Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Saturday’s match at St James Park.
West Brom have the worst home record in the Premier League and on their travels, only Stoke have picked up fewer points.
Amazing to think now but the Baggies actually started the season with consecutive victories.
They beat Bournemouth at home and then Burnley away, before then going on to win only two of their next 33 Premier League matches.
A win came at home to Brighton in January, the only PL victory under Alan Pardew, but they had to wait until the 34th game of the season, their 17th away match, before they won on their travels again.
As Michael Owen points out, that remarkable win came at Old Trafford and was then followed by an impressive comeback at home to draw 2-2 with Liverpool, that makes it five points from three games under caretaker Darren Moore.
Those five points have meant that West Brom aren’t quite done yet but anything but a win is the only thing that could potentially keep their season still breathing for another week.
Michael Owen thinks that despite Newcastle losing at Everton and not being at their best, Rafa’s team will make it five wins in six games and condemn the Baggies to the Championship.
Nobody has scored less than West Brom’s nine away goals (in 17 matches) but actually only six clubs have conceded fewer in away games than the 25 West Brom have leaked. Quite amazing but even Liverpool in third have conceded more than West Brom away from home.
So with Saturday’s visitors only conceding on average a goal and a half every away match, Newcastle may have to be patient in breaking them down, with thoughts of a high scoring game unlikely. West Brom’s away games averaging exactly two goals in total in each match.
Before Monday night, Newcastle had failed to score in only one PL match in 2018 and that was at Liverpool, so we should have every hope of seeing Rafa’s players keeping a clean sheet and scoring at least one. A win would be great but hopefully we can get the lead and then add a couple more for entertainment’s sake.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Newcastle were not at their best at Goodison earlier in the week.
“But get a confident vote to bounce back despite the fact that Darren Moore’s Albion have picked up four points from their last two games against Manchester United and Liverpool.
“It is likely to be a case of too little too late, however.
“West Brom need to pick up maximum points at St James Park to have any chance of an unlikely Great Escape.
“The Baggies have only kept one clean sheet in their last 24 visits to St James Park, however.
“I think this will be the game that confirms the Baggies will be playing Championship football next term.
“Tip is Newcastle to win.”
