Jamaal Lascelles gives latest rousing interview “Every single game should be a cup final, that is my mentality”

Jamaal Lascelles seems to be impressing everybody, apart from Gareth Southgate that is.

Rafa Benitez counts on him, the Newcastle fans love him, Chelsea allegedly want to buy him.

Even Paul Merson was giving the Newcastle Captain rave reviews at the weekend.

After covering the Newcastle win on Sky Sports, Merson said:

“I like the centre-half, Lascelles.

“He’s a good player for me.

“For me, I think he goes somewhere and plays for a big team.

“I really do like him. He got a silly booking [after 10 minutes] but after that he was absolutely outstanding throughout the game.

Little wonder the headlines Jamaal Lascelles is making when you consider these facts:

Lascelles has now started 25 Premier League games this season and with him in the side they have conceded only 23 goals, in the 6 matches he didn’t start – Newcastle conceded 17 goals.

Newcastle have picked up 34 of their 35 points when the captain has started.

Whilst in the 25 matches, there have been 8 clean sheets and 12 times conceded just once. So only on four occasions has a Lascelles Newcastle team conceded two goals and only one it was three – away at Man City.

Of course it isn’t just his play on the pitch, or even his leadership qualities on the pitch as well, because off the pitch we once again have somebody who is worthy of the title of captain. Following the embarrassing years after Mike Ashley [allegedly] told Pardew to give the job to Coloccini, who refused to do interviews, amongst other failures as a leader.

Speaking after this latest victory against Huddersfield, Lascelles once again is leading from the front.

Jamaal Lascelles:

“A massive win, I thought the break might affect us but it didn’t. We were on the front foot from the start.

“I thought it could have been four or five and they didn’t really threaten us.

“We kept our patience and the goal eventually came.

“I’m really pleased with the boys.

“Huddersfield came for a draw but we wanted nothing less than three points.

“We were hungry, passionate…that has led us to creep up the table a little further.

“Martin has been fantastic in goal, the back four have been solid, the two centre-mids have really stepped up – Jonjo and Mo, they are pretty much running the games for us now.

“Nice to get Slimani on the pitch, he was a handful, probably his presence in the box created room for Ayoze [to score the winner].

“I don’t think there is any time to relax.

“Even if we were already safe I would still want to win every single game we play.

“Every single game should be a cup final, that is my mentality.’
