Demba Ba left Newcastle on 4 January 2013 to go and sit on Chelsea’s bench, 19 days later Yoan Gouffran arrived at St James Park from Bordeaux.

A bizarre transfer window seeing Newcastle lose their best striker but failing to replace him, instead bringing in players in five other positions, all the signings arriving from Ligue 1.

Five years later and Demba Ba & Yoan Gouffran have teamed up.

After being released by Newcastle in the summer, Gouffran signed up at Goztepe in July 2017.

The 31 January 2018 saw Demba Ba also join the Turkish club as a free agent.

Yoan Gouffran had already made 17 league appearances before this last weekend, making 12 starts and 5 sub appearances but scoring no goals and struggling to make any real impact.

All that changed on Saturday though, as Demba Ba and Yoan Gouffran were paired together for the first time.

Ba had made one brief sub appearance on the 5 February but Saturday saw him start as the main striker, Gouffran playing just in behind.

It is early days and I know Turkish league football isn’t the best – but the early signs of the partnership are very promising.

Watching the highlights below, Gouffran got an assist (though his ‘pass’ could have been a shot…) for Ba’s opening goal in the 23rd minute.

Then 12 minutes later and the Frenchman scored an excellent headed goal of his own, Gouffran’s first for the Turkish club who now lie seventh in the table.

Osmanlispor came back and brought the score to 2-2 in the second-half, before a very clever cheeky Gouffran backheel looked to have put Goztepe back in front, watching these highlights it is a puzzle why it was disallowed.

Goztepe eventually taking a 3-2 lead late on, only for the visitors to grab a draw in the fifth minute of injury time.

The footage shows Demba Ba looking a class act still, aged 32 and recovered from that serious leg break that could have ended his career.

He looks in great shape considering this was his first competitive start since July 2016 when he got that horrific injury playing for Shanghai Shenhua against Shanghai SIPG.

Looks/sounds a canny atmosphere as well, though not sure why there is nobody behind the goal to the right.

In 12 days time, Goztepe are home to Sivasspor, which will mean Ba and Gouffran taking on Henri Saivet, who has been restricted to a couple of substitute appearances since moving on loan from Newcastle in January

Another rags to riches story with the club falling from the very top league to amateur status in five years. Since then they’ve gradually returned to the top flight but their new ground was opened in 2016 with no fourth side. During the last two years they’ve put up the new stand and its now almost ready for use.

Class player, pleased to see him back from his awful leg break in China. I just wish he’d stayed for these last five years. Pardew playing him on the wing to accommodate Cisse was just ridiculous. The best CF the club has had since Shearer IMO. Although Loic Remy was close.

    • Mitros gotta start

Another stunning masterstroke by Pardspew….so glad he is west broms problem now

      • Geordiegiants

        He signed your hero.

        • Mitros gotta start

          No he never

          • Geordiegiants

Well he should of been sacked for not signing him!

It was Macca/Carr who signed Mitrovic

I stand corrected it was yes.

It worked out well till he threw his toys out the pram. Cisse was scoring a hatful and Ba was still doing a good job for the team out wide.. The team was winning. Then we moved Ba back into the middle and Cisse ended up playing out wide and things went down hill from there and the mercenary left us for Chelsea’s subs bench.

      • gallowgate26

Yes and Cisse was a very inconsistent goalscorer indeed after those first few months. Ba has scored goals at every club he’s signed for and in every season. Far superior.

He’d still be our best player atm

Glad Ba has recovered from that very bad leg break, he said he would return and has done so. Would he be better than Hoss now, just hypothetical, cannot help wondering? Ba looked like he was still quite mobile and obviously has not lost his eye for goal..Never going to happen but cannot help wondering if Rafa could have found a use for him??? At least he lasted longer than Sturridge LOL’s and that was after a bad leg break, and being Pardewed. I never blamed him for taking his chance at Chelsea as Pardew was such a useless manager who is being found out AGAIN.

I always liked Gouff. When he came he looked good playing as a “secondary striker” and it sounds like that`s what he was doing in this game. I don`t like the term “Pardewed” because it`s a lazy way of explaining why someone is krap but he sacrificed that game to plough up and down the left wing as an extra defender for most of his time here so maybe he was Pardewed. But he never complained and he never stopped trying. Good luck to him.
