Newcastle 0 West Brom 1  – Saturday 28 April 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going down to a shock defeat to bottom of the table West Brom.

A first half winner and Newcastle never really looking likely to come back into it, certainly in the second half when NUFC were shocking.

Jamie Smith:

“Meh.

“Took my daughter to her first game today and it was a particularly flat one to introduce her to her lifetime of football disappointment.

“WBA fighting for their unlikely survival versus a Magpies team that seem on the beach.

“So little incident in the game I’m gonna struggle for what to put in the match report.

“Joselu’s miss at the end can’t have been as bad as it looked from my seat because a professional striker wouldn’t miss a chance like that…”

Nat Seaton:

“A really disappointing well below par performance against a poor team heading to the Championship, in front of yet another full house.

“I thought our passing on Monday night was poor but today it was worse.

“We found even the basics difficult today.

“On today’s showing I’m just grateful that we’re already safe.

“Get the feeling players think job done…”

Ben Cooper:

“A bit of end of season drivel to remind us that if football is about momentum then we lost ours after beating Arsenal and staying up.

“With the full backs having an off day, Shelvey and Diame giving the ball away every time they got it and all of our attacking players being as bad as I can remember seeing them, it is no surprise we lost.

“We should have scored tho, Kenedy and Joselu both missed great chances. That might be the last one Joselu gets.”

David Punton:

“It was hard to tell which side was set for relegation to the Championship!

“Yep, that was a horror show from Newcastle United today.

“Toothless, laboured, and second best all over the pitch.

“With the pressure off, surely the players had to go out and turn the screw on West Brom?

“The performance showcased why this side still needs a major summer overhaul if this season of survival is to be built on properly.

“And it is a good job all of the hard work has already been done in terms of securing survival.

“This group of players are a great bunch, so to suggest they’re already on the beach may sound harsh. It’s been a phenomenal effort by everyone when the season hit the crunch phase.

“But today was unprofessional, and absolutely dire to watch. Must do better or a top ten finish will be spurned.”

Paul Lyon:

“Played like a team that had nowt to play for, target achieved weeks ago foot off the gas.

“I think that mentality crept into sections of our crowd today too, sunderland songs from the off, prefer if we saved them until we’re winning, personally.

“Hard to be too critical in the context of the season though the lads have performed miracles at times but the season is in danger of petering out.

“Typical mid-table stuff which we would’ve been happy to take not so long ago.”

Jamie Swan:

“Eyes off the prize, heads on the beach. Maybe.

“Not great and another nil one defeat, this time to the bottom club.

“Doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it does mean we have failed to beat the baggies this season and in total lost one-nil NINE times and failed to score in a premier league game THIRTEEN times.

“The heady scent of survival and a top half finish has skewed a few eyes of fans too, not just players. The last seven days are a swift kick to the knackers to clear the mind.

“A full summer to get some goals in this team.

“Hopefully it’ll be Rafa with the shopping list and hopefully he will not be dealing in magic beans and bags of salt.

“I don’t think it will be Slimani leading the charge this season or next.”

Toon Bano:

“Very poor result.

“Are we now going to do our best to throw away a top 10 finish?!!!”

Paul Patterson:

“Are we a side made up of mostly Championship players?

“Today was Exhibit A.”
