Change the label…This Newcastle United team is most definitely Premier League
It has been stated time after time, in the local and national media and in popular folk wisdom, that Newcastle United are a Championship team, playing in the Premier League.
I want to put that to bed right now, and in hindsight, I wish I had done it earlier. Given that we are now mid-table and have been on a decent run since the turn of the year, it’s suffice to say that the team are of EPL standard.
The team have improved with the new signings but so have a substantial majority of the players improved on a personal level.
Lascelles has been magnificent this season, and if Dummett had not been injured early on, then I’m convinced our goal difference would have been even better.
Ritchie has scored a couple of very important and match winning goals and I’m convinced there is still time for Shelvey to make the England World Cup Squad.
Mo Diame has been nothing short of sensational this year, so what justification is there to label him a Championship player?
Even Perez has joined in with seven goals (all competitions) this season, and apart from a few loose touches, he has been in good form and in my opinion is definitely Premier League standard.
So, let us bury this ‘Championship Team’ label once and for all.
Yes, we had a tricky start, but we have learned under Rafa the Gaffa, and pulled away from the danger zone with time to spare.
This is Newcastle United, an EPL standard team awash with skill, guts, determination, togetherness, now is the time to finally stop this unfair labelling once and for all.
