Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0 – Match ratings of all NUFC players

Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0  – Saturday 3 March 2018 5.30pm

Dubravka 6 – A big test for the new keeper today and he looked a little nervous in terms of commanding his box (maybe nervous is the wrong word) and his own distribution.

Perhaps an over-confidence led to a few mistakes or slippery moments?

Then again, those slippery moments were matched by a few good pieces of goalkeeping. He certainly couldn’t do anything about the goals.  Big performances will be needed from him in the following games but you would rather his ‘poorer’ displays came in these games and not the ‘six pointers’.

Yedlin 6 – It is sad to say, but when Yedlin can’t get forward and around the winger in front of him, then we do struggle to attack and create chances.

A sign of the times that our best attacking outlet is our right back. I don’t think he did too bad defensively, especially given the incredible threat he was up against.

Lejeune 5 – Having mentioned just how good the Liverpool front three are, it might seem silly of me to knock him, but he just doesn’t fill me with any confidence. Didn’t do anything spectacularly wrong on the day but I prefer Ciaran Clark all day.

Lascelles  5 – Everyone has sung his praises recently but he wasn’t great today.

Almost seemed like at times he couldn’t decide whether to stay or go and therefore he was often caught somewhere in the middle.

To be honest, I am not sure that Lascelles, or the rest of the team, are that comfortable with a back five.

Important that he picks up the team again to move on to a winnable next game. Got VERY lucky in the last minute fouling Salah OUTSIDE the box, which for me, meant he should have got a red card.

Dummett 5 – Lots of people think he is a better centre half but not for me. I think he looks far more comfortable at left back.

Again, I think everyone looks more comfortable in a back four. Did ok today but just outclassed like the rest of his team-mates.

Diame 6 –  thought he did ok, and if I had to pick a best player on the day, it would probably be him. Was composed in the middle of the park when given the chance.

Merino 4 – I was really disappointed in him today. Completely over-ran in midfield and gave away the ball too often for me.

He may get another chance against Southampton if Shelvey is still out and I really hope he puts in a much improved performance.

Kenedy 5 – I was surprised by just how bad he was on the ball today. Hoping it was just an off day for him! Obviously it is difficult for him to express himself from left back.

It might have been down on paper as left wing back but he barely got over the halfway line!

Murphy 6  – Looked promising on the ball but was so wasteful. Put in a fair shift defensively but I don’t think the formation helped him either, as when he did get the ball there was no support for him.

Inevitably, when he or Atsu received the ball, they found that there was 9 players behind them and only Dwight Gayle in close attendance.

Atsu 6 – Between himself and Murphy it was almost like every decision they made ended up being the wrong one and every final ball they attempted was unsuccessful.

Gayle 5 – Offers nothing. It is hard for him up there by himself of course, but I just don’t think he offers anything on the ball. Unless he scores, he might as well not be playing.

The gulf in class going forward today was so obvious – it was as big a gulf in class that I have seen in a long time in a Newcastle game.

The players or the manager can’t be blamed for that, we all know what the crack is in that department. It is just sad to watch sometimes.

Subs:

Joselu 6 –  Put himself about and did well in the short time that he was on. I still think he offers more than Gayle in the Premier League. If only we had brought in a striker in January, even just a loan signing would have been great…

Perez N/A – (Not on long enough)

Hayden N/A – (Not on long enough)
