Wednesday night sees Newcastle United’s young stars in action, competing in the FA Youth Cup.

It is at the fifth round stage (last 16) and the NUFC Academy players are going for what would be a remarkable 11th away win in a row in the competititon.

Newcastle have won the FA Youth Cup twice before.

In 1962 the likes of Bobby Moncur and David Craig helped lead NUFC to lift the trophy, whilst Paul Gascoigne was the big inspiration in the 1985 triumph.

Tonight it is an away game at Norwich with a 7pm start, with the tie decided on the night with extra time and penalties if necessary.

Newcastle United (kind of) know their route to the final already, with the other rounds pre-drawn as well.

Victory against the Canaries would see Newcastle then play either Bury or Birmingham on Tyneside.

The semi-final is a two-legged affair and that would see one of Plymouth, Fulham, Chelsea or Spurs, in opposition. Newcastle at home in the first leg, if reaching the last four.

Best of luck to the Newcastle team tonight and if you do happen to be in the area, get along to Carrow Road for the 7pm kick-off and support the lads.

A couple of seasons in a row our route to the final was blocked by Chelsea who have won the cup several seasons in a row. Remember going to Derby County away when Armstrong got the winner and Woodman kept us alive. However it was Chelsea up next .

Strange how results changed for all academy teams when Beardsley was suspended. Maybe time for changes around reserves under 21s youth teams etc

    • Wor Lass

I doubt it`s as simple as that – the U23`s seemed to have improved before he was suspended.

lets hope we do get a good run and like 1985 some of these lads end up in the first team , I don’t think it will be such a high proportion that make it though due to the change in overseas players from then, nut yeah I agree it seems the u23’s have made vast improvements since Beardsley was suspended
lets face it their run last year did everything possible to get him sacked before they took this next step and made it official
why have the club not completed their review on Beardsley ? I know they have extended this to include others but that does not have an impact on his particular case.

He ignored the EFL Championship Cup, so hope this is the one that makes Ashley keep his promise and leave after he’s delivered a trophy.

(Oops, sorry – did I say ‘Ashley’ and ‘keep promise’ in the same sentence?)

You did and you know it’s not gonna happen, unfortunately…
