Interesting to see the betting for who makes the final 2018 England World Cup squad.

The World Cup kicks off in Russia in only four months time and England have four friendlies to play before Gareth Southgate chooses his final 23 man squad for the finals.

England travel to play Holland on 23 March and then host Italy at Wembley on 27 March.

Then after the season ends, England play Nigeria at Wembley on 2 June, then Costa Rica at Elland Road on 7 June.

England kick-off the group stages in Russia when playing Tunisia on 18 June, then Panama on 24 June and Belgium the 28 June.

For any outside bets to stand a chance of making the final squad, you would fancy that barring serious injury problems for others, they would need to be involved in the squad chosen to play against Holland and Italy next month.

Jonjo Shelvey doesn’t feature in the betting at the moment (though the bookies would give you a price on anybody if you ask!), though he did show what he was capable of in the win over Manchester United on Sunday. After being so poor the rest of this season though, it looks all but impossible that he will be considered.

Dwight Gayle though does feature, though at 33/1 is a real outsider and would obviously have to do something remarkable to stand a chance, as well as any number of injuries elsewhere.

The interesting one for Newcastle fans is Jamaal Lascelles, who has been an absolute star this season.

However, since we last featured these 2018 England World Cup Squad prices in January, the Newcastle Captain has actually gone OUT in the betting to go to Russia, Lascelles was 14/1 but now 20/1.

Maybe worth a bet?

In the betting below, there appears to be seven other centre-backs rated more likely to go than Jamaal Lascelles, right from hot favourite John Stones at 1/8, to Brighton’s Lewis Dunk at 8/1.

I’m not that convinced by Stones and certainly the rest of them, from Gary Cahill downwards, I don’t think England have any great stars otherwise in the middle of defence (Even the Man Utd fans don’t seem to rate Smalling and Jones!).

As with most things in life, it is usually a lot to do with getting the opportunity, so all eyes on the squad Gareth Southgate names for the March friendlies.

As well as Gayle, Lascelles and the various centre-back options listed below, we have also picked out a number of former Newcastle players also in the betting.

Lascelles should be ahead of those 2 clowns from Manchester,
his distribution isn`t the best but he`s the better defender,
anyway Mr Mike will flog him to Jose in the summer

        Tongue in cheek! 🤪

  • Dingus

Lascelles, given his form, committed style, his leadership and his relatively young age, should be on the plane ahead of Gary Cahill, let alone the 2 lads at Man Utd. All 3 of them have, for years, received big club favouritism and I fear that may continue. It’s been a pattern in every squad for years.

In the last 2 friendlies England played, Southgate went for 3 at the back. 2 ball players either side of a kind of linchpin. Lascelles is perfect for that central role, especially in a team which is a little dry in the leadership department. Along with Maguire and Stones, that could form the heart of England’s defence for 4 or 5 tournaments.

  • Albert Stubbins

Big J doesn’t have a chance. Too far north. Good news for us but very hard on Jamaal as he’s good enough that’s for sure.

  • TheNutJob

    The new Tv deals out

    • Dingus

And so, henceforth, 13th of February 2018 shall forever be remembered as the day the chubby one decided he’d never give up his egocentric dictatorship of NUFC.

Would be great to see some Newcastle inclusions at the World Cup. Give us something to cheer about in June. Hopefully couple that with Premiership survival.

  • CaptainCaveman

If he gets a call up then fat boy will no doubt cash in on him after the world cup.

  • Big Al 1967

Southgate’s selections will be very interesting as he has previously stated that he will only select players who are in good form and playing regularly for the clubs. If he sticks to that mantra the likes of Cahill and Keane are doubts and from previous comments he clearly does not fancy Smalling.
However this is the same man who picked Solanke who at the time had never started a game for Liverpool so who knows what he is thinking
Always thought he was up his own backside anyway!

  • thewildchimp

Shelvey isn’t good enough for the world stage. Too slow when on the ball, and I’m not talking about his running speed. The only reason he could be selected is to ping balls to Vardy in some odd poaching game. To get a sniff in the national team he’d also have to improve his defensive skills and learn to protect the ball better.

Gayle? What? Well, there was that guy who won a bet on Suarez biting someone the last time around, so anything is fair play, I’d say…

    • Wor Lass

Jonjo would have to play like he did on Sunday for about three years to get a sniff. He had his chance and wasn`t quite good enough against the stronger opposition but Sunday`s about the best I`ve ever seen him play so you never know.

      • thewildchimp

        Yeah, I completely agree.

  • GToon

So that’s lascelles sold this summer then. Bet Ashley can hardly wait.

  • Cockneytrev

Centre half and keeper are our two weakest positions,,,

  • Mxpx

not sure i follow the logic i don’t see what dwight gayle would offer England ahead of Kane Vardy Rashford Sturridge and the rest HOWEVER I can see that shelvey would offer englands midfield a passing range well beyond jake livermores ability who always seems to get a game i’m pretty confident that jamal lascelles is a better pick than anyone else that england can pick in that cb role too i’d rather we didn’t play john stones personally i think he’s a bit of a liability as a cb in the same way david luiz was both are better suited in defensive midfield positions i think lewis dunk has been excellent this season personally though and would be happy to see him next to lascelles left back couldn’t be simpler danny rose and right back is even more simple james perch and nathaniel clyne if perch gets injured

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

England are krap & so`s their manager
    💩💩💩💩

    • Wor Lass

Tell us what you really think! We looked better with the younger lads playing. This world cup should be used to gain tournament experience and the old guard need to go.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

Easy group, as soon as they meet a decent team they`ll be on the next plane back & the idiot they have as manager has a job for life
he`s a company man like shyte for brains Penfold

  • Wor Lass

I like the look of McGuire from the little I`ve seen of him. Stones could be good but tries to play too much and gets caught out. The rest are average and no better than Jamaal. I don`t think he`s quite the finished article yet but he wouldn`t back away from it.

  • Paul Busby

One thing NUFC needed was better leadership on the field. With Jamaal, we got that, and then some…

He might not be the best defender in the list… emphasis on the word might… but who exactly gives us the leadership in the England squad?

He should be in the team.

  • MadMag83

The England team is still picked on favourites, media hype and playing for the big 6. Lascelles has no chance of making it, likewise Shelvey and Gayle. We’re Lascelles to be a City/Man Utd/Liverpool/Spurs/Chelsea/Arsenal player, he’d be in the team already.

Can’t remember the last time we had a regular England starter at Newcastle, Owen?
