Garth Crooks has picked his Premier League team of the week.

The BBC Sport pundit including one Newcastle star after they took apart Southampton at St James Park.

Reflecting on the 3-0 win for the home side, Garth Crooks says he still isn’t sure about what he watched.

His dilemma being…’I can’t make up my mind if Newcastle were that good or Southampton were that bad.’

Maybe the truth of it is, that it was a bit/lot of both things.

The 3-0 scoreline flattered the visitors and if it had been five or six they couldn’t have complained, such was Newcastle’s superiority.

As for the star player, little surprise that it was Kenedy who Garth Crooks selected for his Premier League team of the week.

Always a threat, the left winger scored a brilliant opening goal and then finished off a flowing team move for the second.

Garth Crooks talking to BBC Sport:

“Kenedy, Newcastle:

“I can’t make up my mind if Newcastle were that good or Southampton were that bad.

“One thing is for sure is that Kenedy made the Saints pay for their lack of team cohesion.

“It’s been a long time since I have seen players so concerned with themselves and couldn’t care about the team.

“Southampton have big problems.

“Did you know?

“Kenedy became the first Newcastle player to score a brace at St James Park in the Premier League since Georginio Wijnaldum in May 2016 (Newcastle 5 Spurs 1).”

    A Chelsea loanee, Garth?
    Ok fair enough.
Maybe put Dummett in or Shelvey or Diame along with Kenedy.

He can’t work out whether Newcastle were that good or Southampton were that bad.
The truth was Southampton really were that bad but we were just too good for their bad.

    Porciestreet.
For me, GC should ferkov out of Newcastle business and get a job on a dust cart or something useful.

A lot of pundits made up their minds about the Toon well before Christmas when the team was struggling to come to grips with the PL without any confident keeper and regular defender (Dummett), and with 5 not proven as regular top league players coming into the side …

…If Ashley had of released the funds that had come into the club since Rafa took over we would have been set up with players such as Dubravka, Slimani and possibly Kenedy, and we would have more than likely won a few of those games we narrowly lost …only 4 or 5 better results and we’d have been pushing for a place in Europe using the organisational skills, team spirit and player confidence building of Rafa…

…I reckon the pundits would see the players and club in a totally different light by now, and nowhere near the relegation fodder one that the owner turned us into!!!

Welding a team together needs a very special set of skills. We’re just above the relegation zone yet the guys played for each other and the team not themselves – Kenedy’s second goal being a fine example. I can’t believe Rafa has managed the players he has so that we’re now pushing the top of the ‘rest of’ in the Prem

Rafa could have a problem when (if) Slimani is fit. Do you play him and perhaps upset a winning side as Keegan did when he bought Asprilla ?

    • Dillon Tovak

He’ll ease him in through substitutions so if he’s no good Gayle would start again next week and so on.
For some reason I’m not overly confident he’s going to be the answer, but…🤞

Bring on Joselu or Slimani? Answer should be simple enough.

        👍👍👍

Is that the same Asprilla who scored a hat-trick against Barcelona?

      • kingfisher

Correct molend ! And the same Asprilla who helped us lose a 12 point lead for the Prem title. If it aint broke, don’t try and fix it ! We never won anything under Keegan but having said that, they were exciting times which ultimately ended in failure. 😁

Of the 8 games remaining we only took 1 point from the corresponding fixtures this season and that was against rock bottom West Brom. we also only scored 5 and whilst conceding 17 so getting the necessary points for safety may be more difficult than first seems if we cant start taking chances. We need to find 9 points which is a big ask compared to the 1 we got from the last occasion we played these teams.
