Jamaal Lascelles, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in betting to make 2018 England World Cup Squad
Interesting to see the betting for who makes the final 2018 England World Cup squad.
The World Cup kicks off in Russia in only four months time and England have four friendlies to play before Gareth Southgate chooses his final 23 man squad for the finals.
England travel to play Holland on 23 March and then host Italy at Wembley on 27 March.
Then after the season ends, England play Nigeria at Wembley on 2 June, then Costa Rica at Elland Road on 7 June.
England kick-off the group stages in Russia when playing Tunisia on 18 June, then Panama on 24 June and Belgium the 28 June.
For any outside bets to stand a chance of making the final squad, you would fancy that barring serious injury problems for others, they would need to be involved in the squad chosen to play against Holland and Italy next month.
Jonjo Shelvey doesn’t feature in the betting at the moment (though the bookies would give you a price on anybody if you ask!), though he did show what he was capable of in the win over Manchester United on Sunday. After being so poor the rest of this season though, it looks all but impossible that he will be considered.
Dwight Gayle though does feature, though at 33/1 is a real outsider and would obviously have to do something remarkable to stand a chance, as well as any number of injuries elsewhere.
The interesting one for Newcastle fans is Jamaal Lascelles, who has been an absolute star this season.
However, since we last featured these 2018 England World Cup Squad prices in January, the Newcastle Captain has actually gone OUT in the betting to go to Russia, Lascelles was 14/1 but now 20/1.
Maybe worth a bet?
In the betting below, there appears to be seven other centre-backs rated more likely to go than Jamaal Lascelles, right from hot favourite John Stones at 1/8, to Brighton’s Lewis Dunk at 8/1.
I’m not that convinced by Stones and certainly the rest of them, from Gary Cahill downwards, I don’t think England have any great stars otherwise in the middle of defence (Even the Man Utd fans don’t seem to rate Smalling and Jones!).
As with most things in life, it is usually a lot to do with getting the opportunity, so all eyes on the squad Gareth Southgate names for the March friendlies.
As well as Gayle, Lascelles and the various centre-back options listed below, we have also picked out a number of former Newcastle players also in the betting.
