According to an ‘Exclusive’ on Sunday morning, Newcastle United could be set to lose Jamaal Lascelles to West Ham.
It is claimed that the West Ham owners are desperate to get their club back on track and want the Newcastle Captain as one of their main summer transfer targets, if they stay up.
It would be a major surprise if the Hammers didn’t want to improve their defence…
They have actually scored more goals (36) than any other club currently in the bottom nine but when it comes to defending, only Stoke (58) have conceded more than West Ham’s total of 57 leaked so far, in only 30 games.
The ‘Exclusive’ has been ran by The Sun and the story hardly stands up, even if you believed they had inside information that West Ham are planning a move for Jamaal Lascelles.
Liverpool have just paid over £70m for van Dijk and poor/average central defenders such as Mamadou Sakho (Palace) and Michael Keane (Everton) have been bought for £25m each.
So for The Sun to suggest West Ham could get Lascelles for £15m when he is Newcastle’s best defender, best player and captain, is laughable.
As for being ‘tempted’ to move to West Ham if he is offered more money, you would hope/assume that if Jamaal Lascelles ever did leave Newcastle, he wouldn’t be seeing a move to The Hammers as a step up, or even sideways, hopefully.
Newcastle fans and Rafa Benitez see Lascelles as a player to build a team around and now we are waiting on safety being achieved as quickly as possible, then the club to be sold and everybody to be looking forward once again.
Or…if we are still stuck with Mike Ashley, that he sees the only way forward for everybody, is to properly back Rafa Benitez this summer with the right level of players to complement the likes of Newcastle’s captain.
‘West Ham are planning a £15million raid for Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles.
Hammers want to make some big captures to please their angry fans and they see centre-half Lascelles as one of their main targets.
Owners David Sullivan and David Gold have already started work on improving recruitment and there will be funds for new talent if they stay up.
Lascelles, 24, has been a stand-out for the Toon this season under manager Rafa Benitez.
But he could be tempted by a bigger deal with West Ham — especially as the defender’s agent is close to the Hammers camp.
In the end, a deal is likely to come down to the size of the bid and the wages offered.’
