Mauricio Pellegrino couldn’t believe what he was watching at St James Park.

The Southampton boss seeing his team lose 3-0 and sink deeper into relegation trouble.

It took less than two minutes for the first of three Newcastle goals and the visiting boss felt it had a ‘massive impact on my players’.

Mauricio Pellegrino has apologised to the Southampton fans for the performance.

Rafa’s former assistant says that he has not ‘seen one game this season like this at all’.

He accused his players of showing no spirit and declared ‘The worst thing was the attitude’.

One thing you can certainly say about Newcastle United this season, is that win, lose or draw, the team are certainly playing for Rafa Benitez.

Mauricio Pellegrino:

“The first goal in the first minute had a massive impact on my players.

“From this moment we could not react, the spirit of the team was really poor.

“Without spirit, without character, we can play badly and we can have a difficult day.

“We have to show the spirit and that’s the biggest problem today…I have not seen one game this season like this at all.

“When you do not play a good game, you have to show you are on the pitch, even running, even fighting, even playing football, and do the best we can.

“The worst thing was the attitude.

“We are in this position for a good reason, but we still have eight games and we are still alive.

“We have to say sorry to the fans.

“We did not represent the club with the values that the club has got.”

To be fair they controlled possession and we caught them on the break but we could have had five or six. Win the next home game against Huddersfield and with seven games left we should be well safe.

We a allowed them possession of the ball but they were clueless. I might be wrong but can’t see any way they will get 5 more points than us over the rest of the season

    • pedrodelgardo

We allowed them to have the ball but controlled the space partly because we know they are not very good and we wanted them to come up the pitch, Rafa’s basic plan – all the dangerous posession is in their half.

They have to be one of the worst sides to play in the premiership… totally void of belief and desire … we dropped off them allowing them possession and that actually played into our hands … they didn’t have a clue what to do with the ball and after quickly running out of ideas allowed us to walk through them on the counter attack.. that is a pale imitation of the Southampton team from last season, but I’ll not complain.

Rafa`s negative tactics worked out OK, then?
