‘A message for the 50,000 Newcastle fans going on Sunday…’

I don’t know if the 50,000 Newcastle fans going to the game on Sunday will read this…but it would be great to get a message to them.

Support. The. Team.

We know they are going to lose the ball, pass back to the keeper, pass it to no one, miss at close range, choose the wrong shot, give them space on the ball…but we also know they’re going to run around a lot, track back, support each other, work together and occasionally slide a great pass, get on the end of a well-taken corner, put in a block off the line and, god-willing, even put the ball in the net.

We are not going to get confused any time soon with Real Madrid (they’re rubbish anyway at the minute) and yes, some players are definitely struggling at the Premier League level, but we’re okay.

Plenty of teams around Newcastle are worse, or have bigger problems, than we do.

I would love to see Slimani play a blinder in his first game for us, Kenedy and Diame continue with their good form, and see Merino and Ritchie back to their best. Bottom line is that whoever’s out there, is us.

If it’s Joselu up front on his own, suck it up! He’s got a job to do and I’ll hazard a guess that it won’t make him play any better if you sit their moaning, to whoever will listen, how terrible he is. Ditto if he misses.

Get behind him, make a chant, cheer when he’s on the ball (and I don’t mean ironically). He’ll do his job better, if you do your best job of being a Newcastle fan.

So between now and Sunday, pour your heart into loving the team. A win would be massive, every win now is massive, and we need to do everything we can to turn St. James Park into a fortress again.

Get on YouTube and watch Howay 5-0, or the 4-3 when Roy Keane tried/wanted to kill Shearer. Watch the great goals that Ritchie, Shelvey, Gayle, Atsu and Hayden scored last season. Remember that feeling of finally watching the toon and thinking at last: ‘Now THIS is more like it!’ after the gubbins McClaren was serving up with his overpaid shysters.

These are proper Newcastle players that want to be here.

If I was a Huddersfield fan I’d have watched my team lose five in a row.

If I was a Swansea fan I’d be looking at two of their best players (Bony and Fer) now crocked until the end of the season.

We are really not far from safety so we’ve got a lot to be positive about. If we win on Sunday we’ll have a lot more.

Like Bing Crosby once sang (almost), you’ve got to accentuate the positives, eliminate the negatives and don’t have a go if Yedlin gets out of position.

One more bit of motivation for you. Just imagine for one moment the sweet, sweet sound of a new chant. To the tune of Yellow Submarine. To be sung by fifty thousand:

“SUN’LUN’S GOING DOWN AND THE MAGS ARE STAYING UP!

MAGS ARE STAYING UP! MAGS ARE STAYING UP!!!

GOING DOOOOOWN STAYING UP!

GOING DO-OW-OWN STAYING UP!”
