Top Newcastle goalscorer every Premier League season – Heading for a new record low?
The title of Top Newcastle Goalscorer is still a very open competition this season.
Which is about the best you can say about it.
There is every chance as it stands, that this season will see the lowest ever total of goals in the Premier League era, by any Newcastle seasonal top scorer.
At the moment, with 11 matches to go, this is how Newcastle United’s feeble 25 Premier League goals have been shared out:
3 Lascelles, Gayle
2 Clark, Perez, Atsu, Diame
1 Mitrovic, Hayden, Ritchie, Saivet, Murphy, Merino, Own goal
When you have a centre-back who is joint second highest and another centre-back at joint fourth highest, you know that scoring goals has been a bit of an issue.
To avoid being the stand alone lowest ever top Newcastle goalscorer in a Premier League season, somebody has to get six goals.
That would actually match the top scorer total in two of the previous 22 NUFC Premier League seasons.
They both actually occurred when Alan Shearer was at the club, he finished top scorer in the other eight seasons he was at St James Park but in 1997/98 and 2000/01, he missed a high number of games through injury.
In 1997/98 it was John Barnes with 6 Premier League goals, then Carl Cort and Nobby Solano shared the honour in 2000/01, Sir Bobby Robson’s first full season at Newcastle.
Andy Cole with 34 goals holds Newcastle’s Premier League season record, followed by Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer with 25 each in a single season.
In the Mike Ashley era, Demba Ba with 16 PL goals in 2011/12 is the highest, the next best being loan striker Loic Remy with 14 in 2013/14.
A refusal by Mike Ashley to properly invest in the key position in the team has been a major factor in two relegations already and the danger of making it three in nine PL seasons this time around.
When your top scorer after 27 games has 4 goals and was a £5m Stoke reserve brought in to be your first choice centre-forward, it isn’t hard to see where things could have gone potentially wrong.
Loan striker Islam Slimani will have a maximum of 10 games to potentially even still finish as top Newcastle goalscorer this season. If he does so then it will definitely make fans wonder even more what could have been possible if better quality players had been recruited last summer.
