Michael Owen says he is backing Newcastle United

Michael Owen believes that Newcastle v Southampton will be a ‘tight, close affair.’

The visitors have drawn more (13) games than any other top tier side and that includes their last four away matches.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have also been unbeaten on their last four away trips in the Premier League, drawing at Burnley, Watford and Man Utd, plus beating West Brom.

Michael Owen is once again getting more familiar with his old club and refers to Newcastle as ‘United’, tipping the Magpies to get all three points in ‘another low-scoring encounter’.

Newcastle have managed seven wins so far and apart from going ‘goal crazy’ against West Ham, winning 3-0 at home and 3-0 away, only the Stoke home match (2-1)  saw more than one goal scored by United.

The other four victories being 1-0 wins over Man Utd and Palace at home, as well as Stoke and Swansea away.

So I suppose if you do really fancy us to win then a bet on 1-0 looks attractive.

As for attractive, or entertainment, nobody can accuse the 50,000+ of turning up with any expectation of goals and entertainment.

As Michael Owen points out, nobody else comes close to being as low as the 12 goals Newcastle have scored in 14 matches at St James Park.

Even West Brom have scored 15 at the Hawthorns and as for Manchester City, 51 at the Etihad already…we can dream!

So not difficult to see what we will most likely need on Saturday – a solid defence marshalled by Jamaal Lascelles and find a goal from somewhere.

It would be fantastic to get a win with a bit of style but we are all realists this season and will take a victory any way we can.

Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:

“No side has scored fewer home PL goals than Newcastle…

“But one was enough to beat Manchester United in their last home game and I think the Magpies will keep all three points, from what looks sure to be a tight, close affair.

“Southampton are unbeaten in their last four away league games and will be a tough nut to crack but United can keep the points in another low-scoring encounter.

“Tip is Newcastle to win at 9/5.”
