Why Newcastle fans should enjoy the end to this season as much as any other

I wrote at the start of the season, and at Christmas time, that I would snap your hand off for 17th place at those given points, as many Newcastle fans would have done. That remark was always followed by, “what I want more than anything is to be able to go into the last few games of the season with absolutely nothing to play for, no relegation battle.”

Anyway, here we are and it feels absolutely brilliant.

For the first time in a good few years it is going to be a relaxing end to the season. Of course, Newcastle can push for 8th place and extra few million quid to go into Ashley’s kitty but it doesn’t really matter does it?

I know some people will argue otherwise, in relation to prize money, or being able to attract players in the summer, but I think that the PL has become a league in which it doesn’t really matter so much if you finish anywhere between 8th and 17th.

I wasn’t at the game on Sunday, I made the decision to go to the Old Firm instead. Usually, if I can’t make a game, I will be checking twitter or the football score app every two minutes to see how we are getting on.

When I found out we had gone 1-0 down, I glanced at my Dad and we both shrugged our shoulders ‘oh well’.

Normally going a goal down at this stage of the season in previous years has meant something… one step closer to relegation, promotion, will we win the league, it was only six years ago that a defeat at Wigan meant we probably wouldn’t get Champions League football.

The point being, and it sounds strange to say it, that when I found out we had gone a goal down it was a  brilliant feeling to not really have to care about it. When was the last time we were in a position like this?

Newcastle fans have been through their fair share down the years, including in the past decade under Mike Ashley. If ever a fan base deserved five games off, to just go and enjoy the rest of the season, it would be us. I will enjoy watching the last five games just as much as any other games.

The positivity around the team is as high as it has been for a while, I would even put it on a pedestal with the team that finished 5th.

So, go to the remaining games, sing your heart out, get behind the team. It doesn’t matter if someone plays rubbish, or misses a sitter, it doesn’t matter if we go 1-0 down, or end up getting beat.

This is a team who you know at the very least, are trying their best for a manager that we can all trust.

Thanks Rafa!
