Newcastle 3 Luton 1 – Saturday 6 January 2018 3pm

Newcastle were well on top in the first half and once the opening goal went in for Ayoze Perez after a horrific mistake by the visiting keeper, the result didn’t appear in doubt.

Perez quickly added a second before Shevey made it three in nine minutes when finishing off a very good team goal.

It looked as though Newcastle would go on and score five or six but as often happens it didn’t work out that way.

United relaxed/sat back, either consciously or subconsciously, and the second half was far harder than necessary.

The visitors pulled a goal back four minutes after the break due to sloppy play from Newcastle, then went on to hit the bar and have a goal disallowed.

Newcastle could and should have scored more but still did enough to be deserved winners.

Rafa put out more or less a first choice team and no surprise that equals a rare progression to the fourth round.
