Michael Owen has given his prediction for the Liverpool v Newcastle clash on Saturday.
A game between two of his former clubs, Owen says that to stand any chance of getting a result, ‘United’ have to stop Mohamed Salah.
Difficult to argue with that one, seem as the Egyptian attacking player has scored 31 goals in all competitions, the same as Newcastle’s entire squad.
He actually didn’t have the greatest of games at St James Park, with the now departed Coutinho scoring an excellent goal and being man of the match.
As Michael Owen also points out, that 1-1 draw means that Rafa Benitez still hasn’t lost to Liverpool in a Premier League match, drawing 2-2 when he was at Chelsea, then the same scoreline when going to Anfield in the relegation run-in of 2015/16.
Liverpool are obviously a very good and exciting team but I think 6/1 (see below) for a draw is a great price for Rafa Beniez to preserve that unbeaten record.
The scousers might be unbeaten in the league at home this season but they have won less games at home than anybody else in the top six, having had eight wins and six draws.
The six PL draws at Anfield have been against Burnley, Man Utd, Chelsea, West Brom, Everton and Spurs, plus of course they lost at home to West Brom in the FA Cup.
Michael Owen reminds us that the record is shocking overall for Newcastle, never having won in the last 21 games at Anfield, plus Liverpool have scored more goals (89) against Newcastle in the Premier League era than against any other team.
However, two of the last four visits saw Newcastle take away a point, as well as leading beyond the hour mark in another before losing 2-1.
A tough match for sure but one where Rafa Benitez gives us hope, plus it is worth remembering that in the last 11 weeks it is only Manchester City who have beaten Newcastle in the Premier League.
Michael Owen speaking to BetVictor:
“Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 21 home league games against Newcastle United and they have scored more goals against the Magpies (89) than any other side in the history of the Premier League.
“Rafa Benitez is sure to get a warm reception back on Merseyside and it should be noted that he is unbeaten in three previous PL games against his former club with both games at Anfield finishing 2-2.
“Mo Salah has scored in his last six games for the Reds in all competitions and United need to stop the Egyptian if they are to get a positive result against this exciting Liverpool side.
