Alan Shearer couldn’t be at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.

Ironically he had to watch the whole win over Manchester United, sitting (as well as leaping to his feet no doubt at times!) in…Manchester.

The Newcastle legend was working, one of the pundits on Match of The Day 2 last night.

Watching/listening, it was obvious how much he wished he could have been there, declaring ‘It looked a fantastic atmosphere’. It was.

After the match Rafa Benitez said ‘Today we were a bit lucky in some of the shots they had…’ but Alan Shearer disagrees on the luck aspect.

Yes Manchester United had their chances, just as Newcastle did, but there was some great defending and players throwing themselves in the way of shots. At no time though was it backs to the wall for anybody length of time.

As Alan Shearer says about the win: ‘I thought it was well deserved’.

Pointing out that Newcastle won the midfield battle and the defence came out on top against the likes of Lukaku, the former number nine sums it up as: ‘Everyone gave absolutely everything for that black and white shirt’.

None of us can ask for any more than that.

Alan Shearer talking on Match of The Day 2:

“I thoroughly enjoyed that.

“It isn’t very often I disagree with Rafa…but I didn’t think Newcastle were lucky at all.

“I thought it was well deserved.

“They dominated the midfield.

“Lascelles and Lejeune at the back were absolutely magnificent.

“And the goalkeeper, what an incredible debut for him.

“Everyone gave absolutely everything for that black and white shirt.

“It looked a fantastic atmosphere.”

He’s right we were not lucky, it was well deserved. Rafa however was also right, we were lucky too, you have to be to win a game like that.

So in essence they both have a point.

    • Arty Hume

To be positive…if VAR had been used it could have been 2-0, now that would have been so sweet.

  • kingfisher

Aye Nut,when you look at the stats,(Toon 0 corners – Manure 10) of course we rode our luck, but over the course of the season, these things are supposed to even themselves out! Obviously Manure are a much better side than us ( the table does’nt lie) , but the football Gods were on our side yesterday, thank God 😁

  • Peaky Magpie

Monday morning after beating Man Utd is second only to Monday morning after beating The Mackems…..🤣🤣

    • Rich Lawson

Can you believe they turned 3-0 round with 2 own goals ? Hopefully that’s all their luck for the season used up in 1 game ?

      • Peaky Magpie

Hope so,one things for sure we won’t see the plane/banners for a long long long time….😂😂

  • MP01

to be fair, up until the last 25 mins, we had more shots than United (admittedly equal shots on target). It was inevitable that they would have plenty more in the last 20 mins which tipped the balance!!! I can see what Alan was saying as Newcastle were arguably the better team for the majority of the game but there definitely was an element of luck, Sanchez open net, Martial’s two shots straight at Dubravka, etc.

One thing that did royally p*** me off was Smalling’s dive. What need is there for a a center back to dive? Im just glad it ultimately cost them as that free kick led to the goal!

    • Steve Smith

      Uh oh.

    • Peaky Magpie

That dive was shocking mate but it turned round and bit him right on the ar*e….

    • Jc

      United? Come on ffs.

      • MP01

this was pre-coffee… cut me some slack! lol.

    • Jimmy_toons

Are you a United supporter or are you Man U?

  • Arty Hume

Fantastic performance for everyone, all hero’s. Nice touch from the not so special one to heap some praise our way. Just hope this win does not galvanise the fat one to linger on as owner. That would be a travesty as we deserve so much more. That win has taken a load of pressure of the club, players, manager and the fans, something to savour. Well done the lads.

    • Alex

I hope you’re wrong! This has not taken away any pressure at all – they need to keep their foot on the pedal and can’t afford to relax whatsoever.

Yesterday, we went from 18th to 13th. It’s just as feasible that, on the last day of the season, we could go from 13th to 18th!

Hope it improves confidence but a win against Man Ure is both if we lose against Southampton.

  • robbersdog

Alan’s quite right; we weren’t lucky, we were just better than Man Utd on the day. And let’s not forget, Gayle was denied a definite penalty as well.

It was a great performance and a thoroughly deserved win.

    • Paul Smith

You can say we were lucky that they wasted some chances that they should have scored without saying we were lucky to win. Most matches turn on such things. You could look at half our games this season and with a bit of luck with shots that hit posts and things we’d be comfortably in the top half of the table right now.

  • Leazes.

Manchester didn’t turn up, really you have to put things into context, we aren’t in their league. It shows that in 90 minutes a poorer team can catch better opposition on an off day…. It happened with us against Hereford.

That’s what makes football so fascinating…. and unpredictable over 90 mins….but not over a season.

    • Chaim Mankoff

May I remind you about Leicester winning the league?

  • Mxpx

I actually think that the ref may have done us a favour by not giving us the penalty if wed gone defensive at half time we’d have bottled it
