Newcastle 3 Southampton 0 – Saturday 10 March 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Goals from Kenedy (two) and Matt Ritchie giving Newcastle a deserved victory.

A goal around 90 seconds after kick-off settled nerves and it could have been more than 3-0 as United picked up a very valuable three points.

Kevin Christie:

“Fantastic result in what turned out to be our most comfortable game of the season.

“Great to see some other results going our way too.

“You’d always back Rafa to get at least a draw in these 6-pointers due to his inherent pragmatism and relatively cautious approach – what we see as ‘must win’ games he sees as ‘must not lose’ but getting the 3 points today was massive.

“Draws alone are not enough to survive – that’s exactly why Southampton find themselves in big trouble now.

“Today’s win now gives us a bit of breathing space going into the FA Cup/ International break.

“Points are there to be won at Leicester, Everton and Watford after Easter, while we should beat at least one of Huddersfield and WBA at home.

“The win over Man Utd has shown that we’re capable of pulling off a big result at home if we’re fighting for our lives, so I wouldn’t see the Arsenal and Chelsea games as write-offs by any means.

“Basically, without being overly confident, I now think that we’re more likely to stay up than to go down, which is something I haven’t thought all season.

“So, well done to Rafa and all the lads and keep up the good work! Howay the lads!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“We have finally got the perfect  Saturday of results.

“Big chance now to stay up, win against Huddersfield and it will take a monumental collapse.

“What more to say other than everyone enjoy your Saturday night!”

Jamie Smith:

“Oh but we needed that eh?

“Comfortable win against a disjointed mess of a Southampton team as every other result went our way (by 5 o clock!)

“Couldn’t have asked for much more really, although if I felt like being pedantic the last half hour after Ritchie’s goal could have seen us really put the boot in on a relegation rival, but instead the game petered out a bit.

“Good solid showing by United, the kind of which should be enough to see us comfortably safe as I think we’ll be equally as strong against more wobbling relegation candidates.

“West Brom seemed to go over the edge today and judging from what I saw of Southampton today, something drastic needs to change for them to avoid the Championship.

“I’m confident now that we will, although what happens after that is the big question.”

Nat Seaton:

“Thoroughly deserved 3 points and +3 on the goal difference – forget how poor Southampton were!

“A great day, just got to wait 21 more days for the next one…”

Ben Cooper:

“If our next game is as comfortable as this one, I might start to wonder what all the worry was about.

“Southampton offered nothing, our defence was comfortable and played well.

“Shelvey and Zinedine Diame dominated the midfield and our wingers scored goals, a couple of very nice goals too.

“Southampton look certain to go down on that performance and now our survival looks much more achievable.

“My only small moan is that once again we had very little up front with Perez and Gayle probably our worst two players today.

“They combined well once for the second goal, a bit more of that and they will be much more use.”

David Punton:

“Three goals.

“A win in a relegation six pointer.

“Pulls us clear of the danger zone.

“What. A. Relief.”

Paul Lyon:

“Great performance, 7s & 8s out of 10 all over the park, fantastic!

“The timing of our goals rendered Southampton into submission, there was only ever gonna be one winner today.

“Results elsewhere pretty decent too .

“Howay the Lads!!!”

Toon Bano:

“Shelvey is an absolute Maestro.

“ If there’s a better English central midfielder…well there isn’t.

“Dummett is Maldini these days. A changed man under Rafa.

“We beat Saints 3-0.

“Brighton lose. Huddersfield and Swansea draw. West Ham are humiliated at home to Burnley. West Brom and Pardew lose again. Sunderland lose. Mitro scores twice!

“If Carlsberg did Saturday afternoons…!!!”

Jamie Swan:

“Get the eff in!

“Massive game today man and successfully hurdled.

“Three points were VITAL and the lads delivered. THANK CHRIST!!

“There is some garbage down the bottom of the league and I really think that we are better than most down there.

“Still not putting money on anything yet, but we’ve crept up and the goal difference is very healthy compared to some.

“Hate the plastic Blues of Chelsea but hope they paste Palace tonight.”

  • Geordiegiants

Tell you what, if we had of held that 2-0 together at the Bournemouth game that would of been us all but guaranteed survival today.

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

impressive how you can take a negative out of a positive result…

      • Geordiegiants

That’s not a negative at all, it’s a just a fact, read back through my post kidda, apart from the Bournemouth game which we blatantly threw away, I have nothing but positivity for Rafa and the players. My only negativity is to Jabba and Rafa bashers. I forgot to mention ❄️.

      • Benmagpie

Four points from manure and Bournemouth away is amazing form. How’s that for positivity?

        • Geordiegiants

That would of sounded good without the benefit of hindsight.

          • Benmagpie

I suppose it depends on how the cards fall. If we stay up Bournemouth would be a point gained. If we get relegated it would be two lost. Either way I was definitely one of those that just wanted us to stay up, even if it was fourth bottom. Anything higher is a bonus. Hopefully fingers crossed we do stay up with new enthusiastic ownership and Rafa at the helm. Howay the toon.

  • TheNutJob

Zinedine Diame & Paolo Dummett, a great win today but those lads must be on extra strength lager

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

      alcohol free lager more like

  • Alreet

I called 3 of the so called settled teams in the prem to be relegated this season. Other teams just want it more. At the moment it looks like west brom are buried. Its between palace. Stoke and saints now. West ham will pull clear again

    • Damon Horner

Result and behaviour… Few cracks there

  • Damon Horner

Southampton were awful today but we took our chances well and that’s what counts, table looks a little easier to look at right now! Results went our way today.

  • Essex_Toon

Great result. Here’s hoping the gap remains til the end of the season.

On the note of our failing strikers, it’s interesting to think that Armstrong and Mitrovic have both scored 7 EACH in the league since their January moves. Our front two for next season perhaps?

    • Adam

In the league below and two leagues below. Good to see they are doing well though. Huge result today.

      • Essex_Toon

100% agree. I’m very pleased they’re doing the business elsewhere. Either giving Rafa a headache for next year or increasing their value.

    • Geordiegiants

I would like to point out the level of the championship, Keiron Clark looked world class down there.

    • Damon Horner

I’m holding out hope we sign somebody better than the pair

      • Geordiegiants

        Aren’t we all?? 👍

  • Peaky Magpie

I did one of those predictor things recently and I had us finishing on 41points in 15th place….don’t think that’s going to be too far off now…

    • Geordiegiants

It would take a monumental collapse now PM.

      • Down Under Mag

Yeah but you always feel like that could be just around the corner. Hopefully the players rest up, come back refreshed from Spain and ready to give it everything they have got for the remainder of the season.

        • Geordiegiants

We have never ever looked like we are about to collapse in any time Rafa has been here, we have had bad runs, but we always look like we are organised and are keeping it together.

  • molend

Sat here in deep conversation with my friend Plum (He’s actually Bulgarian and his name’s Slivo Vitsa, so some of you might know him. One of my brothers-in-law got pallatic with him a few years back). Anyway, we reckon that, yes, we scored three goals today, but that this pales into insignficance compared to the 7 (seven!) scored by Gateshead against the mighty Maidenhead (can I say that?) United. We blame Benitez.

    • Geordiegiants

👍 All the Rafa bashers are doing silent job tonight.

      • molend

I hope that doesn’t mean what I think it does

        • Geordiegiants

They have nothing to say, it’s always been a tactical game for Rafa, he has played it perctly so far, keeping the scores down and doing the only thing he can, keeping it tight.

          • molend

      • Monkseaton Magpies

I am a Rafa supporter but think the way they controlled possession is why fans get angry with his tactics. We rely on getting goals on the break even at home that is where these people are coming from.

        • Damon Horner

I’d rather we did enough this season thanks let the players pretend they’re footballers and go down. I feel it’s either one or the other

        • TheFatController

Saying you’re a Rafa suppporter before criticising him doesn’t make that criticism more valid.

‘My criticism must be valid because I am his biggest fan…’ ??

It’s not valid. We play on the break because that system suits the players we have. Teams always on the front foot have exceptional forward players, all of whom cost £50m plus.

        • Down Under Mag

I think he set us up like that from last season, where he got a lot of stick, but it was deliberate with this season in mind. We were never going to dominate possession against a lot of top flight teams, so it made sense to set us up to soak up pressure and counter attack well. We have lacked some firepower due to lack of investment otherwise we probably would be in the top half of the table given all the chances we have missed this season. If we had set up to “get at teams” and “have a go” like some suggest, then we would have been relegated by Xmas.

      • stevetoontoon

Just thinking…. wheres ghostrider? only comes oot when we lose or draw

        • joe mac

          ghostriders in the sky!

        • Lakeland Mag

Of course. He’s someone who’s said he’d happily see Newcastle relegated if it meant getting rid of Rafa, such is his bias against Benitez. He’d never come on here and say something positive and/or complimentary about a good Rafa performance.

  • Lhc

Perfect day, we win and are now in a very healthy position to stay up, Mitrovic scores another 2 (Rafa take note) and the sh#t down the road beaten 👌

  • 52k

Any manager who can turn Diame into the player of recent, surely deserves credit. Diame isn’t the only one either. Top notch from the manager giving all the help he has had from the gargoyle at the top.

  • GlasgowMag

Well done to the boys and Rafa should of been more if Gayle had his puma kings on lol!!!!

  • Down Under Mag

Great result, 3 points against huddersfield and we should be in a very strong position. not going to be an easy game from here on in but need to cash in on those “6-pointers”.

  • FairsCup69

Kenedy and Dubrqvka have changed our fortunes. 6 pts from the Udders and Pardews mob should be enough. And we still have another 6 games on top of those 2 of course….

    • Wor Lass

Dead right. Dubravka has just steadied the ship at the back and gives everyone confidence and kenedy has inspired the others to up their games. He had a stinker last time out but his attitude seems to have rubbed off and made the rest think that anything`s possible. Two great additions – let`s hope Slimani`s as influential if we ever see him.

  • HarryHype59

Great result today against a woeful Southampton team. Well done Rafa and the team. Two more wins and a couple of draws and safety is assured!

  • gallowgate26

For me, there is a picture from this game, when you open the football text book at page; ‘it’s not how much possession you have, it’s what you do with it’. Just love that we beat them 3-0, when the likes of Le Tiss and quite a few of the sawfern media see Saints as in some way superior to us… haha!
