This Newcastle United squad is performing at the moment, as a team that is greater than its parts.

The commitment and passion for the club, fans and manager is obvious.

However, it is giving a lie to the idea that local homegrown players are essential to a club’s success.

Of the 24 man Newcastle United squad currently at Rafa Benitez’ disposal, only Paul Dummett is homegrown.

Born and bred a Newcastle fan and now playing for ‘his club’.

As you can see below, Jamaal Lascelles was born the next closest to Newcastle and that was 142 miles away in Derby!

Interesting to analyse the squad and 10 of them were born in England, with actually a very surprising reliance on players from London, you know, those people we are all supposed to hate. If you include Chelmsford-born Isaac Hayden, then six of the NUFC squad hail from the capital.

As for our overseas stars, we have three born in France and four in Spain (incl Tenerife born Ayoze Perez).

When it comes to who was born furthest away from St James Park, Kenedy comfortably wins that one, some 5,938 miles away in Brazil.

Stats put together by The Times of how far away from Newcastle each member of the squad was born (number of miles as the crow flies – not by road):

0 Paul Dummett (Newcastle Upon Tyne)

142 Jamaal Lascelles (Derby)

102 Karl Darlow (Northampton – A mistake by The Times, it is 192 not 102)

240 Isaac Hayden (Chelmsford)

241 Ciaran Clark (Harrow, London)

243 Jacob Murphy (Wembley, London)

244 Dwight Gayle (Walthamstow, London)

247 Jonjo Shelvey (Romford, London)

251 Rob Elliot (Greenwich, London)

290 Matt Ritchie (Gosport)

456 Massadio Haidara (Trappes, France)

456 Florian Lejeune (Paris, France)

462 Mohamed Diame (Creteil, France)

629 Joselu (Stuttgart, Germany)

842 Mikel Merino (Pamplona, Spain)

948 Martin Dubravka (Zilina, Slovakia)

1,012 Javier Manquillo (Madrid, Spain)

1,280 Islam Slimani (Algiers, Algeria)

1,283 Jesus Gamez (Fuengirola, Spain)

1,974 Ayoze Perez (Tenerife)

3,405 Christian Atsu (Ada Foah, Ghana)

4,223 Chancel Mbemba (Kinshasa, DR Congo)

4,563 DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle, USA)

5,938 Kenedy (Santa Rito do Sapucai, Brazil)

  • mentalman

we’ve probably got more british players in the team than we have had in a long time

    • Rich Lawson

Now that would be a graph for Leazes ?

  • Paul Patterson

    Hardly that relevant.
I’d love to say we have x amount of local lads in the side, but for every honest player like steady eddie Paul Dummett, we get a Jack Colback, for every Andy Carroll, we get a Michael Chopra . .

    • mentalman

Jack will be back next season and it’ll be like a new signing

  • Leazes.

I love this sort of thing but you really need a graph…. come on its easy!

    • Wor Lass

Some sort of radial graph with SJP at the centre and lines radiating out showing distance and direction.

      • Leazes.

Thats a map really isnt it?

        • Wor Lass

It could be drawn ON a map. I`d call it a chart rather than a graph, I suppose.

  • Rabid Dog

The headline made me smile. Imagining Dummies mam giving birth in the bogs at St. James….. that commitment

    • gallowgate26

It’s kind of true if he was, like myself and no doubt many others, born in the RVI. It’s spitting distance away basically.

  • Dive

I am glad to declare I was born in the borough of Romford, Essex, which puts me In with Jonjo Selvey – a player I greatly admire- problem being, I came into the world in Sept 1938 – some years earlier than the Swansea miracle-man.

  • Dive

Just to explain, I became a Magpie in 1946 (Oct 26th) after seeing how NUFC put 13 past Newport County. Breathtaking for an 8-yr-old lad.

    • Leazes.

      Glory Hunter!

  • GC

What a bizarre article. Someone has far too much time on their hands. I’d bet that if he were to run those stats for every Prem club then it would be similar. (Please don’t, no one is interested)

  • GC

β€œ0 Paul Dummett” ?? I had no idea that he was born in the centre circle
