Paul Merson gives a strange discussion ahead of Newcastle v Huddersfield

Time once again for Paul Merson to give his forecast on Newcastle United’s next game.

Ahead of the sold out Newcastle v Huddersfield match, the Sky Sports pundit has been having a rambling discussion with himself about the game.

The strangest part is that apart from saying Newcastle are going to win, his entire discussion is about why Huddersfield are going to lose.

Yes, the visitors haven’t had a great March so far with one point from three games, but to put it into context, Huddersfield won their previous two matches, scoring six goals in the process.

Winning at West Brom and thrashing Bournemouth 4-1 at home, Huddersfield then lost predictably at Tottenham (2-0), had a goalless draw at home to Swansea, before a really poor result at home to Palace, losing 2-0.

However, as Newcastle fans know, the clubs that are struggling are very much of a muchness and capable of beating each other.

Indeed, Palace were better than Newcastle in both the home and away games, yet Rafa’s players somehow came out of them with four points.

A 1-0 win for Huddersfield over Newcastle back in August shows there is no room for complacency and NUFC have to be right at it to win.

Paul Merson goes with a 2-0 Newcastle win and hopefully the visitors will ‘melt’ as they did against Palace, as described by Merson.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“I think Huddersfield melted last time out against Crystal Palace.

“They literally bottled it…

“They were poor, they didn’t have a shot, they didn’t really have a go at Crystal Palace, and it got the better of them in a big football match.

“I think Newcastle at home will have too much for Huddersfield.

“They [Huddersfield] never, ever looked like threatening to score against Crystal Palace and I watched them against Swansea the week before that and they played against 10 men for 79 minutes – more than that with injury time – and they never really looked like scoring there.

“There was one great save the goalkeeper made and Tom Ince hit the outside of the post.

David Wagner should have changed it quicker and put the big centre-forward on.

“I worry for Huddersfield now, this game is a big game and I see Newcastle winning.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Huddersfield 0.”
