Newcastle reject helps new club in remarkable turnaround as win league with a month remaining of season
Many Newcastle fans were surprised when Kevin Mbabu wasn’t given a chance by Rafa Benitez.
The young Swiss defender had impressed in a handful of appearances, including when playing against both Chelsea and Manchester City.
The drop into the Championship looked an ideal chance to give younger players a chance but instead Rafa went for experience.
Kevin Mbabu went back to Switzerland instead for a year on loan at Young Boys.
Last season saw FC Basel win their eighth league title in a row, Young Boys ending the season as distant runners up, 17 points adrift.
However, with a month of the season still remaining, Kevin Mbabu and Young Boys won the title on Saturday, thanks to a 2-1 win over Luzern.

FC Basel still have five games left to play but are 16 points behind, meaning the title celebrations started early for the former Newcastle player.
Kevin Mbabu made a permanent move to Young Boys last summer for a nominal fee and has played 30 of the 32 league matches so far.
Having turned 23 this month, the pacey full-back now has a league winners medal and can look forward to Champions League football next season.
That is some turnaround, trailing by 17 points last season to FC Basel and now dominating them so much, that the title comes with their rivals still having those five games to play.
Good luck to Kevin Mbabu next season, he always came across as a canny lad and released this personal statement when signing on a permanent deal at Young Boys.
