Rafa Benitez was a happy and relieved man after the final whistle.

Newcastle competed all over the pitch against Man Utd but it was heart-stopping stuff in the final stages as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.

You know how it felt to be sitting/standing watching on as a fan, never mind being Rafa Benitez who we are all counting on to perform minor miracles this season.

Rafa described today as ‘an amazing effort’ and who would/could argue?

The Newcastle players really came together and gave it everything, no exaggeration to say that these 11 players couldn’t have done more to achieve the win.

Though with the quality Manchester United have, it was always going to need a bit of good fortune favouring the ‘brave’.

The last month has seen Mohammed Diame produce form we had never seen in the previous 18 months and Matt Ritchie & Jonjo Shelvey produced by far their best displays of the season.

All three key to today’s win and isn’t it just great when a plan comes together.

Rafa Benitez:

“The win gives us confidence for the rest of the season.

“My message before the game was very clear.

“We knew Huddersfield had won, we needed to carry on and do our job, and still we have 11 games to play and we have to play with the same team spirit.

“When you play a top side like Manchester United you know every ball is important because if you make a mistake they will punish you.

“You have to work like we did today, it was an amazing effort.

“We were doing well for a while (going forward), then we were defending, but the teamwork and the way they fought for every ball…was amazing.

“I am really pleased for the players and the fans because we did it here at home.

“We have had some games where in the last five or 10 minutes where we have conceded, today we were a bit lucky in some of the shots they had…but still the team worked so hard and in this kind of game, anything can happen.

“We showed the character, passion and commitment that we must show for the rest of the season.”

“Martin Dubravka did well (on his debut), he was composed and gave confidence to the team.

“The rest of the team helped and all the players worked so hard, so to say the keeper was important is not fair for the others, everybody was important.

“Jonjo Shevey has quality on the ball – he is learning and if he can make the right decisions he is a very good player.

“Obviously we know that we are working really hard to play a game like this one.

“And to see this in front of our fans, and the way that we played, also our position (thirteenth) in the table now.

“All these things together have to be a boost for everyone.”

  • TheNutJob

All hail Rafa & the boys, apart from Mitro who wants him sacked
    😂😂😂

    • Geordiegiants

You can’t blame him really his tactics and football knowledge are shocking!

      • thewildchimp

Actually, he changed the tactics and we won…

        • Geordiegiants

He changes his tactics a lot more than people think. He plays tactics differently against different teams to suit, and he changed his tactics to suit against Manure.

    • And Jack Passback

      • Geordiegiants

He is talking about Mitros gotta start on here. 👍

  • No wonder Rafa wanted a proper keeper and more wingers! Just look at what massive impact Kenedy and now Dubravka have on our game!
Lejeune also proved why Rafa wanted him so bad – played like the deep holding midfielder we don’t have, sprayed some passes, making runs with the ball.
Why doesn’t SHELVEY play like that every week is what I want to know!
Where was THIS SHELVEY against Burnley and Palace? If our players can consistently play at 80% of this level till the end of the campaign we may stay in the Prem.

    • Down Under Mag

We just needed quality bringing in. Rafa seems to have things spot on with his new keeper after his first choice signings proved out of his depth. Apparently we do have a clause we Dubravka to buy as well so that’s a relief. Even if we can get Kenedy back on a years loan next season if we stay up then I would be happy, looks a good player so far and should only get better…and from Chelsea’s point of view it can’t hurt him to be around players who work their socks off. All eyes on Slimani now I guess and then hopefully we see a takeover and further rebuilding in the summer.

    • Jordan Peterson

Dismiss has been class the past 3 games. Different player

      • Mike D

        Dismiss is a great player.

        • Benmagpie

He used to be dismister till the operation

    • Andy Mac

A positive game plan makes a world of difference both to the players and the crowd. Must make this the norm at home.

  • Geordiegiants

3 points against Bournemouth and we are right out of the 💩💩💩.

    • We need 4 points from the Bournemouth and Southampton games and try to get 6 more from the rest and should be fine.

      • Peaky Magpie

WBA & Huddersfield at home should do it ??? Shouldn’t it…..

        • Jordan Peterson

We can’t lose any of those three. If we had Slimani and the new Pav at the start of the season we would already be safe

          • Peaky Magpie

Spot on,just watched Southampton on MOTD…they are poor..

          • thewildchimp

If they do go down, and that is what will probably happen, it would be awesome if we could poach Tadic. Priced probably around 15-20m, can play in different formations and in various positions, creative and would solve our #10 problem for a few years. Unlikely that Mike will cough up the dough, though…

    • Down Under Mag

Bournemouth, Southampton and Huddersfield are 3 massive games for us and our future and could see us fairly comfortable before we get to the crunch West Brom and Chelsea games to end the season…as long as we aren’t going into the last game needing a result I will be happy…otherwise that will be the most painful 90-min in history!

      • Andy Mac

Or at least since the last painful 90 minute match against Wet Spam ? Fatman does it deliberately.

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

There are 6 points to get in the next 5 games, any more would be a bonus

  • Peaky Magpie

Same line up next week please with Salami instead of Gayle or Perez…..

    • Mitros gotta start

Nee good doing it next week….we have 2 weeks off

      • Peaky Magpie

Do we…FA Cup I take it….should have Salami ready by then hopefully.

        • Geordiegiants

Don’t mention quality strikers. He will have a hissy fit!

      • Desree

See Mitro is tearing up the Championship

        • Mitros gotta start

I bet he gets more goals between now and the end of the season than any of our strikers

          • KRS1

I bet he gets more cards between now and the end of the season than any of our strikers.

          • KRS1

Mitro was sub again for Fulham. Do you go on their fan sites moaning, suggesting their manager should be sacked for not starting mitro?

          • Geordiegiants

Sorry about my post, I hadn’t read yours first😬.

          • KRS1

Don’t apologise mate! It’s good that he gets it from loads of us! Great minds think alike!

          • Geordiegiants

Better get yourself on friends of Fulham and start calling for Slavisa’s head, what a shocker Donkovitic on th bench in the second tier it’s a disgrace.

          • Mitros gotta start

Surprised he was even on the bench….according to rafa the liar he has a back injury

          • Damon Horner

that was 8 weeks ago…. Might be fit again… Or as fit as he can be

          • Geordiegiants

He has never been in better condition according to him.

          • pedrodelgardo

            Give over man……

          • Dillon Tovak

            Waaaa

          • Jordan Peterson

            Lol

          • Billy Ellwood

Well he proved his massive goal scoring ability in the Championship last season! I’m sure that he’ll do just as well this time.

          • pedrodelgardo

You should let it go mate, I don’t think things are going to work out between you and him.

          • Desree

He should manage 3 goals in the next 13 games.

      • Dillon Tovak

In training Jos will do great.

I joke, today is for celebration.

  • Peaky Magpie

Ryder is going to have to take some serious sedatives to come down from this…..

    • Damon Horner

5 reasons why we can win Premier league next year

      • Peaky Magpie

        🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂

  • steveS100

The one thing that is hard to deny is that all the Newcastle players give their all. There’s no-one who looks like he doesn’t care. They scrap, battle, run, chase, block, put their bodies in the way. Even if they aren’t all of the highest ability they deserve respect for that…

    • pedrodelgardo

You can’t blame players for not being Pele.

  • Phildene

One helluva superb game!! the lads never stopped wanting the ball and played brilliantly-so where have they all been these past months???? Ecstatic and emotional at the end :) I’ve got to say this that the Ref was pretty bad in parts as should’ve had a pen etc. But a win is a win and especially at home!

  • Peaky Magpie

    Just seen Smalling’s dive again….should get a ban…and isn’t Phil Jones a big gormless ugly fu**a …

    • Dillon Tovak

      Yes, yes he is.

    • anyobrien

      Yes

  • pedrodelgardo

Martin Dubravka – nowt wrong with Rob or Karl but the new keeper looks mint, confidence to be shouting at players including the Captain Fantastic on his debut – fills me with confidence……..

    • Dillon Tovak

      What….a……ledge

      • pedrodelgardo

        in……deed,,,,….1111

    • Peaky Magpie

Continues like that and he could nail that number one spot for many many years to come…

      • Jordan Peterson

        Hopefully

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Only two banners today but at least they were supportive of the club. The fans were behind the team today that makes all the difference the twelfth man for the first time this season keep it up.

    • Jordan Peterson

nevertheless NUFC should be able to do better than Leicester, Stoke and palaces reserve strikers! We won despite the handicap placed on the club by Mike Ashley.

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Wait until you see Silami play before you moan.

Who should we have got in?

    • anyobrien

      Belend alert

      • KRS1

        😂😂

    • love toon despite

The reason the crowd was behind the team is because the team finally gave us something to cheer. Not difficult!!!

      • Monkseaton Magpies

The crowd should behind them every week. Stood in the Leazes when the chanting started at quarter past two on a bad day now the fans support is negative banners a disgrace the lot of them.

        • love toon despite

Do you not think I haven’t been there at 2:15pm on bad days either???
Times have changed for me but hey ho we all suffer the same feat under our owner!!

          • Monkseaton Magpies

Need to ban the people with the negative banners for life.

  • Peaky Magpie

    Mark Chapman….The Wan*ers benchmark…..what a fu*king helmet…

  • Peaky Magpie

Well after a glorious day and a wonderful result there’s still one thing we can’t get away from….the fat lad is still a tw*t…..

  • Ram Kishore

The disallowed goal of Lukaku was indeed a clean goal… Relieved only after it was called as a push…
Sanchez positioning for a second and hesitation helped Florian to block it..
Those and few other moments were the tense ones..
Our new goalkeeper handled corners easily..

    • Danimal

A “clean goal”? As in you don’t think there was a foul? There were two fouls, it would have been a disgrace if that goal had been allowed…but not a surprise.

      • Ram Kishore

It’s not a clean goal but not a hard push either.. who cares..lol
If Antonio Valencia had been our player and if he had done that to a united player ..We can expect a yellow card and MOTD will be filled with blaming us..

        • Ben Jones

The disallowed goal of Lukaku was indeed a clean goal…

It’s not a clean goal but not a hard push either.. who cares..lol

Same person less than 2 hours apart….

          I kid you not!

          • Ram Kishore

Didn’t want a debate of that after a good night..
Just like those with Ghostrider and others… Wanted to waste no time arguing
            😁

  • thewildchimp

I hope a few will now realise that our lads have the required quality – they just needed a different system (a slower possession game) and a good crowd behind them.

    • Soldier

No they haven`t, if they had the required quality they wouldnt be 2 points off a relegation spot or winning 1 home match 113 days. a great win yesterday but to say we have the quality is pure fantasy.

      • kingfisher

        Spot on Soldier.👍👍👍

      • thewildchimp

Have you actually considered anything I typed, before commenting? They played in a medium to slow possession system, instead of a regular “skip-the-middle” counterattacking system in which they’ve played so far. They couldn’t beat Burnley and Palace but they’ve beaten ManU without any major hiccups. The same manager, the same players, the same old ground where we can’t get continuous good results during the last season and a half. What changed? Tactics.

Benitez is a world class manager, but for once he had confidence in the lads and it paid off. That’s all there is to it.

    • Geordiegiants

We have one or two more decent players, and the rest all played above their usual standard today.

  • TheNutJob

Rafa should take the boys on a short break to Beni, have a few cervezas.
chill out and watch the coffin dodgers wiz by at 80 mph on their mobility scooters

    😎😎😎

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

That Diame lad who arrived on Jan 1st is great

  • kingfisher

If you look at the stats from yesterday, the neutral observer would think we were the away team. But perhaps even more important than the three points, is the result should (?) give us confidence to believe we can pick up enough points and kick on from now. This result should prove to be a pivotal moment in the great fight for survival 😁

It was my birthday as well and sat next to my son we shared the unique feeling that beating man yoo at home can give you. I also reckon the big fella up stairs was giving young Frankie a chance to finally smile again as well. In the words of bono it was a beautiful day!!
