Newcastle 3 Southampton 0 – Match ratings of all NUFC players
Newcastle 3 Southampton 0 – Saturday 10 March 2018 3pm
We asked Jonathan Drape-Comyn to give us his match ratings after today’s game.
A resounding 3-0 victory and some excellent write-ups on the players who performed today.
Dubravka 7 – Another solid display. Commanded his box very well, and made little fuss of the few saves that he had to make in the second half.
Looks like he has improved this side massively. Although, it’s safe to say his distribution was a little all over the place today.
Yedlin 8 – I am a massive fan of Yedlin. I think both of our full backs complement each other very well, especially at home, with Yedlin bombing forward and Dummett being more conservative and tucking in.
Did well defensively today and was always there to get beyond Ritchie and offer an extra option going forward.
Lascelles 9 – A rock solid performance again from the captain. He made it look easy today.
By far our most important player at the moment, if he maintains the standards as to what they are currently, then there’s no doubt that we’ll stay up.
Lejeune 8 – Making big strides in his performances as of late. Looked good alongside Lascelles today.
There was no funny business from him today, no over-playing it, no attempted long diagonal balls, just a good defensive display.
Dummett 9 – Deservedly had the fans singing his name for the first time today. If anything, that should raise his confidence even more.
He has been really good since he came back into the side following his injury. Left back has been a ‘go-to area’ in terms of transfer targets over the past few years but Dummett has made that position his own this season (and last, if there was any doubt). A brilliant display today.
Diame 9 – Bossed and bullied the Southampton midfield. It looked at times like nobody wanted to go near him as he frequently muscled his opponents off the ball.
Amazing that Diame and Shelvey looked like a useless combination last year in the Championship… they were both brilliant again today.
Shelvey 8 – Maybe didn’t get around as much as Diame, but having just recovered from an injury, he was there to provide the key moments in assisting Kenedy for the first goal, and Ritchie for the third.
Should have had another one too after a beautiful pass to Dwight Gayle wasn’t finished off. A similar Jonjo Shelvey to what we saw against Man United. More of this please.
Ritchie 9 – Another one who has improved in form massively in 2018.
At the end of 2017 he had slipped out the team and the likes of Atsu, Murphy and Kenedy were moving ahead of him.
However, he has fought his way back into the fold, and chipped in with more goals to become one of the first names on the teamsheet again. Looks like he really has his tail up at the moment.
Perez 8 – Worked hard today and was integral in leading the counter-attack for the second goal.
There were the usual moans and groans as he was frequently outmuscled off the ball at times but he dug in today and his skill provided us with some breathing space at key times in the game.
Kenedy 8 – Two goals and the first one was a beauty! A great piece of skill to chest and turn his body at the same time.
I don’t think there is much chance of getting him in permanently, but for the time that he has been here so far, I think he has been spot on. The first Brazilian in my lifetime to turn out to be a real player at Newcastle… no disrespect to Fumaca and Cacapa.
Gayle 8 – Yes, he missed a few sitters, but unlike recently, the rest of his all round play today was good. This was typified by the assist to Kenedy for the second goal.
Having had the previous two chances fall to him awkwardly, and then on his left foot, when the ball fell to him on his right foot, it would have been easy for him to smash it at goal but he kept calm and picked out a pass that nobody saw from the Gallowgate End. Well done.
Rafa 10 – Not just for today, but considering how limited his resources are, and compared to all of the money that Southampton have spent, today showed just how big a difference it can be to have a world class manager.
Once again, the two players we did sign in January have proven to be key players, would we have won today, or against Man U, without them? I doubt it.
Thought he got the team spot on, tactics spot on.
Regardless of criticisms we all have, we are incredibly lucky to have a manager of his class, calibre and professionalism.
