Michael Owen has been looking at Saturday’s match at St James Park.
Huddersfield looked to be pulling themselves away from relegation trouble when beating West Brom and Bournemouth in their last two Premier League matches of February.
However, the relegation race continues to ebb and flow, with March bringing no goals for David Wagner’s team and only one point from three games, especially disappointing when their last two games were home to fellow strugglers Swansea and Crystal Palace.
The visitors have only scored 25 goals this season with West Brom the one club to score less, whilst on their travels only West Brom and Brighton have scored less than Huddersfield’s 10.
In contrast to Huddersfield, Newcastle seem to be hitting form at the right time, as well as finding a few more goals.
Victory on Saturday would be a third home win in a row and the last game at St James Park was a convincing 3-0 win over Southampton, only the third time in 30 PL games that Newcastle had scored more than twice in a match.
Michael Owen points out that Dwight Gayle is NUFC top scorer with only five goals but despite this predicts a low scoring win for Newcastle.
Before the turn of the year Newcastle had failed to score in 10 of their 21 PL matches, including the 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield in their first away game.
However, only in the defeat at Anfield have the Magpies failed to score in 2018 in the league.
Obviously Newcastle United are still not there as a real danger going forward but the stats suggest they are getting better and can manage at least one or two on Saturday, whilst with Jamaal Lascelles marshalling the defence Newcastle look more than capable of a clean sheet against the low scoring visitors.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Huddersfield have failed to score in their last three Premier League games.
“And I feel they will struggle against a Newcastle side who have won their last two home fixtures in the league.
“Dwight Gayle is the Magpies’ top PL scorer with five so far this season.
“Which highlights the fact that United have struggled for goals this term.
“But they put three past Southampton in their last game and I expect the hosts to keep the points in a low scoring contest.
“Tip is Newcastle to win at 3/4.”
