Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on the Crystal Palace v Newcastle controversial penalty.

Newcastle held a 1-0 lead after a very decent first half performance.

Then 10 minutes into the second half, Palace have the ball on the left and a high cross if put into the box.

It is too high for anybody to make contact and travels through to the opposite side of the pitch, only for….

To everybody’s surprise/amazement, whether at the game or watching on TV, the linesman then makes some very animated gestures and signals he believes there should be a penalty.

Dermot Gallagher has now given his verdict and says that the officials were correct in that TV replays did show an offence had been committed, meaning a penalty was a perfectly valid outcome, BUT that these incidents do not produce a penalty ‘week in, week out’, in the Premier League.

I would love to know if that eagle-eyed linesman has ever done something similar because it is a massive call for him to make and to be sure of himself, though the way he was strutting about he was clearly a man on a mission and enjoying being in the spotlight.

Just one of those things where letter of the law says it was correct but if for example such incidents were similarly treated on corners, then every other flag-kick would produce a penalty as players grab each other all the time.

Ciaran Clark shirt tug.

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Ciaran Clark tugs the shirt of Christian Benteke inside the area, and referee Andre Marriner gives Palace a penalty to equalise for 1-1.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“Without doubt, when you see it, Clark has a hold of his shirt, you can’t say he hasn’t.

“But what you could say is that this award is not in keeping with what you see week in, week out.”

  • Dillon Tovak

Standard, it would pain him to say Newcastle were done over.

  • Rich Lawson

Why is it correct for us and not most of the prem’ then, what goes on in the box now is nonsense, push or shove must be a penalty,no diving you say, come one FA,no touch in the box at all,are those not still the rules ?

  • Leazes.

Okay then right…. MOTD dedicated a conversation to this widely discriminatory application last night, the law allows referees to award penalties for shirt tugging but in effect rarely actually awards them.

What does Dermot have to say about the awarding of penalties in games featuring United? We have been awarded two penalties in the same games as opposition have been awarded twenty-two.

If a penalty is to be given in a game involving us why is there a likelihood that the opposition will get it at a percentage ratio of 10:1 (Ten to One).

MOTD2 presenters did not query the anomaly, and these are pundits who live in a world of statistics!

Over to you Mr Gallagher…. ‘why don’t United get their share of marginal calls?’

    • GToon

Exactly. In every single corner that is taken there is shirt pulling. We just need a linesman prepared to run onto the pitch like yesterday to give one to us.

    • Wor Lass

It could be in some sort of proportion to the amount of time we spend flapping around in our own box as opposed to the oppositions`!

    • Lofty

The only United they are bothered about get plenty of decisions Leazes…

      • Wor Lass

Yeah, spot on. If he sent that question in to MoTD, they`d start looking at Manure for certain!

        • Leazes.

          Ahh…. that’s the reason

  • Tino o

You could turn it around and ask why we weren’t given a free kick.

  • ghostrider

The bias is always the same.
We will get our turn to shine when the powers that be decide its our turn.
Like I’ve been saying for long enough. The postcode we reside under ensures be are conspired against.

    • Tomb

Except Swansea had a clear penalty against us not given

      • ghostrider

We are still discriminated against on the whole, which is the point. It’s not every ref. there are some that play a fair game…just not too many.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

it`s about time they sorted it with all the shirt pulling in the box, by the letter of the law it`s a penalty so let`s see the ref`s do their job & apply it to everyone.
    don`t hold your breath though.

    • Philippines

They could impregnate shirts with wires and make players wear wired gloves with a battery so that if there is contact, a buzzer and light go on, same as in fencing. It would be a bit like ‘pinball wizard’.

      • Mark Potter

Will they wear face masks and carry swords?

  • Cockneytrev

He also had a hold of clarks shirt,, clearly showed on the replays on MOD,,
The linesman is probably a parking warden,, he clearly enjoyed his moment of infamy,,,

    • Danimal

Yes he did, which put Clark at a disadvantage. One of their players is clearly shown shirt-pulling during the Shelvey incident too.

      • Mark Potter

And at a disadvantage at the moment the ball came over, so he couldn’t jump for the ball. The (mutual) shirt pulling was all before the cross came over.

There should be a sort of “interfering with play” rule, or common sense judgement from the ref. The cross wasn’t good. Even Shearer in his heyday couldn’t have risen high enough to make contact with the ball, never mind direct it on goal.

  • Peaky Magpie

Well this time next week the figures will be out for the new tv deals.Fatty will be rubbing his hands and saying “F*ck the Geordies, you know what I ain’t going nowhere now” £££££££££££££££…..

  • shellington

If we go down by a couple of points then it’s a massively costly decision. There has to be consistency, if players are getting away with these then why aren’t we? If some officials are turning a blind eye to these then quite clearly either the rules have to change or they do.

    • Tomb

We got away with a clear handball that should have been a pen for Swansea and one against Burnley that could easily have been given so we have had some decisions

  • Wor Lass

thought Mariner got quite a few decisions wrong on Sunday. As Leazes points out, we have had 2 pens awarded during a period when our opponents have had 22. I don`t know what the time period is but it`s quite a stat. I wouldn`t be surprised if sendings-off are along similar lines (there you go, Clarko!). I`m not big into conspiracy theories and this “the FA don`t like us” and “the southern press hate us” type of stuff but we do seem to carry more than our fair share of schite decisions – usually costly ones, at that. However, bad as referees can be, our forward line is worse at the mo – and that`s wht`ll send us down. What have we been screaming at the fat [email protected] since Demba Ba left?

Just had to copy and paste that one. I wasn`t sure if it was “Clarko” that triggered the alert but it turned out to be F00ka – I thought they were the same thing!

    • Andy Mac

Maybe we dont get as many penalties as other teams do because we dont have as many players in the box most of the time ? With one man up front Rafa isnt exactly Mr Adventurous ?

      • thewildchimp

        That too.

  • Down Under Mag

So he gets paid to say pretty much what every Newcastle fan has already said – It was technically a penalty but you never see them called as it happens multiple times a game, so yes…penalty, but a harsh one if it is because of inconsistent refereeing.
