I was amused to see Michael Owen predicting that Newcastle will get beat this weekend.

He joined others such as Paul Merson and Mark Lawrenson in forecasting a comfortable Crystal Palace win.

Newcastle may well get beat, we all know we don’t have a great team and every game is a challenge.

However, there are some matches that Newcastle are far more likely to not lose, or the Magpies may even win.

Here is the Premier League table, well the bottom nine anyway, before the weekend’s matches.

You (and Michael Owen, Merson, Lawrenson…) may find it interesting to know that the last time any of these teams above beat Newcastle, was five months ago.

Yes, 24 September 2017 saw Brighton edge a 1-0 home win over Newcastle.

In fact, in the entire season, of this bottom nine only promoted sides Brighton and Huddersfield have defeated Rafa’s team.

This is the astonishing record of Newcastle’s record against the other eight clubs in the bottom nine of the table:

Played 12 Won 6 Drawn 4 Lost 2 (22 points from possible 36)

In contrast, Newcastle’s record against the current top 11 clubs is:

Played 13 Won 0 Drawn 2 Lost 11 (2 points from possible 39)

I like to think Newcastle have a chance in any match they play but when I engage my brain, I have to accept that the facts/logic this season so far, tell me that Newcastle have very little chance against the better teams.

However, they DO have every chance of getting something from the poorer teams and Crystal Palace are one of those.

No matter what Michael Owen, Paul Merson or Mark Lawrenson might say.

Matches played so far by Newcastle against other clubs in current bottom nine of Premier League:

Huddersfield 1 Newcastle 0 (20 Aug 2017)

Newcastle 3 West Ham 0 (26 Aug 2017)

Swansea 0 Newcastle 1 (10 Sept 2017)

Newcastle 2 Stoke 1 (16 Sept 2017)

Brighton 1 Newcastle 0 (24 Sept 2017)

Southampton 2 Newcastle 2 (15 Oct 2017)

Newcastle 1 Crystal Palace 0 (21 Oct 2017)

West Brom 2 Newcastle 2 (28 Nov 2017)

West Ham 2 Newcastle 3 (23 Dec 2017)

Newcastle 0 Brighton 0  (30 Dec 2017)

Stoke 0 Newcastle 1 (1 Jan 2018)

Newcastle 1 Swansea 1 (13 Jan 2018)

It’s not that simple though as many things determine the outcome, such as the opposition putting the ball in our net.

      • Headless

It pretty much is that simple. We’ve conceded 35 goals this season. Of the “bottom 12”, only 2 teams have conceded less (both on 34) so our defending isn’t that bad.
Our problem is putting the ball in the net (6 of the 12 better than us, Palace level after their horrendous start to the season). And against Swansea and Burnley we could have been 3 up by half time if Rafa’s wish to get a credible striker in early had been granted by the FCB.

        • Big Al 1967

Exactly right. Rafa has been crying out for a proper goalscorer since the end of last season.
If we had a 15-20 goals a season man we would be sitting comfortably mid-table. However as Fatman would never sanction such an expense we are where we are as he continues to gamble with the Club’s future

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

^ this. Loic Remy netted 14 in 2014 and that was enough to put us in 10th.

        • Leazes.

I don’t disagree, it was facetious (tongue-in-cheek) response, did you really read that as being serious?

      • TheNutJob

        that`s complicating things

  • Tino o

Oh we’re playing palace? Here’s me thinking we were playing Barcelona listening to some of the rubbish talked by these lot. We will win tomorrow and the mighty palace will be accused of having an off day. Btw Burnley have equalised . 1-1 v Burnley terrible result!

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

getting rather tight at the bottom after today`s results, time for out lads to up their game tomorrow. i see the Pard`s effect has kicked in at WBA.

    • steveS100

So tight at the bottom that if we win tomorrow we could go 11th !!

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

been to many if`s this season, tomorrow is our 26th must win game

        • Peaky Magpie

🤣🤣 I know it’s tight but WBA starting to look like the first team in the most serious trouble followed by Uddersfield.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            WBA well & truly Pardewed

          • Peaky Magpie

Yup,they’ll be getting rid shortly to let Geordie John steady the ship…or should I say sink it…

          • Kneebotherm8

            He’ll definitely scupper ’em….

  • Tino o

Mangala is having a great debut 😂

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      😂😂😂😂😂
Fat Sam 4-0 down at half time

      • Tino o

Scousers will have the sack allardice banners out soon already outstayed his welcome😂

      • Peaky Magpie

Hippoheed probably had £100 on that score at half time with BetVictor 🤣

  • Virsino

4 Teams on 24 Points, Newcastle with the best goal difference. That’s why Benitez is is a manager and Gary Nevill is not. Newcastle 0 – Man City 1 makes a whole lot of sense now.

    • Kneebotherm8

      It surely does..

    • ghostrider

Goal difference is fine if the premier league generally finishes up requiring it.
The problem is in the 25 years since it started there’s only been 5 of those years where teams stayed up on goal difference.

We should be having a real go for 90 minutes in all matches instead of trying to accept a low scoring defeat just to keep goal difference respectable.

      • Virsino

Point taken, but, in the 25 years since it started, never have stats frim previous seasons affected the outcome of any season

  • Kneebotherm8

If their scoreline predictions for us this season had been correct,we’d be 10 points adrift at the bottom by now…
