Alan Shearer loving what he saw on Saturday afternoon at St James Park – ‘Off the sofa 8 times’

Alan Shearer can see things really coming together at Newcastle United.

In 2018, there have been 10 Premier League matches and Newcastle have only lost to Man City and Liverpool, with four wins and four draws in the other eight games.

The recent upturn has seen many good performances but Shearer believes it is obvious what the biggest difference and driving force is.

Against Huddersfield, Newcastle should have had the game won by half-time but didn’t take their chances.

However, as Alan Shearer says, ‘Newcastle dominated, bossed the midfield’, with Diame and especially Shelvey continuing to drive the team forward and get their eventual fully deserved reward of three points.

Always a great combination, a big Newcastle win and Shearer on Match of The Day afterwards.

Presenter Dan Walker revealed that when they were watching the game, Alan Shearer was ‘up eight times from the sofa’ and the Newcastle legend and fan had he and Danny Murphy ‘nervous for you just watching it’.

As for man of the match, clearly the former number nine had no doubts…”Quicker, sharper, brighter than anybody else on the pitch, was Jonjo Shelvey.”

Dan Walker:

“You don’t know this Alan but we were counting and you were up eight times from the sofa watching this one, we were a bit nervous for you just watching it.

“But Rafa Benitez’ midfield did the business for him today.”

Alan Shearer:

“There were plenty of good performances out there, I thought Paul Dummett had a very good game.

“But in midfield was where the game was won and lost, I thought Newcastle dominated, they bossed the midfield, Shelvey and Diame.

“Right from the kick-off, showing their intent, they worked so well as a partnership, Diame has been in excellent form, as has Shelvey.

“Quicker, sharper, brighter than anybody else on the pitch, was Jonjo Shelvey.

“Gets the free-kick, puts it down, foot on the ball, there you go, weight of pass [perfectly into Gayle’s path but lifting it over the keeper, went just wide].

“I thought his passing again today was superb, because if you give him time on the ball to pick his head up, which Huddersfield did today, then he will hurt you with his passing, he can put those slide rule passes in.

“They kept everything moving in the midfield because Huddersfield did try and frustrate, try to sit.

“I thought Newcastle were superb, they dominated that midfield and it was a very very well deserved and big three points for Newcastle.”
