Sky Sports report that they believe the Amanda Staveley bid to buy Newcastle United can still succeed.

However, for this to happen, two important boxes need to be ticked.

Keith Downie (Sky Sports reporter covering NUFC) says that his understanding is that first of all Newcastle need to survive the drop to the Championship.

This then needs to be followed by the Amanda Staveley led bidders to increase their offer to what Mike Ashley wants.

Sky Sports believing that figure to be the £300m which has been regularly reported previously.

Indeed, Downie thinks there was every chance of the deal going through before Christmas, only for matters on the pitch making that all but impossible.

A poor run of results, only one point from 27, made relegation a very real possibility.

Leading to a stand-off which had no chance of being resolved…

Amanda Staveley only willing to pay £250m unless the offer included compensation clauses in the event of relegation this season, Mike Ashley only willing to accept £300m without any clauses.

For all the smoke and  mirrors from both sides, especially Ashley’s, Keith Downie believes that a deal can happen once Premier League survival is confirmed, as nothing has changed and Mike Ashley still wants to sell.

As for the repercussions of no takeover happening, the Sky Sports man’s understanding is that it would be very unlikely that Rafa Benitez would be willing to stay.

Keith Downie of Sky Sports:

“My opinion is that it (Amanda Staveley takeover) is dead until the end of the season – or at least until Newcastle’s fate is sealed one way or another regarding which division they will be playing in next season. That’s pretty much the reason it fell through in the first place.

“If Newcastle get relegated, then the club is worth significantly less than it would be in the Premier League. So when they won a few games in a row earlier this season, the value of the club increased. But when they went on a run without winning – as they did between November and December – then the value of the club decreased because relegation looked more likely.

“I think that’s why there was such a delay over the deal and why there was a discrepancy between Mike Ashley’s valuation of the club and Staveley’s. I can’t see her buying the club in the Championship. She wants to be in charge of a Premier League club. So that’s why her bids were not quite at the level that Ashley wanted.

“She wanted to insert relegation clauses in the event that they went down, so she would then be owed some money back by Ashley. But being the businessman that he is, Ashley wanted a straight sale with no clauses. He would have taken instalments, but he didn’t want any caveats or clauses.

“If Newcastle had been sitting in the top 10 and looking safe, I think the sale would have had a real chance of going through before Christmas. They were in a healthy position when the club was put up for sale in October, but by the time December came around, they were struggling. With that, the value and attractiveness of the club went down.

“What I do think, though, knowing Ashley and the way he operates, is that she will have to increase her current bid. From what I’ve been told by certain people involved, he is looking for around £300m, but her last bid fell around £50m short of that.

“I cannot see the sale going through unless she increases it. From Ashley’s perspective, Newcastle are self-sufficient. He wants to sell, he has had enough of it after 10 years, but they are not losing money, so he is not in a rush. He still gets the free advertising for Sports Direct every time they play.”

What are the club’s chances of keeping Benitez?

“My prediction is that if the takeover doesn’t happen, Newcastle will struggle to keep hold of Benitez. He has other suitors elsewhere, other clubs who know what he is capable of. He came to Newcastle wanting to improve the team, to get them into the top half of the table and compete for honours.

“He knows he is not going to do that with the current squad, and the only way he can improve that squad is if the takeover happens and there’s someone at the top of the club who is willing to put money into it to progress it.

“I can see the takeover being revived at the end of the season, but only if Newcastle are able to stay up and Staveley increases her bid.”

  • Leazes.

    fleckman and Chris Holte?

Hey Where did the clubs ‘debt’ disappear to….

    London: 10.30 AM Yesterday

…..“I was taking to him for about 5 minutes and, to be fair, he seemed like a nice guy. He was very open about it all.

“He talked about any takeover deal as being ‘straight forward’ as the club is in no debt. He compared it to getting a standard mortgage’

…that’s right it was nonsense from the start….. it was always going to be incorporated in the sale because it was the clubs asset…. the stadium rebuild, and a few mortgage payments on players.

You have done a spiffing job confusing the issues of finance surrounding this malevolent oaf for ten years… everyone with an ounce of sense could see what he’d done.

No debt…straightforward sale minus the land he’s stripped to cripple future development!

    • Guest 2

Well, a straightforward sale once 144 million of debt is repaid!

      • Leazes.

        Its incorporated, didn’t I say that?… yes I did!

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

If the price is £300m, £144m is the repayment of the loan and £166m is the shares.

I’ve explained the figures to you many times Sofa’ surely you understand by now?

          • mactoon

I’m surprised he would accept such a low profit margin

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I’m only giving an example for Leazes’ who’s a little ‘touched’ as they say.

However, you are right, the price being put about is low. £250m represents a £25m loss to Ashley and people are surprised that he did’t accept. If we stay up, I think someone is going to get us extremely cheap, even at £350m but my guess is he’ll be taking less.

          • mactoon

If Staveley had taken a gamble and offered £300 pre January when we were in a better league position and could have gotten players in Jan window I think it could have gone through. Now that chance has gone and I think she is going to prove she has the funds and increase her bid

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

When there are a number of investors under an umbrella, to change the offer is not easy.

I also wonder if we would be better off in the January window doing what we did.

          • HarryHype59

She can of course just wait until May and offer £100m, once we are back in the Championship!

          • grantham mag

25m bet he has lost more in one night at his favourite casino.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            Did he?

          • HarryHype59

The “loan” was actually part of the price Ashley paid to own the club. It was only notional as it is owed to Mike Ashley and not to external creditors!

Despite pulling in over £400m in TV money, the club has struggled on the pitch leading to two and possibly three relegations.

This obviously affects the value of the club and explains why Ashley will be lucky to make a relatively small profit even if by some miracle relegation can be avoided again.

If we are relegated again, then his £250m investment will have halved in value!

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

We all know he over-paid for the club. However, football has moved on in terms of money.

Again, you cheeky get, I was the one who explained the debt to you! yes, it’s far better payable to Ashley than external creditors but the price for the club is the price to remove Ashley from the club, the price repays the loan first and anything left is for the shares.

If we go down, it’s up to Ashley in terms of strategy. He either allows money to be spent to get back up OR he liquidate the player assets, pays back his loan and starts again.

          • Toonarden

Sick of hearing that Ashley wouldn’t get any profit. How about ten years of free advertising for S**t Direct for starters? Surely that’s got to be worth £30-50m of any organisation’s money?
Hell’s sake don’t let’s get the handkerchief out for our Controller. The man’s a leech and a parasite.

          • mactoon

You mis understand my comment. I am surprised that he would accept such a low profit margin NOT because I think he deserves it, but because I know what he is like. He deserves NOTHING from NUFC but the type of businessman he is means he would EXPECT a big profit from the sale.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

In the current exposure of premier league football, it’s worth about £3m a year but that’s not to say it was worth that much for the 11 years he’ll have had us.

The other point (that seems to be totally ignored by most) is that he owns 55% of Sports Direct so of that £3m a year, he only get’s the benefit of just over £1.5m. He’d have been better off charging interest.

    • HarryHype59

The so called “debt” was only a notional figure aimed at ring fencing Ashley’s investment!

  • ghostrider

I personally think Benitez should have been sacked Before January but I understand his wages are ridiculous so that is probably why he’s being kept, which could turn out to be a massive mistake by Ashley and another learning curve in terms of, past world class managers do not always guarantee present day success or ship steadying

As for Staveley and the crew she is canvassing for…they had their chance and blew it and we dodged a massive missile, never mind a bullet.

    Ashley’s not stupid.

    • Cashley out

Well I personally think your opinion should be disregarded as you are obviously in a sexual relationship with Cashley.

      • Jezza

He’s a wind up merchant. He has been trolling this site under multiple ID’s along with his brother for years, he works in a S****s D****t shop and is a season ticket holder at Old Trafford.

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

What are the other Id’s Jezza?

          How many do you have?

      • ghostrider

Then disregard it. But it doesn’t change it.

    • Fatwasp

Sacked? Get back to Penshaw kidder… you’re antics are neither subtle or welcome.

      • ghostrider

        Yep, sacked.
ow about some honesty from you. Let’s see what you have.
Tell me what managers wouldn’t have been sacked at this stage given the exact same set up as Benitez from when he came to present day.

Let’s take out any managers that are deemed world class just so we don’t go into the god like messiah status and scupper the answer in terms of skewing it.

Ok, over to you. Be honest.

        • Damon Horner

Considering the other promoted clubs have had as much of a rollercoaster season as us and both have retained their managers then the proof is there that teams in our situation would not have sacked their manager at this stage.

          Over to you troll.

          • ghostrider

I’m not interested in what other clubs do. Many have sacked their managers but what I said about us having a manager other than Benitez, That manager would be sacked, plus the fans would have been baying for blood.

        • Kneebotherm8

          He’s not the Messiah……he’s a very naughty boy …

    • YoungMag85

Sacked and replaced by who exactly?

      • ghostrider

There’s plenty of manager out there that can get a team to play football.
No need to pretend there’s no replacements capable of doing a better job than this literal bag of scrap.

        • YoungMag85

And yet you still haven’t named one…..

          • Jezza

He never can name one. He is just a wind up merchant and he is not a Newcastle supporter. He has been trolling this site for years under multiple ID’s. Best not to reply to his posts. Don’t give him the satisfaction.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            Jezza is lying again.

    • FatParosite

Ashley is well on for his third relegation. If that is not stupid the word needs redefining.

      • ghostrider

Benitez is well on for his second.
The first wasn’t entirely his fault, but still, he did relegate us and if Shearer can be dug at for failing with 8 games to go then Benitez has to take some flack for 10.

Or, we might escape it due to other teams being worse than us in the run in and saving our bacon.
The only way Rafa will save it on his own is if he plays 90 minutes worth of balanced football.
He has the chance now with Kenedy and Slimani, plus his select goalkeeper , Martin Dúbravka.
He’s got no excuses to make for not having a go.

      • HarryHype59

One relegation is careless, two is negligent, a third would be criminal incompetence!

    • pedrodelgardo

He is either stupid or taking the urine.

  • Guest 2

The club isn’t ‘self sufficient’ either, far from it. If the club isn’t in the PL then it requires additional funding just to run it.

It won’t stay in the PL without additional funding which would allow us to actually buy the quality of players required to keep us there.

Self sufficient to Ashley means nothing more than he sees no need whatsoever to provide any more money, nor to actually seek out additional commercial revenues which would bolster the finances.

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Which additional commercial revenues should we seek out. Perhaps the players could do a bit of window cleaning? Tarmacking drives after training?

  • Paul Busby

Let it go… she isnt taking over

  • Dillon Tovak

This is straight up speculative BS which works solely as an advert for Sky Sports coverage of their beloved man united coming to SJP.
This is not news nor an opinion piece.

    • Jonas

Agree. Like almost the entirety of ssn its just content, filler.

  • Paul Patterson

    ‘It is my opinion . . .’
The article should have stopped there.

  • robbersdog

So…the takeover will happen if we stay up and Staveley pays the price that Mike Ashley wants? But if it doesn’t happen, Rafa might leave?

And in other news, the Pope is Catholic.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

If we can survive this season there is no reason we cannot finish in the top eight next season. Having seen us against Burnley twice and Everton once no one can say they are superior sides to Newcastle it’s just a little bit of experience which has cost us dear. If we had the points our play deserved we would have been well clear by now. If we stop up Rafa will stay one more season regardless.

    • pedrodelgardo

If we had an owner who would buy appropriate strikers we would have the points our play deserves.

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Like Slimani? we’ve now got a forward line that can score goals.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

have we indeed, that remains to be seen.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

That is true of any transfer.

        • Keeganontherebound

You mean the one striker we managed to get in on loan at the last minute in January for the sole reason that Leicester refused to do business with West Ham? It hardly makes for an impressive track record of recruitment.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Most deals go through late, the ones that go through early are the ones that are not in demand.

          • HarryHype59

The one who was an 11th hour panic signing when Swansea beat Liverpool.

        • grantham mag

Don’t forget he is injured, so when will his first game be.

        • HarryHype59

Not 100% convinced on that one!

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            You never will be

          • HarryHype59

The forward line is woefully inadequate! Hoss is leading scorer on four goals ffs. Even if he is replaced by Slimani, I cannot see Perez, Richie Atsu becoming Premiere league hot shots!

Hopefully Slimani may grab a grew goals so we survive by the narrowest of margins!

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Slimani is the best player we could have acquired in this window.

          • HarryHype59

Maybe, but I fear he has arrived too late and injured to boot.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

The good players do not arrive on Jan 1st and January is only 31 days old. Leicester started the month by telling NUFC they were not lending and he’s £25m, I very much doubt Slimani woul have come at all, nevermind at the start of the month if we tried to buy him.

    • Dillon Tovak

Every team has as many points as their play deserves.

      • Jonas

Myth. If a team can win a game they don’t deserve to, then the table can lie.

        • thewildchimp

If a team deserves to win – they will win. If they don’t deserve to win – they will lose or draw. The team who puts in a better performance doesn’t necessarily deserve to win.

  • Rich Lawson

Surely we’ve established on here before Stavely isn’t the buyer, doesn’t have the personal wealth to even buy the club let alone make the improvements required ? She is a front person who takes instruction from who knows where ? As usual it’s anybodies guess where this goes ?

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Most of the thinking fans understand where we’re at. Stavely’s bit built in risk of relegation, Ashley wanted a price based on a Premier league club. Nothing will happen now until the end of the season or we hit 40 pts.

The simple fact is, Ashley wants out but he’ll not give the club away. Stavely wants in but she’s representing investors and wants the best price. What we need to happen is for us to win a few games and get to safety ASAP. Only then will anything happen.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

there`s the biggest problem “winning a few games”

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

The problem is apparently down to the other team wanting to do something similar.

It’s an unfortunate truism, all we can do is hope the team win a few games.

Maybe you can go along and lend your support for a change.

    • HarryHype59

I said months ago , Stavely won’t risk her client’s money whilst there was a 65% chance of this club going down again ! Nice to see you have finally eventually grasped this!

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Finally? You cheeky git, I have said this for years.

I think there was a big chance of it going through because she thought she was getting it on the cheap with the price including a risk that in the autumn, she thought unlikely to happen. This may show her naivety because from the away game at Burnley most knew we had a difficult run and not getting something from that game, Bournemouth at home meant we had some tricky games.

I put our relegation risk at 30%.

  • orang gilax9

am very tired and disgusted with all the cunning Mike Ass.hley. Disgusted and very disgusted if Newcastle are still owned by Mike Ass.hley, and if that happens .. I invite all fans to boycott by not buying tickets to St.James Park until Mike Ass.hley sells Newcastle.

    • Mitros gotta start

      Sounds like you are disgusted……boycoutt!

  • mactoon

I think this reporters opinion just about sums the situation up apart from the club being self-sufficient. He disregards the interest free loan athough I would imagine Ashley’s valuation will go up once he receives this seasons TV money and details of the next 3 year deal.
