The Newcastle team v Liverpool has just been confirmed.

NUFC looking to pick up a bonus point (or better…) at a venue where they haven’t won a league game since 1994.

Any surprises…?

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Dubravka, Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett, Murphy, Merino, Diame, Kenedy, Atsu, Gayle

and the Subs:

Darlow, Manquillo, Clark, Hayden, Ritchie, Perez, Joselu

Murphy wasn’t even in the 18 man squad for Bournemouth but comes in, along with Atsu, Perez and surprisingly Ritchie making way.

It is three changes in all, with the injured Shelvey replaced by Mikel Merino.

Both Ritchie and Perez drop to the bench.

Interesting to see how this eleven line up.

As for Liverpool:

Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Can, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Salah, Fermin0

As for subs:

Mignolet, Milner, Gomez, Moreno, Lallana, Matip, Solanke

  • Simon Ritter

Makes me think Ritchie was not 100% when subbed at Bournemouth.

  • Alreet

That was my team. The 2 young wingers given a chance at the same time. At least rafa isnt reverting to the tired ways of perez and hoss.

We can really give them a game today.

  • Brian Tait

If anybody has a link for the game please post

    • mentalman

Are you on twitter theres usually a few good ones on there

      • Andy Mac

Yup or Reddit ? If all else fails try c r i c free but beware of stuff

  • robbersdog

No Joselu? That’s ridiculous – I had a hundred quid on him to score a hat-trick.

  • Andy Mac

Well no one can say that’s parking the bus ?

I see Pardwho’s on another one of his “runs” and Baggies fans singing “Sacked in the morning” to him ?

    • Mrkgw

Lets hope that should it happen that WBA don’t bring in anyone decent. I wouldn’t be so hasty so as to celebrate Pardews dismissal.

      • Andy Mac

I’m not celebrating I’d prefer him to stay until the bitter end. Just mentioning that his unenviable record of going on winless runs continues unabated ! If anyone else gives him a job in the future the employer/owner should be sectioned.

        • Mrkgw

Yes, agree. But lets just hope that MA doesn’t move to bring him back. Possibly a reason for me not calling for Rafas head!!

  • Mrkgw

As well as we might have hoped. Lose this though, and I will be fuming. Mitrovic scored again for Fulham. Rafa masterstroke eh.

    • robbersdog

It’s the Championship – big difference.

      • Mrkgw

Mitro has scored for us in the Premiership before. Rafa cut him out.

        • Mark Potter

Yes, but his lack of goals got us relegated. Not good enough.

          • Mrkgw

            Better than the options currently.

          • robbersdog

I disagree; Gayle is the better striker at Premier League level.

          • Mrkgw

All opinions but Gayle is a different style of player. Would ideally be a foil for Mitro or vice-versa. Rafa is too negative to run with that though.

          • robbersdog

It’s nothing to do with negativity; Rafa obviously has an issue with Mitro and we’ve just got to accept that and support the manager.

It’s not as if Mitro has been a world-beater for us; in fact, he’s been distinctly average since he arrived.

          • mentalman

He scored more goals than the other strikers that season and rafa hardly played him

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

thats why Rafa sent him to the championship, he didn`t want Mitro scoring in the prem

    • Brian Tait

Rafa wouldn’t and couldn’t play to his strengths. Concentrating on our defensive shape rather than attack. That what happens when you have mediocre players

      • Mrkgw

        Fair point.

  • Peaky Magpie

Regardless of what happens today we MUST beat Southampton at home next weekend….

    • Mrkgw

      Agreed. Six pointer that.

  • Coach Clagnut

Fairly ambitious line-up from Senor Rafa. Reckon Atsu must have been busting a gut in training this week as, going on his last few appearances, he’s been minging.

  • robbersdog

Swansea and Watford have won and Stoke and Bournemouth both managed an away draw.

The results haven’t gone in our favour, and a heavy defeat today would be a blow.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Must be holding the Hoss in reserve in case the Bin Dippers get lucky & score
    😂😂😂

    • Peaky Magpie

Keep the Hoss in Liverpool….The Grand National is just around the corner…

      • Coach Clagnut

        He’d fall at the first.

        • Peaky Magpie

He’d fall at the first in The Derby…..🤣😂🤣

  • Brian Tait

Results so far not too bad. West Brom look gone. Stoke / Saints nobody got three points. Swansea – West Ham somebody had to get points. West Ham are one of the worst teams I have seen this season. We need to hope Palace and Brighton pick up nothing against the so called big six.
As for us I would take one point and be happy

    • Peaky Magpie

      Aye,WBA,Stoke & Palace down for me….

      • Coach Clagnut

Wet Spam not looking too clever either.

        • Peaky Magpie

You could be right, one team always seem to have an horrific run in and old cheery chops Moyes has previous from last season.

      • Jezza

West Brom have certainly got it all to do.

        • Coach Clagnut

Who’d of thought it with the coaching talent at their disposal.

          • robbersdog

Pardew and Carver – the Laurel and Hardy of Premier League managers.

          • Jezza

I’m just petrified that same coaching talent will be at our disposal next season.

    • Jezza

I won’t be happy with a point today, I’ll be ecstatic.

      • Peaky Magpie

        😂🤣😂

    • robbersdog

Happy? If we get a point, I’d be doing cartwheels.

  • anyobrien

Take a point now but unfortunately can’t see anything but a defeat…. And it’s [email protected] freezing doon here.

    • Mrkgw

Good luck – hopefully a result to make good your braving the cold.

    • Peaky Magpie

Are you at Anfield or Consett ??? 😂🤣😂 Safe journey home.

    • Coach Clagnut

If we have a go there’s always a chance. Sadly, I think it’s damage limitation needed today.

      • Why? Is Liverpool – Barcelona, Man City? I think we definitely have a shot against them. Pound for pound, Liverpool are only as good as is Salah and Mane. If those two can be dealt with (Dummett and Yedlin style) we surely have a shot at this. I don’t see Henderson or any other Liverpool player better than Diame, Merino, Lascelles or Kenedy.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

add Firmino & you`re taking the p1 $$ saying that Diame is better than their midfield.

  • nufcslf

If Salah is on song today, I don’t even see us getting a shot on goal. It would have to be a naught naught draw. Prove me wrong please.

  • Murphy can finish and get in good positions. Benitez realized we were missing that in the last few games and brought him back. I think Murphy is here to stay and so far he has developed really well.

  • Brian Tait

    Any links please

  • GToon

Anybody like to have a guess at what minute one of our players gets sent off. I’m going for 37 mins.

    • Lakeland Mag

Who’d you have in mind ? Neither Mitrovich nor Shelvey are playing.

      • GToon

Well Dummett just had ball to hand. Anybody really. It’s never mattered in the past.

  • Brian Tait

I detest radio commentaries. How are we doing

    • DC1964

Sent you a streaming link but The Mag won’t show it!

      • Brian Tait

Thanks. Are we holding out comfortably or by the skin of our pants

        • DC1964

Doing okay but it’s all Liverpool, we’ve parked the bus!

          • TheNutJob

            A very big bus

        • thewildchimp

          soccerstreams, lads.

    • GToon

Defending well but a lucky deflection let them through our midfield and Sala made it one nowt. Diame had a great shot tipped away. We could be dangerous on the break. Look ok, just need a bit of luck.

  • TheNutJob

    I think we`re going for a 0-0 lads
    😂😂😂

    • nufcslf

      Looking very like it.

      • TheNutJob

be a miracle but a point at Anfield`s not to be sniffed at

        • nufcslf

True, but it is painful to watch.

  • nufcslf

I think of all the teams that used to get so much flak for parking the bus against Keegan’s side and now it is what we have to watch. Not good in my football mind.

  • Mxpx

I’ve said all season Liverpool struggle with wing backs glad to see us giving it a go

  • TheNutJob

    1-0
Slomo left for dead i`m afraid

    • DC1964

      Salah never misses!

      • thewildchimp

Lascelles shouldn’t have left him. Virtually anyone else shooting is better.

        • DC1964

          Yes, bad marking

    • Leazes.

      Shocking blunder by his marker

      • TheNutJob

        he`s world class

        • Leazes.

Well whoever it was went in the wrong direction giving Salah more space!

          • TheNutJob

            very true

  • nufcslf

Now what the f**k do you do? defend a 1-0 loss. This defending thing when you can’t is not a tac-tic, it is suicide.

  • Peaky Magpie

Start warming The Hoss up….sugar cubes at the ready….

    • Coach Clagnut

Has he had his nosebag yet?

  • TheNutJob

we`ve woken up, starting to go at them

  • Coach Clagnut

Unlucky. Great goalkeeping. Nice move from the lads.

    • DC1964

      Superb save

    • nufcslf

Good effort and deserved a goal. I was almost on the edge of my seat for a second, there.

  • Coach Clagnut

Not too bad overall. Atsu needs subbing or a rocket up his jaxie.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      been terrible, put Ritchie on

  • Peaky Magpie

May as well just go for it 2nd half….was it Neil Young who said “Better To Burn Out Than Fade Away” ???…..

    • robbersdog

And Kurt Cobain quoted that line in his suicide note; which is what I’ll be doing if we get relegated.

      • Peaky Magpie

        Aye he did you’re right.

      • thewildchimp

Well, if you believe that a left-handed man shot himself in the mouth with a heavy shotgun using his right hand… Not his suicide note, is what I’m trying to say.

Also, it’s from the film “Highlander”. And who knows how old it really is… :)

    • Coach Clagnut

Nice thought. If only we had the players. Champions League quarter finalists v. Championship winners.
Thanks Fatty, a prince amongst men.

    • Coach Clagnut

      The bad dude in Highlander.

    • nufcslf

As much as I should be glad he is on the bench and not playing, I do hope the Joss does get on at some point today. Especially if it stays 1-0.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Lacelles made a fatal mistake leaving Salah & bang 1 nil, he doesn`t miss those

    • Peaky Magpie

…..and to think Chelsea got rid…

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

and a few others at Man U & City

    • DC1964

Keeper was unlucky for it to go through his legs

      • Coach Clagnut

Hit his leg on the way in. Scrappy goal.

    • GToon

The mistake was not giving us the free kick when Merino got legged up. From there, seconds later it one nowt.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

we can still come back, they look dodgy at the back, all is not lost

    • Mxpx

You’re right they are prone to a late goal… If only we had a striker on the bench well I suppose joselu did manage a goal against Liverpool earlier In the season

    • Wor Lass

The lads are battling well. Bit of a bad break for their goal and I thought Lascelles had to try and block the Ox.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        the Muppets blaming SloMo

        • Wor Lass

Nah. he was left for dead because of the ricochet.

  • Coach Clagnut

Dummet’s having a good game. Did well there.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      Dummys been top class

  • Wor Lass

I want to see abit more from Kenedy this half.

  • Mxpx

That Alexander Arnold is rapid if we’re going to hit them on the break it needs to be down the other side we should switch Murphy and atsu

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    2-0 dead & buried

  • Coach Clagnut

Stitched right up. Keep giving the ball away cheaply and that’s what you get.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

we haven`t got the quality, it`s as simple as that

      • Coach Clagnut

        Never a truer word spoken.

  • Wor Lass

That`s all come from Kenedy losing the ball (again) and giving up – don`t know what`s the matter with him but he needs to go off. He`s not the same lad today.

    • nufcslf

Saw that, dropped his head after losing the ball trying to go inside and into the trouble to boot.

  • Coach Clagnut

Kenedy, Merino, Atsu are all off their game. Unless we pull one out of the hat this is now a damage limitaion exercise.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      Merino isn`t match fit

      • Coach Clagnut

        What’s Atsu’s excuse?

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

you wouldn`t know he was playing

          • Coach Clagnut

            The Invisible Footballer.

  • Martin

I fancy Liverpool to go on and win this now.

    • Coach Clagnut

      Just a hunch?

      • Martin

Although 2-0 can be a very tricky score line, as any good commentator knows.

        • Coach Clagnut

We found that out last week.

    • nufcslf

I fancied Liverpool to on and win this even before Bournmouth came back from 2 down and get a draw last week.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

The Hoss is about to enter the arena

  • robbersdog

Ok, we’re f*cked. Let’s keep the score vaguely respectable, and move on.

  • robbersdog

Good news guys…Joselu is coming on!

    • thewildchimp

      Get some SLOE gin, mate…

  • Wor Lass

Liverpool`ll be trembling at the memory of Hoss`s scorcher against them.

    • Coach Clagnut

They visibly wilted at the sound of his name.

      • Wor Lass

They were actually p*ssing themselves laughing.

  • nufcslf

I liked the polite round of applause from the Liverpool fans from the, ‘Get out of our club’ chant…….

    • Coach Clagnut

Yup…they’ve been there and worn the t-shirt.

      • Danimal

Briefly. Our t-shirt is getting a bit smelly now.

  • Wor Lass

It`s not much consolation but the lads have battled away. If only we had some presence up front.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

Spot on a strikers been ignored for years

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

My Motm for Newcastle is Paul Dummett

    • Coach Clagnut

      Second that.

    • Wor Lass

No argument from me – Lejeune had a cracking first half, mind.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

aye he`s been good as well

  • Peaky Magpie

Southampton game HUGE,they have a better GD than us now….

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

you never know what`ll happen with our lot

    • Coach Clagnut

It’s been huge game for weeks now unfortunately

      • Peaky Magpie

        Next 2 are now must wins,nowt else…Southampton & Huddersfield…

    • nufcslf

Trouble being this performance will give them absolutely nothing to be affraid of. Have a go and you will likely win.

    • Coach Clagnut

      Rumour is they’ve got strikers

    • Danimal

We’ve still got better points than them, even if we let them escape with a draw.

      • Peaky Magpie

Good point ( sorry for the pun)…wish the season was over me…it’s going to the wire but I still think there are 2 teams worse than us….WBA have had it already,Pardewed

  • Coach Clagnut

Kenedy been on the drink recently? He’s having a shocker. Mind, he’s in good company.

  • TheNutJob

Alan Partridge odds on to be next manager of West Brom with Betvictor
    😂😂😂

    • Peaky Magpie

      Ahh haaaa….

  • Mrkgw

To think that our supporters braved the weather to travel to, and watch that meek, lilly hearted and negatively set-up display. Even down to substitutions, it was pure negative. No fight, no desire to win. Disgusting. I will skirt the emotive issue of Rafa (who I do consider to be a factor) and cut to the chase. ASHLEY OUT!

    • Coach Clagnut

We’ve lacked quality all season. Surely this hasn’t come as a revelation to you?

    • thewildchimp

To be fair, it was an excellent defensive display (although the weather helped a lot), but offensively we look(ed) like a bunch of rag-tags put together a few months before.

    • nufcslf

Casley’s lack of investment is the pure cause of performances like this and likely 10 more to come to yry and stay up. Rafa is brave enough to go with it, knowing it is the only thing to do. It is awful, but looks worse when when 2 up like last week. Nothing will change and could get much worse until fatty f**ks off.

  • Coach Clagnut

    2 – 0 up and they’re cheating for a penalty. For shame!

    • TheNutJob

      was outside the box

      • Coach Clagnut

        Correct.

      • Wor Lass

It was definitely a foul and would have been a red. The lino was running to catch up with play and wasn`t watching, fortunately.

  • TheNutJob

    Fatty oot, sack the board

    • Leazes.

      He is the board

  • Peaky Magpie

At least this one is out the way….apart from at The Dele Ali Diving Show coming at Wembley we’ll still hopefully be able to get enough points elsewhere….

    • Coach Clagnut

      And Harry Kane’s Chop Shop.

    • TheNutJob

we got to win the next 2, no draws we need 6 points

      • Peaky Magpie

Without a doubt…hopefully by a couple of goals each…nowt else will do.

      • thewildchimp

Well, those were must-wins from the start. I don’t know what Benitez will conjure up attacking-wise, but now it’s time for him to show he’s world-class.

      • Danimal

Ideally yes but if we draw with Southampton does that mean we’re above them or below them, with one game fewer remaining? I’d much rather do it your way, with two wins but we might have to live on our nerves a bit longer I’m afraid.

  • Danimal

Basically this clown Klopp wants a penalty every single time his team enters our penalty area. It was better pre-1990 when they had to sit in their dugouts where they belong, instead of now pacing up and down the touch line, berating the completely unnecessary fourth officials over every incident, for the benefit of the tv cameras. We did ok, four points from three tough fixtures. Move on.

    • Benmagpie

      Best comment on here today

      • Danimal

Thanks, I have my moments! Hope you’re staying calm with some alcohol nearby, like me. Cheers.

  • Mike

men against boys…were Atsu and Diame playing????

    • TheNutJob

      no

    • Coach Clagnut

Diame didn’t have a bad game overall but Atsu,he’s been worthless for weeks.

  • TheNutJob

feel sorry for the back 4 & the keeper they all played well

  • ToonTom

Let’s keep this simple, lads. Rafa is doing what he needs to do to get us safe. A 2-0 defeat at Liverpool will sadly have to do as part of that grand plan. If we’d attacked and lost 5-0 or 6-0, our goal difference would have been shafted and right now it could be an extra ‘point’ for us at the of the season. Let’s keep focused on staying up. I feel for the fans who travel but they aren’t stupid, they know exactly what’s going on.

    • mentalman

there’s no point worrying about gd if you don’t have the points to stay up

      • Andy Mac

        Good point, well made

      • Danimal

There is if we have the same points as Huddersfield or Stoke after 38 matches.

        • mentalman

how about instead of trying to defend a 2 goal deficit we try and score a goal thus making it a 1 goal deficit.

if we finish on the same points as the teams you mention and the same gd we are going down due to the goals scored factor

          • Danimal

Even for us, it will be pretty remarkable if we end up matching those two teams’ GD. Or to put it another way, for such a huge GD swing to occur, we’d probably have to be about ten points below them anyway.

  • mentalman

I’ve given myself a bald spot from scratching my head wondering how atsu played the whole game

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Half the team weren`t at the races today, it needs sorting for next week

    • mentalman

its happened nearly every game and the ones where everyone turns up we’ve won

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        very true

    • Danimal

I think they put a good shift in. When there’s no real outlet up front it’s always going to be damage limitation. On another day could have been 4-0 or if Diame’s shot went in, who knows. I think we preserved one or two players for next week.

  • Peaky Magpie

Mike Ashley will you just please go and f*ck off now…neebody likes yer, neebody wants yer here….so I’ll say it politely one more time F*CK OFF
    ASHLEY OUT
    ASHLEY OUT
    ASHLEY OUT

    • nufcslf

Couldn’t agree more. Not too many matches this season that haven’t had Cashley’s lack of investment written all over them.

  • Coach Clagnut

Man.Citeh are waltzing the league and have done from the off. This Liverpool team put 4 past them. Perspective folks, perspective.

    • Benmagpie

      Correct.

    • NUFCLX

Good point, we were playing a class team. Some of the clowns on this site think we should had attacked them with our world class midfielder, wingers and forwards but reality check, we bearly have any premier league class players never mind world class. I guess Rafa is to blame for that, if only he had signed Ronaldo for that 5 Mil instead of the Hos.

  • Leicester Mag

We may stop up but there’s something depressing about the inevitability of today. What seems half a life time ago I was at Anfield in 1994 to see Andy Cole / Rob Lee rip Liverpool apart. Little chance of that.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

the 94 team would have beaten Liverpool today

      • Leicester Mag

Call me a moaner but what the H has happened that means that we are brain washed into accepting competent mediocrity? We of course know the answer to that!

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

          you`re spot on

        • Leazes.

Ryder and Co, condition people into thinking a fifteen million pound player is a huge outlay, they totally bought into the ‘debt’ myth….why would they do that?

          • Leicester Mag

Clearly not for pride or reputation. # Quislings

    • Danimal

I’m 48 next week so it is half a lifetime ago. Wasn’t there but remember it well.

  • Andy Mac

Ha ha ha ha ha brilliant strategy from Rafa. Pick, on the face of it, an outwardly offensive team and then get them to park the bus ! Win win 😃😃😃
