Everton 1 Newcastle 0 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Monday’s defeat
Everton 1 Newcastle 0 – Monday 23 April 8pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.
Newcastle going down to a 1-0 defeat in a dreadful game, Everton scoring with their only effort on target.
Theo Walcott getting the only goal of the game thanks to some poor Newcastle defending.
“Ref gave us nowt.
“Forget fat Sam, that was a game against ringers and former stars.
“We are better positioned as a club.”
“Absolute s… show of a non-game.
“If anyone who didn’t support either team sat through the 90 minutes on sky they want their head looked at.
“9th v 10th was fairly unimportant in the context of things of course, but it always hurts to lose to Allardyce and his non-football, especially as the goal was classic Sam.
“Belted high into the box and hope enough confusion reigns that one of your blokes gets on the end of it.
“To be fair, at least they had that one meaningful shot on target, whereas they could have stuck a sack of taties in goal for all we came close to scoring.
“If all football was like this I honestly wouldn’t like football.”
“Very niggly, bitty match – so many slips, bounces, poor touches and misplaced passes.
“Disappointing end to our good run as at least a point was there for the taking.
“Our limitations were obvious tonight with Perez and Gayle yet again displaying the lack of cutting edge that has cost us all season. Unfortunately, Slimani was very rusty too.
“Shelvey just couldn’t get into the game and Kenedy just didn’t get the rub of the green – he seemed our biggest threat all night.
“All in all, a damp squib but still lots of points left to play for.
“Fingers crossed we can secure a Top 10 finish to give us momentum going into the summer.”
“The long wait goes on to put one over Sam Allardyce.
“That was a tight game and we probably should be heading back up from Merseyside with a point.
“They have managed to score with their only shot on target, so the rub of the green wasn’t quite there for us as the winning run came to an end.
“There were a few decent performances out there tonight, notably Diamé, but we couldn’t stick the ball away after a forgettable first half.
“A solid penalty shout waved away by our old mate Bobby Madley, proof that it wasn’t our night. He had to give that, surely?
“It was a Rafa’s 100th game as NUFC manager and we have come a long way in that time. Under previous managerial regimes we’d have been properly rolled over on this ground.
“That we’re safe from the drop with games to spare is not to be sniffed at and we can go again at the weekend against West Brom, hopefully with a bit more sharpness and cohesion.
“PS – Jordan Pickford’s a melt.”
“By no means a classic, what were Sky thinking picking this one?
“Shame we couldn’t make more of our opportunities when they arose.
“Our fans noisy throughout, as the home fans had a snooze.
“At least we’ve kept Big Sham away from his latest compensation cheque for another week, scant consolation.
“The end of a decent run, we aim to start another on Saturday.”
“The game was almost a rerun of the Burnley and Brighton away defeats.
“Tight games, where at times we look fairly decent before conceding an uncharacteristically soft goal.
“Shame we didn’t force the issue more and annoying that fat sam’s awful football has won the day, but I am trying not to let it spoil the joy of the past few weeks that much.”
“Proper minging Allardyce fest.
“Way below recent standards and end up with a double defeat to a bang average team.
“Looked ok first half and had Ayoze slipped in Slimani it could have been different. Bobby the nob Madley couldnt spot a cannonball in his kegs. No surprise.
“Hey ho, things could be worse. At least when you wake in the morning you won’t be a Mackem or in League one.
“Count your blessings that you are one of God’s people. TOON TOON.”
“Never thought I’d be going to Goodison with nothing to play for, so I would have taken that weeks ago, but I could have done without coming!
“Poor game, not sure we have passed the ball as badly as we did tonight all season.
“Disappointed that Rafa didn’t go for it now that we are safe, I’d have loved to have denied Fat Sam the satisfaction of beating us (again!).”
“Disappointing to lose the end of season slog but I accept that the players did their best. The quality of the last few games deserted them but they have exceeded my expectations this year.
“Everton were equally average but capitalised on one of a few defensive mistakes we made while we were unable to capitalise on theirs.
“Both teams will have to spend proper money to really move on from where they are now.
“You can see either team finishing 7th next season. Without £100million to spend, neither team has any chance of 6th.
“An extra word for the ref.
“I like a ref who doesn’t give a free kick every time a player falls over and is happy to explain his decisions to the players.
“He will have a couple to explain tonight to Rafa tho.
“His only reasonable explanation would be “I’m giving you nowt from the start.”
