Danny Murphy has no doubts whatsoever that one Newcastle player should be on the plane to Russia.

Whilst Gareth Southgate has failed to call up any Newcastle player in his time as England manager, Murphy believes that it will be a massive oversight if he fails to pick Jonjo Shelvey in his final 23 man squad this summer.

After yet another excellent Shelvey performance as Newcastle won their third home match in a row against Huddersfield, Murphy was asked if the NUFC midfielder offers something ‘a little bit different’.

Danny Murphy agreed ‘100%’ and said that whilst he wouldn’t necessarily see the former Liverpool and Swansea player as a sure starter, he does think that he would be invaluable to come on when England are struggling to break down opposition.

The Match of The Day pundit saying Jonjo Shelvey is ‘the best passer’ England have got and that ‘against packed defences’, the midfielder is the one who could make a difference.

Having been ignored for the 27 man England squad in March, as was Jamaal Lascelles.

We are now left with a position whereby neither of them look to have any chance of a call-up and very likely looking at the same old same old central midfielders, where England have any number who Southgate can select who do the basics very well maybe – but who don’t offer something a little bit special/different like Shelvey could potentially do.

Dan Walker:

‘Could you make an argument that Jonjo Shelvey, yes he has negatives to his game, but he offers Gareth Southgate something a little bit different as an England Manager?’

Danny Murphy:

“I think in terms of opening up a packed defence, Jonjo Shelvey is the best passer we have got.

“I understand the other side of it, discipline or defensive responsibilities, but when you look at the England squad and players in his position…

“Maybe not to start – but I would take him [to Russia}.

“Because I think against packed defences Jonjo Shelvey is the one who can do that.”

He is the best passer of a ball at any distance in the premier league & can drop it on a 5p piece, yesterday was a fine example of his skills.

While that clown Southgate is in charge neither Lascelles or Shelvey will get near an England team when wearing a Black and White shirt. The F.As Yes Man has had a major problem with all thing NUFC since his days both playing and managing the Smoggies.
However if they played for say Spurs or West Ham I would guarantee they would both make the 23

Southgate little more than a ‘safe pair of hands’. After the farce of Buffaloheadgate the FA always going to go for the unimaginative. Got to admit struggling to give a flying Hoss about England

I reckon Shelvey isn’t in Southgate’s squads because of his propensity to get red cards. But Lascelles’ omission is baffling; he doesn’t just look like an England player, he looks like an England captain.

    • Paul Smith

I think the fact he was found guilty of racially abusing an opposing player last season is part of it.

  • Rob Brown

Interesting that Murphy is pushing for an England start while
Lee Ryder gave him the second lowest rating in the team.

Just goes to show, somebody has no idea what they’re talking about.

Imagine the likes of vardy, sterling and rashford running on to shelveys passes

The love in with Jack Wilshire will mean they’ll never be a place for jonjo. A limping on crutches wilshire will always be selected over anyone, such is the medias love affair with this overrated londoner playing for the medias favourite london club, arssenull

I’ve got a 20 quid bet with a mate that Shelvey would go and Wilshere wouldn’t. Looks like I’m paying out.

  • Paul Smith

I think 1 of the main reasons he wont be considered is that he was found guilty of racially abusing a player last season.
