Newcastle 1 Burnley 1  – Wednesday 31 January 2018 7.45pm

Darlow 6 – Don’t think he did an awful lot wrong but he doesn’t exactly ooze confidence between the sticks. Don’t think he came for a cross all night.

Yedlin 6 – Offered nothing going forward and wasn’t great defensively either.

Lascelles 7 – Struggled in the first hour but got his act together and chipped in with a captain’s goal.

Clark 6 – Both Clark and Lascelles were bullied by Barnes at times tonight. Clark especially was dragged all over the place at times.

Dummett 6 – The usual Paul Dummett tonight. Gives you a solid defensive display but doesn’t offer us enough going forward. Nonetheless, a welcomed addition back to the side from now til the end of the season.

Merino 7 – A cool and calm display, looked confident on the ball in the middle of the park and did his best to make things tick. I don’t think him and Shelvey work together as a combination and I prefer Merino to Shelvey.

Diame 9 – He was all over the place tonight! If we can get performances like that out of him from now til the end of the season he actually would be like a new signing! Apologies for using that phrase… I just hope tonight wasn’t a one-off

Kenedy 7 – Good debut! Looked dead after 60 minutes but I’d much rather he ran himself into the ground after an hour. A welcome boost to a very weak squad.

Perez 7 – Had something about him tonight. Pace, grit, determination. A much better performance from him tonight.

Atsu 5 – A poor performance from him. Also didn’t look his self fitness-wise. With Kenedy having a good performance, Murphy picking up form and Ritchie being a reliable player, his place will be under pressure for sure.

Joselu 5 – I’m not going to come on here after a game and slag him off. A missed penalty and an absolute sitter in the second half. the guy tries his best, he works his socks off, wins his fair share in the air. yes it’s not good enough but there’s been many a player walk through these gates who care a lot less than him.

Murphy 7 – Offered a lot going forward, fresh pace, but his final ball was lacking (apart from that one when he set Joselu up for the sitter!). I’d expect him to start at the weekend.

Ritchie N/A – Not on long enough.

Gayle N/A – Not on long enough.

Flags 10/10A strong message sent before the game. The right message too. Keep going, don’t give up because of one man. For anyone thinking about giving up, there’s a poignant example only 12 miles down the coast of what happens to a football club in which their fans have totally given up on the team. Keep going.

watched a different game from me with those marks, he`s either visually impaired or mentally impaired

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

      what would yours be?

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

nothing like yours that`s for sure.

      • hetonmag

Spotted him as well Jon for what it’s worth mate I thought your mark’s where pretty fair, maybe apart from Merino who needs strengthening up a bit.

  • JonMag

the Hoss 5, that`s 5 to many, he`s [email protected]@king useless as are half that team

  • robbersdog

The Joselu situation is like a joke without a punchline – it’s just confusing. He can’t hit a cow’s a*se with a banjo, and he can’t even score a f*cking penalty.

We need to fast-track Slimani into the side ASAP; and whilst he’s injured, Gayle should start. But no more Joselu; enough is enough.

  • Soldier

Man of the match Kenedy, we should have been out of sight but with our forwards missing chance after chance the writing was on the wall, as for Joselu i still can`t figure out how he starts

  • Monkseaton Magpies

A bit harsh marks on the defence as Burnley created very little and their centre forward fooled the ref all night so well done to them. In all honesty how we did not get four goals is beyond me. We are a far better side than Burnley and it showed last night. Kenedy was the best player on the pitch for an hour but Diame had his best game for the club and dominated mid field even once doing a Shelvey pass.
The flags nil out of ten a disgrace to Rafa and the team just when they need your help and support. Just creates unrest and gives the Southern press the chance to put the boot in.
Where were the good flags when we needed them for a very important game no where to be seen. It just brings shame on Newcastle when we are in a relegation battle and need your support disgraceful.

If you can`t see why we didn`t score 4 goals you are in a different world. Maybe an average prem team would have scored 4 against Burnley last night. We`ve got Joselu. nuff said. ps Flags 10/10.

    • TheNutJob

in 3 games now we`ve been caught out from set pieces and that`s down to the defenders

  • TheNutJob

the Hoss needs dropping, Slomo getting a 9, that`s a first as i thought kenedy was Motm, can`t agree with the marks for Mikel more a 5 for me & done at a set piece again, our defenders leaving 2 Burnley players alone on Karl bad, very bad

    • Rich Lawson

Slimani with just the one fit leg looks a better option than ”Hoss” against Palace, the penalty miss is unforgivable.I know we rarely get them, but do we have a nominated penalty taker ?

  • Philippines

    A fair assessment I think.

  • 1957

SloMo did better than most, but 9 seriously. That implies an almost perfect performance where he significantly influences the game and he didn’t. If Kenedy was a 7 then Diame was worth no more.

As for Hoss, he possibly doesn’t deserve all the criticism that comes his way, that should be firmly directed at the man who continues to select him, the saintly Rafa. Working hard and winning his fair share of headers (albeit rarely going to his own players) isn’t enough, Hoss’s primary job, a striker’s primary role is to score goals. Benitez seems to miss that point

He doesn’t do much but still gets selected. Why. Is it really just because he trains well, or does the fact he was a Benitez signing and a fellow countryman come into it.

    • YoungMag85

He covered every blade of grass, broke up play countless times (some even resulting in Newcastle counter attacks) and his distribution was superb. This was by far his best performance for the club. He hasn’t been the best since he signed but give credit where it’s due – easily our best player last night.

  • mentalman

can’t see how yedlin can get the same score as dummett, dummy was solid defensively and managed a few crosses into the box, yedlin did neither.

  • Hughie

Disagree with a couple of marks. Merino was poor– continually caught in possession and passing erratic. Why didn’t Shelvey come on? Atsu was shockingly bad repeatedly failing to beat the full back and missing a sitter–why wasn’t Murphy on from half time?-another error. Perez and Joselu are the weakest front 2 in the PL. Not the remotest chance of either scoring. Joselu not upto it and Perez overplays in the box and repeatedly loses the ball outside it. We needed far more than Kenedy and Slimani. Marks Merino 4, Perez 4, Atsu 2, Joselu 2. Kenedy and Diame were excellent, and the defence did OK.. Might just stay up, but I suspect too little too late and why take the risk– players were out there at reasonable fees. Again completely false economics.

    • Andy Mac

False economies, it’s the Fatman s way. Its in his DNA

  • fistsofsteel2

What’s with the the excuses for the fraud Joselu? How on earth Rafa even has him in the squad, yet alone first team, is beyond comprehension.

Why let the muppet take the first penalty we’ve had for a long time – it was obvious he’d miss……he’s absolutely woeful. We’d be better sticking a balloon on the pitch.

  • fistsofsteel2

How long before Kenedy falls victim to the NUFC curse and starts turning in non-entity performances like the rest of the over paid no marks.
