Newcastle 2 Arsenal 1  – Sunday 15 April 1.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle coming back from a goal down to win 2-1.

Islam Slimani coming off the bench to set up Matt Ritchie for the winner.

Paul Patterson:

“Smiles, songs, sunshine and celebrations.

“S……..d going down and the mags are staying up..”

Jamie Smith:

“Brilliant!

“Coming from behind, beating Arsenal for the first time in 13 years (at home for the pedants) and surely cementing our PL status.

“An incredible run continues in which every player has played a full part, Perez and Diame starred again today as they look like different players to their former laborious selves.

“The feel good factor is amazing, everything is going so well and there’s real potential to kick on from here.

“Whether or not the people with decision making potential see it like that is a very different matter of course.

“Also, got to keep Kenedy, please.”

Kevin Christie:

“Great win!

“One we could all see coming given our great recent form and Arsenal’s away woes this season, so was half-expecting us to slip up.

“To win having gone a goal down was particularly impressive.

“Actually thought we were very wasteful on the break today – Gayle and Perez constantly ran into trouble and struggled to find a killer pass, while Kenedy was particularly frustrating as an attacking outlet but did put in a good defensive shift.

“Slimani’s 30 minute cameo was very promising and Diame put in another mammoth performance.

“Lascelles and Co were very solid at the back too. So many reasons to be cheerful!

“Top 10 is now a realistic possibility.

“A massive summer ahead for NUFC. In Rafa we trust! :-)”

Nat Seaton:

“We owed them that result!!

“Absolutely brilliant!!

“Great ‘battling’ team performance with two great goals.

“Oh, did I mention we’ve got 41 POINTS!!!”

Ben Cooper:

“An entertaining game which Arsenal reserves dominated early on in both halves.

“The longer those halves went on, the stronger we got and at 2-1 we were never in any serious danger as Arsenal lacked any real threat.

“Not to say it wasn’t hard fought tho and another big pat on the back for a team that gives everything.

“The defence and midfield two were massive, Kenedy ran them ragged and a big shout to Perez and Ritchie who have come good when it really mattered.

“Being safe is a great feeling!”

David Punton:

“What a fantastic end to the season this is turning into!

“Any win against the Gooners is to be greatly welcomed and cherished given their record up here. To be two points off eighth place is astonishing.

“Today’s win, achieved with 28% possession of the ball, was all about the tactical genius in our dugout.

“Rafa has delivered when it counted, aided and abetted by the outstanding effort and commitment of every single player at the club.

“Perez has scored a lovely near post equaliser after a slick move before Ritchie went through for 2-1 after the break.

“We are now safe from relegation, looking up the table and the sun is shining.

“Howay the lads!”

Paul Lyon:

RAFA’S MAGS, STAYING UP!!

“Cannot fault the lads for their effort & commitment all season but now we’re showing signs of quality & experience alongside that.

“Brilliant.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“An achievement that is hugely underrated, by securing safety with this squad, is finally secured.

“Diame, Ritchie and Gayle were superb today and Slimani looks a player.

“Savour tonight and savour the safety that looked so far off in December.

“Hats off to Rafa, now give that man a new contract before it’s too late.”

George Stainsby:

“It’s not just the points.

“It’s not just Perez and Richie scoring again.

“It’s coming back against one of the big lads.

“Not having a panic. Taking responsibility.

“For a team who some say, or said, are not a Premier League team, well… we’re a team who play as a unit.

“A couple of prolific goal scorers with our work ethic and we could do even better!

“Bring it on.”

Jamie Swan:

“So proud of this team of players. Delighted for every single one of them.

“Delighted for the manager and absolutely delighted for the fans.

“A top half finish is definitely up for grabs and the form we are in, would take a brave man to back against us.

“Don’t think it was our best performance today, a little bit sloppy at times in possession, but when we did have the ball we offered a threat against a soft Arsenal team and scored two cracking team goals.

“As always, they worked their pods off and defended as an eleven again.

“No more so than the Man Mountain Mo Diame. Take a bow mate, hats off to you.

Super Sunday!”

Perez goal was mint, but Slimani should have been on for the 1st 30mins not the last, such was his impact. He will bury Everton given the chance.

    • pedrodelgardo

He looks like a defenders nightmare, good in the air, likes to fight and run seems unselfish aswell.

      • Cockneytrev

Agree he looks a handful , if he can stay injury free….

      • Dave Mitchison

Hate to bring this up but there is a striker at Fulham at the moment doing all of those things aswell. Cant seem to remember his name. Young lad, bags of potential so they say and matured this season. Think it begins with M or something.

  • TheFatController

Aubameyang wishing he had signed for us now ….!

    • pedrodelgardo

Heaton Stan put in a bid.

      • molend

Divvent ye knock Heaton Stan. Me Uncle Walter and Aunt Meg used to live in Beanley Place, so Aa was a bit of an afficionado (can I say that?)

    • Albert Stubbins

Was he playing today? Did nowt.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Really looking forward to the game at Everton. Which isn’t something I’ve said in a long long time.

  • Cockneytrev

Rafa Benitez, has turned a rag tag squad of players into a solid unit, this is probably the best organised Newcastle team I’ve seen in over 50 years of watching them,
we went 1-0 down and I still felt like we would come back, it’s been a long time since I’ve felt like that, especially against one of the elite premier teams,,,

    • Leazes.

      Yes it’s called a ‘bus’…. 28% possession.

      • pedrodelgardo

In the second half they had the ball and we had the threat, I like it that way round.

      • Cockneytrev

Inter Milan didn this against Barcelona and it was called genius management by mourhino,,,he had a massive quality squad and went on and won the European cup,, we have the worst squad since the early 90s and he has kept us up,, I don’t know what else you expect from him,, you can call it parking the bus,, I call it beating one of the premiers elite clubs with a championship squad,,,,

      • Lakeland Mag

It’s also called three points and probably guaranteed safety, if you’re interested ?

      • wheyayeman

I bet those Arsenal fans were celebrating their 72% possession all the way back to London!

  • Leazes.

…..and they say United fans don’t have a grip on reality, not one of them can put the game into context, no wonder we still have Ashley here when the biggest problem is morons who comment on United are emotionally psychotic yo-yos or drunk or both!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

you mean half the Arsenal first 11 back in London recovering from Thursdays match

      • Leazes.

West Brom have taken the lead…. it doesn’t mean much to either team. The problem we have at our club is that the pundits tend to get ahead of the game…. they are part of the problem at our club!

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

very true, i watching the Man U game

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

another thank you to Leazes for reminding us yet again why we should feel terrible about winning. Lacazette and Aubameyang cost more than our entire starting 11 (and then some) so the 3 points are still plenty worth celebrating.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Funny that MMM always turns up to respond in deference to Leazes’ within the time it takes to logged off and log in under another nom de plume

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Mike Ashley quote on chairmen of clubs below us who spent zillions in January
    MUGS,
i did the whole season on 11 mill
    😂😂😂

    • pedrodelgardo

He recognised Rafa’s value and most importantly – acted. As long as he goes everyone wins.

  • Thefootballerwhocouldfly

    Fantastic result.
All we need now is Ashely to invest or sell……

  • molend

Hate to say I told you so, mes enfants, but Aa telt yiz, Aa did. Three weeks ago I predicted six points from Leicester and Arsenal. The cry goes up across Northumberland: ‘Molend is nothing if not perspicacious’ (or, depending on the affluence of incohol ‘prescient’). And I hope at least some of you will agree with what I’ve been saying for ages: if it’s a choice between spending on a coach or a player, spend it on the best coach you can afford. Now, Lady Molend has just gracioously given her consent to a celebratory tincture, so good neet, the lorraye.

  • Andy Mac

Has Mo Diame been eating three Weetabix or an apple a day ? Maybe he’s using performance enhancing inhalers, taking steroids or perhaps he’s been drinking the blood of virgins ?

Whatever it is, Id like some too 🤔

  • david

Under previous managers our team lacked any heart and determination even if the players had a higher skill level but give me these lads any day. Every game this season even when its gone wrong have always gave 100% effort… i can ask for no more than that so very proud of everyone of them. Not only have they gave everything each and every game so many of them have progressed as individuals. Diame Perez Dummett even Shelvey and more established players. The team is in grrst hands we have the manager the coaching staff a strong base to build a real good team and the fans… we just need mr ashley to back the manager or let someone who will take over and newcastle could explode back onto the scene in a big way i can feel it
