Newcastle United 1 Manchester United 0 – Sunday 11 February 2018 2.15pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle pulling off a brilliant win against the odds.

The three points taking Rafa Benitez’ team out of the bottom three and up to 13th place in the table, although only two points above the drop zone.

Kevin Christie:

“Classic Rafa today.

“That’s the performance he’s been looking for all season. Huge confidence booster.

“Everyone put in a solid shift but Shelvey was immense – by far his best ever game for us.

“Dubravka looks a great addition. Looked very composed and made some vital saves.

“We rode our luck but got what we deserved in the end.

“Fought so hard for the win, would have been heart-breaking to not see it out.

“Well done to Rafa and all the lads today. HWTL!”

Jamie Smith:

“Absolutely brilliant!!!!

“We don’t get days like this very often but it all feels worth it when they arrive.

“Shelvey and Diame were magnificent, making Pogba look rubbish and a struggle to choose between them for Motm, although Dummett, Lascelles, Lejeune and Ritchie all in the mix.

“Terrific team performance and perhaps an indication of what we’re capable of if people play to their full potential.

“Hopefully we can kick on from this and banish any relegation fears, this could even be what you’d call our “Manchestanbul” if you were a bit of a tragic case.

“Even if not, beating Man Utd is brilliant enough in itself. Lovely stuff.”

Nat Seaton:

“Where did that performance come from?!?!

“ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

“All put a shift in today but special mention for Diame and Shelvey in the middle and a great debut for Dubravaka.

“It’s only 3 points but to get them from Man United makes it oh so sweet…”

Paul Lyon:

“Fortiter Defendit Triumphans

“Newcastle United will never be defeated!

“Mo Diame colossal

“Get in!!”

Ben Cooper:

“Unbelievable.

“Never thought we had a chance today but some great performances and a bit of luck and what do you know.

“10 out of 10 defensively today,

“11 for the keeper.”

Jamie Swan:

“Fantastic win! Real gutsy performance and I am absolutely buzzing.

“Atmosphere was the best it’s been for donkeys. Long may it last.

“What a debut from the keeper and the two centre halves, Dummett and the centre midfielders absolutely bossed it.

“I’m no Shelvey fan but he was awesome today. Especially without the ball he was mint.

“Big pressure still, hope it’s the springboard.

“Everyone enjoy the moment. Happy Sunday.”

David Punton:

“Desire, effort and commitment – that’s what this team has and finally they got the rewards, and all against an expensively assembled Man U team. A wonderful win, fully deserved.

“We went into that game in the bottom three. Slimani nowhere to be seen and facing a galaxy of attacking talent.

“To emerge on the other side with three points, having played a brilliant game, is just the change of fortune we needed. The fact this was our first home PL win since last October says a lot. It’s been tough.

“Credit to Rafa and his players. He’s kept them going and finally they bagged a win, which could have been smooth had that stonewall penalty been awarded in the first half.

“We witnessed a storming debut from keeper Martin Dubravka too. Having a high quality custodian is not to be sniffed at.

“One win has altered the mood. Winning against Man United against all the odds is the most typical Newcastle United thing ever.”

Paul Patterson:

“Well done to everyone involved in today’s game.

“A joyous 90 minutes to be part of.

“HTL.”

Toon Bano:

“COME ON THEN YOU BEAUTY!!!!

“This result could change our entire season. Dropping into the bottom three before kick off was an absolute sickener.

“Not any more!!!

“What a result. What a performance.

“Jose now 7 games without a PL win on Tyneside.

“Never mind you like the Geordies…we love you!! Can we play you every week?!

“Howay the lads!!!!”

George Stainsby:

“Well, cover me in eggs and flour and bake me for forty minutes!

“If we build on this, birds will sing, unicorns will make baby unicorns, and we’ll be ok!

“Let’s take the confidence and get some consistency – in the right direction.”

  • Geordiegiants

    Very good performance!

    • Kneebotherm8

Sorry GG that was a superb performance by players, like for like with the opposition, should never have been at the races fckn HWTL…..

      • Wor Lass

        reads like you`ve started early!

        • Kneebotherm8

          Fckn sure mate…..

      • Geordiegiants

I wonder if people still think we didn’t need a new keeper?

        • Kneebotherm8

He looked a class above what we’ve got.

          • Geordiegiants

Very commanding in the box. Both Elliot and Darlow lack that confidence.

  • TheFatController

If the fixture computer hadn’t doubled up Man City H&A we’d be a form team now …

  • Wor Lass

Just watched the match after being out for the day – well worth the wait! Jonjo showed what he`s capable of today and i`m not just talking about his passing, which is expected. What a shift he put in. Dubravka was outstanding – he`s going to be a real steadying influence at the back – and Lascelles was his usual immense self. All the lads, without exception, grafted for every minute of that game. Rafa must be delighted. I`m sure he`ll be writing to Anita lick up the Hoop, mitros gotta start and Ghost rider personally to thank them for all their advice.

And fair dibs to Jose for his words after the match. I`ve never seen an opposition manager so pleased for us after being beaten!

I wasn`t too bothered about the “United” thing but I was heartily sick of hearing it by the end of that game!!

    • TheNutJob

Jonjo looked like a top international today & he could be if he puts his mind to it.

      • Geordiegiants

He could if he played like that every week, but if he did he wouldn’t be here long.

        • TheNutJob

Fatty would sell him, he`d sell the new keeper as well if there were a few shillings in it for him

          • Geordiegiants

            Anyone!

    • Wor Lass

I forgot SloMo in the role of honour. Another great performance by him.

      • Geordiegiants

He is like a new signing. I know that’s an old Pinocchio saying, but he is like a totally different player.

    • mentalman

its amazing how well they can play when they start a few games alongside the same player

  • Wezza147

Amazing team performance and thoroughly deserved! Shelvey and Diame were immense.
Dubravka! Have you ever seen a better debut? Over the moon Witt the result!
Where are the Man Utd trolls at now?

    • Kneebotherm8

We shocked the sht oot of them……and me as well to be fair…..HWTFL….

    • gallowgate26

They were giving in large through town with ‘cheer up Alan Shearer’ before the game. Went a bit quiet after 70 mins though. :P

  • TheFatController

Presume Pawson relieved that penalty and red card bottling didn’t affect the result ….

    • Mitros gotta start

We would probably have missed it anyway

      • TheNutJob

        😂😂😂😂

      • Wor Lass

If he`d brought the Hoss on to take it!

      • TheFatController

Harsh, as Ritchie puts them away. Only Joselu and Mitro I can recall missing penalties in the last year when Ritchie’s not been in the 11…

        • Geordiegiants

          Tweedle dumb and tweedle Dee.

    • Wor Lass

      Red card for …?

      • Geordiegiants

Foul on Dwight on the corner of the box was a blatant penalty.

        • Wor Lass

Yeah but not a red card. I thought the ref made some poor decisions (or lack of them) today.

          • Dingus

Earlier this season, Mane was sent off for a high foot. It was blatantly unintentional but he hit the Man City keeper in the head. The justification for his sending off was that, although he only had his eyes on the ball, a high foot is dangerous and in this case provided contact to a player’s head. That is an accurate description of what happened today with Valencia and Atsu. Based on that definition of dangerous play, Valencia should have seen red. Luckily for him, he plays for “Uniiiited” and the Referee’s Association wouldn’t dream of sending off a Manchester United player against the deluded Geordies

          • TheFatController

Luckily for him, I think Atsu’s height saved him. But joking aside I agree yes.

          • Dingus

Actually, that’s a fair point. He’d only have hit Crouch on the knee

          • Wor Lass

Fair comment. He could hardly have complained if he`d been sent off.

          • Dingus

I’d like to add, I don’t think Mane should have been sent off. But the rules are the rules and consistency should be a given

          • Geordiegiants

If that was the case every corner there would be a penalty with shirt holding.

        • TheNutJob

i would have red carded Valencia although he isn`t a dirty player that kick on Atsu was dangerous to say the least

          • Wor Lass

It was dangerous but not intentional. He`s a big unit, though – I wouldn“t fancy a kick in the chops from him.

        • TheFatController

2 more pints and I’ll have Ritchie onside first half. In fact, I’m calling it level from now on. Robbed. What luck Jose?

      • TheFatController

I know this may shock you, but I’m just being very partisan.

Stone wall pen. Stone wall red card. 1-0 the mighty magpies. pawson should be struck off and investigated for brown envelope bribes.

NB – Some of the above I may be exaggerating for effect. The views of the writer are IPA-fuelled.

        • Wor Lass

          And why not!

      • BenMagpie

Atzus kick in the head. If Shelvey had done he would have been off.

        • BenMagpie

          ‘it’

        • Wor Lass

That is definitely true. If Perez had done it he would have broken his neck – his own that is.

    • Martin Rooney

A red card all day, he then got two very good crosses in when they were in our box for the last five minutes. Reminded me of Ivanovic kicking an upright mitro in the head, immediatly apologising to him but more so the ref, he then knocked the ball in for chelsea to equalise. Sickner, i thought that was gona repeat itself today.

  • Mitros gotta start

Great win….great performance…great atmosphere…great debut…great 3 points…just need to play like that against the burnleys, evertons and bournmouths and we will be fine.

    • Geordiegiants

We can’t play like that every week the tactics and managers decisions were shocking. Bring back Donkovitic!

      • Damon Horner

They played like a team sapped of confidence who were disgusted by their control freak manager today! Poor Mitro still isn’t getting a start

        • Geordiegiants

I know that Rafa is a right liar isn’t he?

    • Wor Lass

      Has Rafa`s letter arrived yet?

  • TheNutJob

Jose had to sub one of the best footballers in the world as he was getting nowhere against SloMo & Jonjo

    • Wor Lass

That`s true enough but he was injured. Mind, who cares?

      • TheNutJob

he could have been kidding, ego`s do strange things to superstars

  • Rob

Where’s ghost rider and the anti Benitez trolls tonight. Master class and agree with Mourinho we played like animals.

    • Geordiegiants

Mackems got to start is on shooting his gob off.

      • molend

To be serious for a minute, can I use this sentence, kidder? I’m a professional academic linguist and it illustrates a number of very important points. Obviously I’ll attribute it to you. Let me say again, I’m serious about this, I’m not winding you up.

        • Geordiegiants

          We aye 👍

          • molend

You see, a fellow called Chomsky wrote that ‘Colorless green ideas sleep furiously’ is grammatically correct, but meaningless. Now your sentence is, I think, going to prove ‘meaningless’ to anybody who doesn’t know the background.

          • Geordiegiants

            Ha ha, I love it!

          • Rich Lawson

I like your post, but for some reason it reminds me of Philip.K.Dick’s ”Do androids dream of electric sheep” ?

        • Gareth Marshall

Well you could start by explaining what the chuff it means!!!

          • molend

Mitrosgotostart is on this thread shouting his mouth off

    • TheFatController

2 weeks in strait jackets after that. Took 5 nurses to hold them down and the doc to sedate them. Allegedly.

    • gallowgate26

In hiding for 2 weeks :)

    • Big Al 1967

Ghost Rider will be on soon claiming the reason we won is down to the fact that there was no Anti-Ashley chants/banners today. He will give absolutely no credit to the lads and Rafa.

      • Ben Jones

Be fair and give them a chance to respond for themselves , I’m sure the no anti-Ashley chants and banners and the result is a coincidence

        • Big Al 1967

Sorry but my sarcasm clearly has not come across well in written format and would respectively suggest you read some of his/her posts to see that they are a troll who describes NUFC as ‘you’ and not ‘us’ a bit like yourself earlier today!

          • Ben Jones

Yes because fans are not a borg collective , the ‘you’ is merely a reference to a another fans opposing views . Have you seen the amount of times these posters get abuse? Called trolls or mackems or mancs or the same person etc etc etc . Is there any wonder a distancing effect works both ways…

          • Big Al 1967

Of course that’s what you meant when you used ‘you’. However put quite simply if the likes of Ghostrider, Clarko, Monkseaton Mag, Fleckman et al do not like the replies to the posts they do submit themselves or the ‘abuse’ you say they receive is too much for them to take they can easily stop…..unless they are being told to submit it

          • Ben Jones

The not liking of the replies and the can easily stop works both ways . The ‘abuse’ is dealt in the classic ad hominem fashion rather than being met with mature debate . ‘Don’t listen to him guys he’s…[enter ad hominem here]…

Anyhow . Enjoy the rest of the night . Good result & much needed boost for all us fans :)

          • Big Al 1967

All I will say Ben is don’t get in a ‘debate’ with them then you will find out exactly why 95% of people on here have the same opinion of them. Anywoo HWTL!!

          • Cockneytrev

Ben Jones is a troll as well,, they’re all one in the same or a couple of people writing,,,,,,
            sad sad wankers,,,

          • Ben Jones

Be fair . I said previously that if you think that then you should block me as you’re irrelevant . Don’t put yourself through this self imposed torture

          • Big Al 1967

I know, I just like to try and catch them out and wind them up like they try to do with us. He’s the thing though… he was replying to my last post and immediately stopped when you posted he was a troll!! I wonder why??

          • Cockneytrev

            Hahaha,, yep strange that????

          • anyobrien
          • Ben Jones

            Ooooh you’re hard

          • anyobrien

            It’s been mentioned before.

          • Ben Jones

When you rub up too close to the lads at the match?

          • anyobrien

Yes I’m homosexual, no big deal tbh.

          • Ben Jones

And there was no implication there ought to be(a big deal) in my post .

            Enjoy

          • anyobrien

            Chin chinxxx

  • molend

To be honest, me bonny bairns, I think this was written in the stars. But, still a great performance, great effort, great tactics and an immense result. Now, if you’ll forgive me, I’m off for a session.

    • Geordiegiants

      Enjoy Bonny lad. 🍻

      • molend

If aa remember owt, aa’ll let ye knaa.

    • Peaky Magpie

Me as well mate and it’s snowing like hell so I might have to stay in the boozer overnight…it’s 500 yards away and the missus cannot expect me to walk home in a blizzard….it’ll be full of Stoke fans as well….😳😳

      • molend

Sorry, but I’m already a bit befuddled. Why would a blizzard be full of Stoke fans?

        • Peaky Magpie

😂😂 see what you mean..now where’s that edit button.

          • molend

edit button? Wasn’t he a racing driver. Does your missus know?

          • Wor Lass

Lol – Are you Rich Lawson in disguise?

          • molend

Do you claim the 5 pound reward?

          • Wor Lass

Ha ha – I remember looking out for that guy on the front at Whitley Bay!

          • molend

Well, I’m easier to spot.I went to a shop and the lass gave me a bag which says ‘Save the Planet. So I went to another shop and had something added. If ever you’re in Bulgaria or Greece and you see somebody toting a bag that says ‘Save the Planet- Clag a Mackem’, that’ll be me.

    • gallowgate26

Ah, if only it was that easy.. It took a slice of luck, our players ‘fighting like animals’ in Jose’s words, a Slovakian international goalkeeper, the will of the officials (which is always loaded towards Manure) and more lady luck to hang on at the end. I don’t think it’s ever just ‘written in the stars’. A discredit to our players and Rafa to say that.

  • robbersdog

Diame has come good, and I’m glad he’s at the club; and that’s something I never thought I’d ever say.

    • gallowgate26

I actually felt a bit for him when he was getting the boos at home and awful stick on here. I thought he was lazy but never that he was a bad player. So chuffed to see him finally hitting a bit of form and the praise he’s getting now.

      • steve

I’d be more likely to feel sorry for a a bad player than a lazy one. The training ground scrap seems to have given him boot up the ass.

    • Geordiegiants

You and 50,000 other fans and spectators.

    • StevieB

Anchorman is his game . Fair play to him

    • Peter Graham

Agree but how did it take so long to figure he was a defensive midfielder and not a no.10? Just asking.

  • gallowgate26

A day to enjoy, the irony?/reality?/coincidence? that our situation was looking bleak before kick off and dumped into the bottom three by results elsewhere this weekend. Then they pick today to finally win at home, against one of the top 10. (top 2). They dropped two points against Burnley, who lost at Swansea and no doubt have handed three points to most of our relegation rivals grrr!! Then take three points from Man U. This is why football is a ‘funny old game’. So hard to predict. Two weeks break then Slimani fit hopefully…. Maybe we can do it…

    • TheFatController

Yes. Nice to think our rivals were the ones cursing a big team letting them down, it was beginning to really annoy me the number of upsets and none from us..

  • Dingus

My man of the match; Rafael Benítez Maudes. You beautiful, beautiful man!

Not taking anything away from Shelvey, Lascelles, Diame or Dubravka! Or the rest of the players who were slightly outshone by these 4! Joselu was class when he came on too. What a day :)

    • Kneebotherm8

You’re right mate we got right at them and up their fckn noses …….keep it lads and we’ll be safe as hooses

      • BenMagpie

They don’t like it up ’em Captain Mainwaring!!!!

        • Kneebotherm8

          😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  • StevieB

    Penalty also

  • Damon Horner

I’ll single out Shelvey and Yedlin personally, both players have an aspect of their game which makes me nervous and they excelled beyond it today.

Dubravka got to everything as well, impressed by the lads confidence, not an easy game to debut in.

Pressing was good, forced mistakes and ensured no rhythm or cohesion.

Well done to all the lads today!

  • FairsCup69

First win against a team in the top half of the table. The whole mood has changed and we can turn Chelsea and Arsenal over at home on the strength of that performance.

But 5 wins away at Bournemouth and Watford and at home to Huddersfield, WBA and Soton will see us safe. Am I being too optimistic? Let me know……

    • Martin Rooney

nope should do that on this performance

    • molend

Couldn’t agree more. I’m sat here in Bulgaria with a friend of mine called Plum Brandy and somebody’s just let off a load of fireworks. Usually they do this when a bairn’s born, but I think, in this case, it’s because they’ve just heard the result.

      • Rich Lawson

Brilliant, but are you sure your not sat in Fenham after dropping a tab of acid ?

    • Viru leckworth

See us safe? Could see us in Europe!

  • anyobrien

Ghostrider, Monkseaton mags, Bobby fuc you fuc you.

    • Megatron1505

And all the rest of your Manc mates.

  • Down Under Mag

So for the first time in a long time I thought I would save myself the trouble of staying up until stupid o’clock to watch a match that the result should have been inevitable in… and low and behold we actually win. I might stop watching the games live from now on – anything to help the cause :)
