Jamaal Lascelles rallies the troops

Jamaal Lascelles has been speaking ahead of Saturday’s match.

It is a game where strength of character could be the difference between the teams.

In their last 20 Premier League games each, Newcastle and Southampton have managed to win only five of 40 matches between them.

With both teams tending to be set up as hard to beat, Southampton have drawn nine of their last 16 matches, so it could be a game where a mistake costs either team the game.

With Jamaal Lascelles in the team, Newcastle have done far better this season, both in terms of goals conceded and results.

The Newcastle Captain assures fans that the team are going to ‘have a proper go at the weekend’.

It is the usual stuff you hear from pretty much any team/player but Lascelles has earned the respect of supporters so it is not as laughable as it would have been with other former Newcastle captains.

The bottom line though is that as Jamaal Lascelles says, ‘We have to get three points against Southampton.’

The chances of getting that are far better if Newcastle press and attack from the kick-off.

The Saints will be pushovers though, as despite not winning many, they have drawn a hefty 13 of their 29 PL matches, including impressive ones against Spurs and Man Utd.

The pressure is now really on and this is the last chance for Lascelles to impress Gareth Southgate before his names his next England squad.

This result is so important for so many reasons and a win will make the three weeks without a game, a lot more bearable.

Jamaal Lascelles:

“We have to get three points against Southampton.

“We will set out to win the game, go for it, make sure we do win.

“We need to, with the (three week) break afterwards.

“We have put the Liverpool game behind us and we’re looking forward to the next two.

“We have got Southampton on Saturday – we have to be really confident going into it.

“They are still a tough team but we have been playing some really good football recently.

“The boys are really going to look forward to playing against them.

“We will get our heads down in training, listen to the boss, refresh and have a proper go at the weekend.”
