing Adam and Ivan up front for us this season.
